Demi Lovato Explains How 'Give Your Heart a Break' Influenced 'Demi': Video

Singer calls breakout hit "good old American pop music."

While Demi Lovato continues to promote her fourth studio album, "Demi," with the hit lead single "Heart Attack," the pop star recently sat down with Walmart Soundcheck to discuss the enduring impact of her 2011 breakout single, "Give Your Heart a Break," and how it influenced her latest full-length.

"I think what resonated with pop fans was the lyrics are super catchy, and the beat, and everything," says Lovato. "It's good old American pop music, and that's what I have on this album."

"Give Your Heart a Break," which was featured on Lovato's 2011 album "Unbroken," is still her best-selling single with 1.9 million downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "Heart Attack," meanwhile, has peaked at No. 10 on the Hot 100 chart, while "Demi" debuted on last week's Billboard 200 chart with 110,000 copies sold, her best sales week to date.

Demi Lovato Performs With Broken Leg in a Blinged Out Cast

Lovatics were out in full force Thursday for Demi Lovato’s performance at The Grove in Los Angeles.

The “X Factor” judge performed for the opening of Topshop and Topman at the busy mall, and her fans weren’t going to stop at anything to get a glimpse of the singer.

omg! talked to some of her faithful following in the crowd who said they started lining up at 6 a.m. just to be able to get a glimpse of the singer. Lovato announced on Twitter she would be giving a free concert, so naturally the shopping mall was packed with tweens.

Lovato arrived around 4 p.m. and was driven practically right up on the stage. Don’t call it diva behavior, though, because the singer is dealing with a broken leg. She got out, signed a few autographs and hobbled up to perform her hit “Give Your Heart a Break.”

“I’m feeling great and ready to rock,” Lovato told the packed crowd. “I have a new single coming out and there is nothing from stopping me from coming out.”

Lovato hinted her new single “Heart Attack” — set to drop March 4 — is “a lot of rock and pop.”

Sporting a Top Shop jacket and blinged out cast, the singer lit up on stage. She only performed one song although fans chanted for an encore before going inside the store.

Her “X Factor” buddies Fifth Harmony were some of the guests in the VIP area watching their other mentor perform. (Sorry Simon Cowell!). Fans went crazy when they saw the girls, who kindly took pictures with anyone who asked.

Topshop and Topman is now open to the public at The Grove, so if you have fashion envy, go scoop up Lovato’s studded jacket!

Demi Lovato Feels 'Blessed' For Chart-Topping Triumph

Demi Lovato is really having a moment.

Not only did she take home a Moonman at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Video with a Message (for "Skyscraper"), but she also put on one very memorable performance of her chart-topping single, "Give Your Heart a Break." That song has given the singer a lot of firsts. It was the first time she's ever performed at the VMAs and it's the first time she's ever had a song sit at the top of the charts — it's now at #1 on Billboard's Pop Songs chart.

"The reception for my single is so amazing," she told MTV News. "It's been going up the charts for a while now and right now I actually have my first #1 single, so that's really exciting for me. It means so much to me. I never thought I'd be blessed enough to have this opportunity and here I am.

"It's just so incredible," she added.

And if anyone is looking for an answer as to why this song has been so embraced by the masses, Billy Steinberg, who co-wrote the song with Josh Alexander, recently offered up an explanation to MTV News.

"You know, I just think it took a long time for numerous reasons. I think one, it's not a trendy dance track. It's kind of almost an old-school song with a verse and a chorus and a bridge. It's kind of an old-fashioned song. ... But she does have a devoted following and the fanbase she does have really pushed the song and Hollywood Records did a great job to promote the song. And the fact that it was a great song that was really sung well, it just built up steam. It took time, but it happened."

With a hit single under her belt, fans will next get the chance to see her debut as one of the new judges on the "X Factor." The revamped second season kicks off on September 12 on Fox. She'll sit beside fellow newbie and hitmaker Britney Spears, as well as returning judges Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid.

Chart Moves: Demi Lovato Leaps To No. 1 On Mainstream Top 40 Chart

As previously reported, Flo Rida's "Whistle" returns to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week at No. 1, pushing Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" down to No. 2 after two weeks in charge. What other moves shake up the Hot 100 and other song charts?

-- Demi Lovato: Just in time for her debut at the judges' table on Fox's "The X Factor" (Sept. 12), Demi Lovato notches her first Mainstream Top 40 No. 1 with "Give Your Heart a Break" (3-1). At 25 weeks, the song completes the longest ascent to No. 1 by a woman in the chart's nearly 20-year history and ties for the longest climb to the top among all artists with Cee Lo Green's "F**k You! (Forget You)" (2010-11). On the Hot 100, "Heart" rises 17-16, reaching a new peak in its 22nd week.

