Miley Cyrus co-star Douglas Booth talks about 'awkward' sex scenes in LOL

Miley Cyrus, the star of the Disney children’s television show Hannah Montana, has spoken of how easy she found her first love scene, with the actor Douglas Booth, in the forthcoming film LOL.

Booth who caused hearts to flutter when he starred in the BBC adaptation of Great Expectations, was left with a different impression. “We actually filmed the sex scenes on the first day, so it was incredibly awkward,” he admits to Mandrake at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition Preview Party.

Booth, 19, resisted the temptation to get in the mood by listening to the pop records that Cyrus, 19, has recorded. “It’s not the kind of music I would listen to, but I know that it is very popular,” he says.

The actor adds that he holds a great deal of affection for the singer, even if they have little in common. "Miley is great, she's in a completely different stratosphere from me, and moves in completely different circles."

Blimey Miley! Clean-cut Disney star does the dirty in sex scene

She first found fame as a Disney starlet with a famous dad but now Miley Cyrus has truly come of age - by filming her debut movie romp.

In rom-com LOL the 19 year old pop-star turned actress has a steamy sex scene with her hunky Brit co-star Douglas Booth.

When asked how she prepared for the raunchy role Miley said: 'Breath mints, stomach crunches, spray tan. Plus workouts to make my boobs look bigger, perk them up.'

Miley, who many will know best as Billy Ray Cyrus's daughter, confessed that her initial nerves filming the steamy scenes soon vanished.

The confident tween star confessed that things 'could be worse' than kissing 19 year old former Burberry model Booth.

Miley is equally comfortable talking about her sex life in real life as she is discussing it in her work.

She admitted that her own 'first time' made her think differently about things saying:

'I think it does change you as a person a little bit because you start thinking maybe that's what guys want from you.'

Miley Cyrus' 'LOL': What Went Wrong?

Last Friday, Miley Cyrus' soapy teen dramedy "LOL" opened to a limited release in nine states. The film, by all accounts, didn't perform the way a film starring Cyrus, "Twilight" star Ashley Greene and one-time screen siren Demi Moore, might be expected to.

"LOL," an English-language adaptation of a French Film of the same name, grossed only $46,500 in 105 theaters. While it's hard to tell why the film underperformed, it seems that a lack of marketing leading up to its debut may have played a role in that. The flick follows the story of a teen, Lola (played by Cyrus), as she faces the strife of first love in a world driven by technology.

"It's really hard to say because we've heard absolutely nothing about it. I think there was some buzz about this was sort of going to be a different type of breakout role for Miley. I'm not a fan of Miley, but I would actually like to see that and I think a lot of people would," Brooke Tarnoff, a senior editor at Next Movie, told MTV News about the lackluster interest in the flick once it dropped.

With so few eyes on the release leading up to May 4, it's hard to tell if the performance had anything to do with Cyrus. Tarnoff added, "Maybe the selling power of Miley has diminished. I think her fanbase may be less loyal than it was in the 'Hannah Montana' days, but it's all kind of moot."

The film had gotten some attention when Cyrus and Greene were spotted filming it back in 2010. But, after shooting wrapped, little else was heard about the film until a trailer dropped in mid-April, three weeks before the limited release.

"There's obviously an audience for pretty much anything," she continued. "And this one having a 'Twilight' star and Miley Cyrus, who still has some cache, it's just [a missed opportunity]."

Regardless of the film's box-office performance, Cyrus seemed proud of it. She took to Twitter over the weekend and brushed off the low numbers. "Thank u so much for everyone who went to see LOL," she wrote. "It is a film I loved making and I am proud of.... That's really all that matters to me."

Lisa Azuelos, who wrote and directed both versions, talked about the box-office response in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

"I really thought this movie could be universal," she said. "Usually teen movies are tender or scary or have vampires in them, but they're never realistic. This story isn't too dirty and not too stupid."

Miley Cyrus' LOL Bombs at the Box Office—Is Her Personal Life to Blame?

Between her daily Pilates class, constant walks with her three adorable pups and belly-baring Disneyland trips, it seems that Miley Cyrus is the hottest tabloid teen.

But despite the fact M.C. can't keep those pesky paps away, her professional life has seen better days—her flick LOL tanked at the box office, earning just $46,500 in its opening weekend.

So, is the former Hannah Montana star's highly scrutinized personal life to blame for her latest professional slump?

Possibly. Because Miles can't seem to redirect the tabloid focus toward her career, instead of her latest crop top ensemble. True, the movie received minimal promotion and it was released in only 105 theaters, but Miley's star power just isn't the same.

There's no denying Miley's looking abtastically fab as of late, but her barely there workout wear is only drawing more attention to her bod and fueling those pesky anorexia rumors Miley's still slamming down:

"If I lose weight, I'm anorexic. If I gain weight, I'm fat. People often forget how hard it is when everybody judges you. There are a lot of people who can't get along with this and break down because of that," Miley shared in a German interview while promoting LOL.

And we agree! The tabloids have been über harsh on the young star—calling her fat, anorexic and accusing Miley of self-harm—it can't be easy to see those awful headlines and according to Miley, very false accusations.

But we're still not entirely convinced Miley's on a solid path to success. Trust, we're all about the gal's gluten-free lifestyle and commitment to health but donning a little black dress when you're supposed to be sweating at the gym sends a less-than-subtle message that you're fully prepped for paparazzi pics.

Still, we say cut the gal some slack; she's only 19 years old and has a lot to learn in terms of the Hollywood game. And the constant criticism finally seems like it's getting to the gal who has such a promising future ahead:

"The money you gain is a type of compensation for all the hate on the internet and for the paparazzi. You can buy yourself a big house but you're not able to leave it because as soon as you are out on the streets, it's like you're under fire."

What's more, Miley's calling her LOL costar Demi Moore "her mentor"—a bit troubling considering Demi's fresh out of rehab and dealing with her own personal demons:

"She's [Demi Moore] unbelievable great and she's my mentor. She has been doing this job for years now and nothing's gonna knock her down."

Hey Miles, we adore you and we want to see your talent (and those fab abs) in H.Wood for years to come, so we say take breather from Tinsel Town before something knocks you down.

Think of it as your post-Disney comeback—we know you have what it takes to be a big-screen success.

Miley Cyrus, ‘LOL’ Cast Got Shafted by Lionsgate

Miley Cyrus got the shaft. So did Demi Moore, Ashley Greene Golden Globe nominated actor Thomas Jane and Hollywood legend Marlo Thomas. Lions Gate Entertainment Corp left them all twisting in the wind.

The film studio pulled the rug out from under their movie, “LOL: Laughing Out Loud,” to focus on block busters.

While the actors, crew and director Lisa Azuelos-Alessandrin, were all hurt by the studio, Miley is bearing the brunt of this fiasco because the picture was a starring vehicle for her.

It’s a shame because LOL may not be an Academy Award contender, but it’s certainly on par with any of the rom-coms Jennifer Aniston has cranked out. The French version, also directed by Azuelos, was a smash hit.

But it never got the support required to launch a successful movie. Lionsgate did virtually no marketing. Not surprising since it was struggling itself, and on the verge of a hostile takeover by corporate raider Carl Ichan.

It acquired the U.S. distribution rights from Mandate Pictures in Oct. 2010, while it was under Ichan’s assault. Mandate was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lionsgate, operating as an independent brand. LOL marked the first collaboration between the two, according to Variety.

Ichan dropped his bid in late 2010 and last January, Lions Gate acquired Summit Entertainment , home of the “Twilight” franchise, in sort of a reverse merger. Since then, it’s shifted its focus to big blockbuster films.

Its signal success since the merger has been “The Hunger Games,” the first of four movies based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novels.

Against the riptide from that film, LOL was swept out to sea. The film was released in just 105 theaters last weekend, and went up against the biggest film of the year, “The Avengers.” Needless to say, it never had a chance. It gross just $46,500 over the weekend.

Which is not surprising since marketing for “LOL” was dumped on the studio’s home entertainment division. Without the muscle of its theatrical marketing arm, it was doomed from the start.

In fact, the film would have gone straight to DVD, if not for a contract provision requiring a US release to support the film’s overseas distribution, according to deadline.com.

That poor theatrical showing led critics like Variety’s Joe Leydon to pronounce Miley’s career all but over.

“That Lionsgate gave this star vehicle such a half-hearted theatrical dump May 4, speaks volumes about the dimmed wattage of toplined Miley Cyrus, whose charisma-free performance may, in turn, serve as a cautionary example for teen pop phenoms seeking to break out into ‘mature’ screen roles,” he wrote.