Like Lovato, "Heart" co-writers Billy Steinberg and Josh Alexander each make their first visits to the Mainstream Top 40 summit. However, previous to the launch of the Mainstream Top 40 chart in 1992, Steinberg topped the Billboard Hot 100 with five titles: Madonna's "Like a Virgin" (1984); Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" (1986); Heart's "Alone" (1987); Whitney Houston's "So Emotional" (1988); and the Bangles' "Eternal Flame" (1989).

"Heart" marks Hollywood Records' third Mainstream Top 40 No. 1, following Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." (2009) and Jesse McCartney's "Leavin' " (2008).

-- Usher: As his former No. 10 Hot 100 hit "Scream" slips 30-33, it rises 2-1 on Hot Dance Club Songs. The song marks Usher's first topper on the latter tally as a lead artist. His sole previous trip to the top occurred as a guest (with Lil Wayne) on Enrique Iglesias' "Dirty Dancer" last year.

-- Matchbox Twenty: Ahead of the expected debut of North high atop next week's Billboard 200, "She's So Mean," the set's lead single charges 53-40 with Greatest Gainer/Digital honors on the Hot 100. The song pushes 32-28 on Hot Digital Songs (55,000 downloads sold, up 32%, according to Nielsen SoundScan).

-- OneRepublic: "Feel Again," the first taste of the band's forthcoming third album, arrives as the Hot 100's Hot Shot Debut at No. 61. It launches at No. 22 on Hot Digital Songs (61,000) and No. 24 -- a career-best bow -- on Adult Top 40.

-- Alicia Keys: The pianist extraordinaire earns the top new entry on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (No. 67), as "Girl on Fire" garnered 2.1 million audience impressions in less than a day, according to Nielsen BDS. The song is the first single from her forthcoming album of the same name, due Nov. 27. "Girl" was released in three versions: its original mix, an "Inferno" remix featuring Nicki Minaj and a stripped-down "Blue Light" version.

Demi Lovato's VMA Performance Track 'Give Your Heart A Break': The Inside Story

Demi Lovato is set to take the stage during the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards pre-show on Thursday, September 6, and the big-voiced "X Factor" judge will be performing her chart-topping Unbroken single "Give Your Heart a Break."

The tune and the VMA-nominated video — she's up for Best Video With A Message — follow Lovato as she convinces her crush he shouldn't be scared to fall for her. If you ask us, it shouldn't take that much convincing. Before she performs on Thursday, MTV News got the inside scoop on the song from one of its songwriters, Billy Steinberg.

Steinberg, along with Josh Alexander, met up with Lovato after they had already written the track, without any particular singer attached to it. Once a record exec at Hollywood Records heard their demo, he knew Lovato was the perfect singer for it. "She sang it really well and that's how it came about," Steinberg said of the recording session for the track. "We were thrilled that she sang it really well. Sometimes it's a roll of the dice, you know?

"My partner Josh Alexander ... knew her voice a little better than I did, and he felt that she'd do a good job on it," he further explained. "I didn't know as much about her." Once they did meet up, what the trio created was pop gold. "You know, there's nothing better for a songwriter than writing a good song and having the right singer sing it," he said.

"I'll give you another example from my career where I really felt that I got very lucky: when Cyndi Lauper recorded 'True Colors.' And, you know, 'True Colors' was a ballad and a lot of different people could have sung it, but Cyndi gave it something special, and I'd say the same is true of 'Give Your Heart a Break,' " Steinberg explained. "Whether it was luck or divine guidance or whatever you want to call it, I think the song got in the right hands."

The song is having a moment long after it was originally released. Not only will Lovato belt it out on the VMA pre-show stage Thursday, but it is currently #1 on the Pop Songs chart on Billboard. It's been a long haul to get to this point for the song after it was released to radio last December. And Steinberg might know why it took long for pop-music lovers to fall for the track.

"You know, I just think it took a long time for numerous reasons. I think one, it's not a trendy dance track. It's kind of almost an old-school song with a verse and a chorus and a bridge. It's kind of an old-fashioned song. ... [And] Demi's not like Rihanna or somebody who radio programmers see she has a new single and they all add it instantaneously.

"But she does have a devoted following and the fanbase she does have really pushed the song and Hollywood Records did a great job to promote the song. And the fact that it was a great song that was really sung well, it just built up steam. It took time, but it happened."

With only a little bit of time before she performs the song on the VMA pre-show stage, Steinberg was asked whether he has any advice for the singer. "I don't really have any advice for her. I think she's a very capable singer and a very capable performer and sing it from her heart, she does that," he said. "I think [her voice] has two qualities. It's a strong voice and an emotional voice. I think one of the nice things about her voice is it's both ... and that's a wonderful quality."