And what would that example be? Watch who you do business with?

Say what you will about Miley’s off-screen antics, she’s a proven winner as an actress. She’s also not the first actor to get stabbed in the back by a studio.

The LOL fiasco says nothing about her acting ability or star power. Hopefully it won’t dim her prospects down the road.

Muzzled film 'LOL' gets a release date

The made-in-Michigan "LOL" was supposed to represent a big step forward for Miley Cyrus' movie career as she attempts to mature beyond her saccharine image as Disney's Hannah Montana. Instead, it has turned into a tough lesson about how quickly a Hollywood studio can fall out of love with a movie.

An English-language adaptation of the hit 2008 French film of the same name, "LOL" is about teen romance in the age of texting and social media. The picture's sophisticated tone is set in an early scene that finds Cyrus taking a shower while her mother, played by Demi Moore, takes a bath in the same room. The two have a frank talk about sexuality after Moore's character notices that her naked daughter has had a Brazilian wax.

"I really thought this movie could be universal," said filmmaker Lisa Azuelos, who wrote and directed the American and French versions of the films. "Usually teen movies are tender or scary or have vampires in them, but they're never realistic. This story isn't too dirty and not too stupid," she said in a telephone interview from Morocco.

The Cyrus movie was made in 2010 and produced by Mandate Pictures for about $11 million, with money raised primarily from sales to foreign distributors. Most of the shooting was done at various southeast Michigan locations, including Detroit, Dearborn and Grosse Pointe Farms.

Lionsgate, Mandate's parent company, acquired domestic distribution rights for several million dollars, but executives at the studio soon lost their enthusiasm for "LOL," according to people with knowledge of the situation who were not authorized to speak about it publicly. With Lionsgate focused on several higher-profile projects, including last year's flops "Abduction" and "Conan the Barbarian" and March's mega-hit "The Hunger Games," "LOL" never got a spot on the release calendar.

Lionsgate executives were not confident that they could successfully sell the film, which centers on Cyrus' character but also features interwoven tales involving other teens. It lacks the obvious marketing hook of high-profile films like "Hunger Games" and the upcoming adaptation of best-selling pregnancy book "What to Expect When You're Expecting."

Insiders say "LOL" likely would have gone direct to DVD if it weren't for Mandate's foreign-distribution contracts, which contain a provision saying the movie must be shown domestically in at least 100 theaters. As a result, the studio quietly decided to release "LOL" in seven cities today, the same day as sure-to-be blockbuster "The Avengers," which is expected to earn more than $100 million on its opening. (No "LOL" screenings are scheduled in metro Detroit.) Lionsgate set the date without making any formal announcement and apparently planned no publicity.

In a sign of how low a priority "LOL" is at Lionsgate, the marketing is being handled by the studio's home entertainment division -- not the theatrical marketing team, which typically oversees any release going to theaters.

Despite the lack of attention Lionsgate is giving the movie, the team behind "LOL" reserved hope that it will overcome the odds.

"Your country is so big, so I'm very flattered the movie is being released," said director Azuelos, who is making her U.S. debut with "LOL." "I wish it would be a national release. And I'm still hopeful that in those seven cities it's going to be big and grow and grow."

Miley Cyrus Movie News: LOL to Get Limited Release

Not many movie goers will have a chance to laugh out loud at Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore in their upcoming film.

According to The Los Angeles Times, LOL - a drama that stars Cyrus as a coming-of-age teenager and Moore as her mother - will hit theaters on May 4, but only in a few cities.

Lionsgate sources say the studio simply lost enthusiasm (and possibly marketing funds) for the flick after focusing on earlier releases such as Abduction, Conan the Barbarian and The Hunger Games.

LOL, an adaption of a French film directed by Lisa Azuelos, who is also behind the camera for the U.S. version, will open in just seven cities across the country.

But there's hope for Miley's movie career yet: she will star this summer in So Undercover, going undercover inside a sorority and appearing alongside Joshua Bowman and Jeremy Piven.

Miley Cyrus Crying Out For Attention After Career Setback

Since the couple met on the set of the 2010 movie "The Last Song," Liam Hemsworth has been better known as Miley Cyrus' boyfriend than for his work as an actor -- but times have changed.