How Demi Lovato's 'Give Your Heart a Break' Became Her Biggest Radio Hit

Almost four years to the day after Demi Lovato first debuted on Billboard's charts, the Hollywood Records star is celebrating her biggest airplay hit ever

"Give Your Heart a Break" -- the second charting single from her 2011 album, "Unbroken" -- became her first top 10 on the Pop Songs airplay chart last week, rising 12-9 in its 19th frame. This week, the track holds its position. And over on the all-format Radio Songs list, it's her first single to chart, jumping three spots from 15-12 since last week.

Lovato arrived on Billboard's tallies in July 2008 with the single "This Is Me," a duet with Joe Jonas from their Disney Channel made-for-TV movie "Camp Rock." Though she released her debut album "Don't Forget" in 2008 and followed it up with "Here We Go Again" in 2009, neither recording generated a breakout radio hit. (She has, however, notched 15 hits, including two top 10s, on the Billboard Hot 100, primarily due to sales on the radio/sales/streaming hybrid chart.) In addition to "Camp Rock" and its 2010 sequel, Lovato starred in the Disney comedy series "Sonny With a Chance" from February 2009 through January 2011.

"That Disney Channel image can make it difficult for artists to connect with adults," says Tommy Chuck, PD for WFLZ Tampa Bay, Fla., the first top 40 station to play the single back in December 2011. "I really don't think she's had the right song until now."

Lovato is the latest in a long line of Disney stars to cross over from TV stardom to major radio success, following such acts as Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez. The latter scored her first Pop Songs top 10 hit this year with "Love You Like a Love Song," the second single from her third album, "When the Sun Goes Down."

As for "Give Your Heart a Break," the punchy tune came to Lovato thanks to a meeting between Billy Steinberg and Hollywood senior VP of A&R Jon Lind, two veteran songwriters with multiple Hot 100-topping singles of their own. Separately, the two friends have co-written No. 1 hits for Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Vanessa Williams, Whitney Houston and Heart.

Steinberg and his writing partner Josh Alexander met with Lind in September 2010 and played him some songs, including "Give Your Heart a Break." Lind says he knew the song "had the arc and the intensity" in its melody and lyrics that Lovato would love.

Though not written specifically for her, Lovato did indeed embrace the track and wanted it for "Unbroken." While many cuts were considered for the album, Lind says there were only two songs from the early recordings that ended up making the grade: "Give Your Heart a Break" and "Skyscraper." The latter became "Unbroken's" first single, peaking at No. 33 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart and No. 10 on the Hot 100, mostly due to strong initial download sales.

JoJo's Comeback: Why Her R&B Makeover Is Worth Watching

Robbie Snow, head of global marketing for Hollywood, says promotion for "Give Your Heart a Break" started in earnest this January, just weeks after the song's early lyric video premiered Dec. 23. A full video bowed on March 23. Combined, the two clips have earned 44 million views on Lovato's official YouTube channel.

Snow credits a number of activities for Lovato in 2012 that helped raise the single's exposure. In addition to major TV performances on CBS' "People's Choice Awards" (Jan. 11), Fox's "American Idol" (March 15) and ABC's "Good Morning America" (July 6), she co-hosted Fox's "Teen Choice Awards" (July 21) and embarked on a well-received tour.

Lovato's stardom -- and chart success -- may only grow in the coming months: She'll debut as a judge on Fox's "The X Factor" Sept. 12.

Watch the full Demi Lovato 'Give Your Heart a Break' special that aired on E!

Demi talked about the song writing process and how personal her songs are to her.

She explained, "Sometimes when I sing my songs, I actually get so into them, I cry onstage."

Lovato explained the meaning of 'Give Your Heart a Break' about "not wanting to break the other person's heart" and "just that you're there to love them."

She said the song isn't about anyone in particular - Demi said she recorded it a couple of years ago when she wasn't in a relationship.

She further explained, "It's a love song, but it's also about having faith in the relationship."

Demi said of her past struggles, "I've been through a lot at a young age and I don't think it's coincidence," adding that she's "an influence on younger girls" and tires to "just be a role model for them."

She talked about sharing her story with girls to help them with the same issues she dealt with and notes, "I'm really blessed and thankful for my fans."

How is Demi doing these days?

"Today, I'm doing really good," she said, but, "it hasn't been the easiest journey."

Demi added, "I'm human I'm gonna have bad days... it's not a perfect life."

She talked about what she's been through and times when she acted "diva-ish" in the past, but after treatment, she realized she might not have the same career.

It really put life in perspective: "Live it to the fullest and do as much as you can for people while you have a voice," she said.