Cyrus, with her hit Disney show, chart-topping albums and moderately successful film career, was the obvious power player in the relationship, but Hemsworth's role in "The Hunger Games" might soon make Cyrus better known as Liam Hemsworth's girlfriend.

Miley's big attempt to break out of the family-friendly Disney mold by playing a rebellious teenager in "LOL" has been somewhat thwarted, in large part by the film that is helping her boyfriend become a household name.

According to the Los Angeles Times, "LOL" was made in 2010 and Lionsgate acquired the domestic distribution rights, but the film never got a spot on the release calendar because the company was too focused on bigger projects -- specifically "The Hunger Games."

Now that "Hunger Games" has taken in $336,666,363 at the box office, "LOL" is finally getting a release -- albeit a limited one. With almost no promotion from the studio, Cyrus' film will open in just seven cities on May 4, narrowly avoiding a straight-to-DVD fate, only because of a contract with foreign distributors that mandated the film be shown domestically in at least 100 theaters.

With no marketing from Lionsgate, Cyrus seems embarrassed to promote the film herself. A studio spokeswoman told the LA Times that the actress was not available to discuss the film due to her schedule, and clearly, Miley must be too busy going to Pilates every day, walking her dog and professing the wonders of a gluten-free diet on Twitter to talk about the film.

The only nod Cyrus has given to the movie is to thank her fans for promoting it and to retweet a link to the film's website.

It's got to be a tough break for Cyrus, who was largely counting on the film's success to help her transition to more grown-up roles. While Liam's rise to fame doesn't appear to be affecting their relationship, it might explain some of Cyrus' recent behavior.

The 19-year-old recently tweeted a photo of her left hand while wearing what looked liked a diamond ring, sparking engagement rumors, and has been making headlines for her rapidly shrinking body, prompting her to deny that she has an eating disorder. And we can't forget that her apparent lack of love for undergarments also landed her in the news when she showed off a significant amount of side boob, while wearing a shirt with no bra.

All of these incidents on their own seem par for the course in Hollywood, but with the disappointing turn in her career, it all seems like a desperate cry for attention.

Is Miley Cyrus' New Movie Being Buried Because of The Hunger Games?!

Why is Miley Cyrus's new movie being buried? Does it have anything to do with Hunger Games?
—Harp00n, via the inbox

If you're looking for somebody to start a feud between Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lawrence—well, sure, why not?

It's all Lawrence's fault. Let the Twitter war commence.

So yes, Cyrus's new movie with Demi Moore, LOL, is clearly being buried by Lionsgate. And blaming the studio's megahit The Hunger Games may not be all that off base:

Back in 2010, Cyrus shot LOL, a teen-relationship-type flick with Moore. It's based on a 2008 French hit by the same name. When Lionsgate agreed to distribute the $11 million project, then-production president Allie Shearmur issued a royal welcome, calling LOL "the kind of smart, fresh and accessible comedy that...is a great fit for Lionsgate's release slate."

Cut to today, when, according to reports, Lionsgate is doing no publicity for LOL and plans to release it May 4 in only seven cities. If that date sounds familiar, it should: It's also the opening weekend for Avengers.

So why the sudden assault on Cyrus's movie?

According to the Los Angeles Times, Lionsgate may have worried about how to sell the flick. Yes, it has Cyrus as a selling point. But that's about all it apparently has.

"It lacks the obvious marketing hook of high-profile films like Hunger Games and the upcoming adaptation of the bestselling pregnancy book What to Expect When You're Expecting," the paper noted today.

And speaking of Hunger Games: LOL's director, Lisa Azuelos, hints to the Times that the blockbuster may have had some role sinking her movie. Azuelos said she was told by suits that they couldn't give LOL any love until after Games debuted.

"They couldn't take care of my movie, and I waited in line," the director is quoted as saying.

Lionsgate spokespeople declined to comment for this story.

Perhaps the studio expects all of its films to be based on mega-best-sellers from now on? (Lionsgate also recently merged with Summit, the studio behind the Twilight series, so that's another superfranchise the company is overseeing.)

But here's another factor to consider:

According to the latest Davie Brown Index, which measures celebrity popularity, Cyrus' appeal score reached a high point of 66 in 2008. That number has since dipped by six points.

That isn't to say that Cyrus's career is over; far from it. A score of 60 is still considered decent, if not amazing, and Cyrus's next project, the action comedy So Undercover, debuts in June.