Demi also talked about bullying, saying that a lot of her issues came from being bullied when she was 12 years old.

Demi shared a bit about taking photos for the collage at the end of the 'Give Your Heart a Break' video, which is so cool!

In ten years, Demi said she wants to be married with lots of kids!

Demi Lovato Declares Her Love In 'Heart A Break' Video

Demi Lovato may be nursing a broken heart in her "Give Your Heart a Break" video, but that doesn't mean she's going to let her boy get away that easily.

In the clip released Monday (April 2), Demi and her video boyfriend may have hit a relationship stumbling block, but the singer has found the way to let him know she loves him.

"The new music video, I'm basically trying to convince a guy that I didn't break his heart, and we get into a fight and I try to win him over again," Demi told MTV News recently. "I do something special for him at the end of the song."

The video opens with the couple talking on the phone, and it's clearly about something serious. When Demi starts looking at photos of the twosome in happier times, viewers accompany her on a trip down memory lane with shots of the two cuddling, painting together, sharing flirty glances, dancing and strolling in the sun.

When Demi isn't reminiscing, she's strolling down the street, her bag of photographic evidence that they are perfect for one another hanging on her shoulder. So, what will she do with those photos?

Like a scene out of a good romantic comedy, she makes a collage on the brick wall opposite his apartment window, an endless number of photos that combine to create a portrait of them smiling. Demi, knowing it will work, struts away from the scene of her declaration of love, with an all-knowing smirk on her face.

"Heart a Break" is the second single off what Lovato calls her "upbeat and uplifting" Unbroken album. "I didn't want to come out with this depressing album. I think it's important that I kept a lot of my heart open on the album because I talked about my personal issues," she told MTV News of the 2011 release. "But I also had some fun dance songs on there for people to enjoy."

Demi Lovato's 'Give Your Heart a Break' Music Video Leaks

Demi Lovato's music video for her second single "Give Your Heart a Break" arrives early. Scheduled to come out on April 2, the clip hits the web one day prior to the original release date. It follows the former Disney darling as she remembers her boyfriend during their happier time together.

"I'm basically trying to convince a guy that I didn't break his heart, and we get into a fight and I try to win him over again," Lovato explained to MTV News about the love story in the newly-revealed music video. "So I do something special for him at the end of the song."

Although having been acting in front of camera many times before, the "Camp Rock" star still found it hard and awkward to act lovey dovey with her on-screen lover especially when they had to do it "five minutes after meeting."

She recalled in an interview with E! News, "I really think the most challenging part of shooting my music video was that I was actually on set for the first time and the director said, 'OK, you and this guy, you're going to cuddle now'."

Regardless, she enjoyed choosing the model who would play her boyfriend. "I always love doing music videos, because they send me, like, 20 guys, and they're like, 'Pick the cutest one that you want to be your boyfriend' - and I was like, 'This is so awesome'," she shared.

Another sneak peek at Demi Lovato's upcoming music video for her second single "Give Your Heart a Break" is released. While the previous one sees her smiling coyly to a shirtless hunk from behind a curtain, this new one features her gazing lovingly and sharing a hug with him.

" 'Give Your Heart a Break' isn't a song about having a broken heart. It's actually funny sometimes when people think that, because it has nothing to do with that," she said. "This is a song about faith, it's a song about fighting for the one you love. It's about living in the moment, and mostly it's about believing you're worth falling for."

The single is lifted from Lovato's third studio album "Unbroken". Its music video was directed by Justin Francis and will be unleashed in full on April 2 in North America before having its worldwide premiere the next day.

Demi Lovato fans won't have to wait too much longer to see the singer's video for her latest single, "Give Your Heart a Break."

The video for Lovato's second Unbroken single will premiere April 2 on E! News. In several teased shots from the clip, a bare-faced Demi looks out from behind a curtain and flirts with her love interest. In another shot, said shirtless love interest returns her tender glances, also from behind a curtain.

The video certainly seems like it's going to be sexy, and Lovato commented on having to get romantic with someone she barely knows on set. "It's kind of funny. It's part of the job though. You just try to get through it, but it is kind of awkward at first when you have to act like a couple with someone that you don't know," she said. "He was really sweet, really sweet and really cute."

Recently, Demi opened up a bit more about the track in a video she posted on Twitter. "19-years-old ... sometimes it feels like during that brief time that I've been alive that I've lived through more emotions than people twice my age," she said. "I think that's the reason I sing about love so often in the music I make."

She explained that despite the play on the word "heartbreak" in the title, the song is about the exact opposite. "Last year I began working on a song about a different kind of love," she said. "It's a song about showing someone you love that you're the one right in front of them. This is a song about faith."