Miley Cyrus' 'LOL' gets no love from Lionsgate

"LOL" was supposed to represent a big step for Miley Cyrus' movie career as she attempts to mature beyond her saccharine sweet image as Disney's Hannah Montana. Instead, it has turned into a tough lesson about how quickly a Hollywood studio can fall out of love with a movie.

The Cyrus movie was made in 2010 and produced by Mandate Pictures for about $11 million, with money raised primarily from sales to foreign distributors. Lionsgate, Mandate's parent company, acquired domestic distribution rights for several million dollars. In a statement released at the time, Lionsgate's then-production president, Allie Shearmur, described it as "the kind of smart, fresh and accessible comedy that ... is a great fit for Lionsgate's release slate."

It lacks the obvious marketing hook of high-profile films like "Hunger Games" and the upcoming adaptation of the bestselling pregnancy book "What to Expect When You're Expecting."

Azuelos said she was told by Lionsgate executives that they couldn't give "LOL" the proper attention until after "Hunger Games." "They couldn’t take care of my movie, and I waited in line," the director said, sounding frustrated.

In fact, "LOL" would likely have gone direct to DVD, the knowledgeable people said, but Mandate's contracts with foreign distributors contained a provision that the movie must be shown domestically in at least 100 theaters. As a result, the studio has very quietly decided to release "LOL" in seven cities on May 4, the same day as the sure-to-be blockbuster "Avengers," which is expected to open to more than $100 million.

Lionsgate set the May 4 date recently without making any formal announcement and has apparently planned to do no publicity.

In a sign of how low a priority "LOL" is at Lionsgate, its marketing is being handled by the studio's home entertainment division, not its theatrical marketing team, which typically oversees any release going to theaters.

A studio spokeswoman said that Cyrus was not available to discuss "LOL" due to her schedule. On her Twitter page, the actress has within the last weeks written about spending her time obsessively watching the television show “Prison Break,” eating walnuts, and walking her dog. This week, she also thanked her fans for promoting "LOL."

"LOL" marks the first PG-13 film for Cyrus, 19, who has previously found some success in more kid-friendly fare. A documentary following the pop star on her Hannah Montana concert tour grossed a solid $65.3 million in 2008, and "Hannah Montana: The Movie" performed even better the next year, collecting $79.6 million. Even 2010's tear-jerker "The Last Song," based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, generated a respectable $63 million.

This summer, Cyrus will appear in The Weinstein Co.’s “So Undercover” as a private eye investigating a college sorority house.

"LOL" is certainly not the first movie to linger on a studio's shelves before getting a less-than-enthusiastic release. Paramount Pictures' Eddie Murphy comedy "A Thousand Words" was shot in 2008 and only hit theaters this past March with a relatively small marketing campaign and very little support from its star.

Despite the lack of attention Lionsgate is giving the movie, the team behind "LOL" reserved hope that it will overcome the odds.

"It's a mother-daughter story that's really fresh and could find an audience," said producer Michael Shamberg.

"Your country is so big, so I’m very flattered the movie is being released," added Azuelos, who with "LOL" makes her American debut. "I wish it would be a national release. And I’m still hopeful that in those seven cities it’s going to be big and grow and grow."

Miley Cyrus' 'LOL' Trailer: 5 Key Scenes

It's been a long time coming for Miley Cyrus' remake of the 2008 French film "LOL." Since the announcement back in 2010 that the film is being distributed by Lionsgate, news on the movie has been lacking. Well, not anymore, Cyrus fans.

On Tuesday, the official trailer for the film dropped, which gives fans a preview of what the movie has in store. In a generation that spends more time updating the world about their problems than their families, 17-year-old Lola's (Cyrus) status is constantly changing. As an attempt to get back at her — now ex — boyfriend Chad for cheating on her with Ashley (Ashley Greene), Lola starts seeing his best friend, Kyle (Douglas Booth).

Her life begins to spiral downward as her grades drop while she experiments with drugs and sex, and a divorce has her mom completely oblivious to it all. Soon she starts to fall for Kyle and things get even more complicated. The trailer is a great peek at the teen drama, and we have the five key scenes from it.

EX-Boyfriend
The trailer begins with Lola's voice over: "Every year it's weird going back to school, but here we are just going with the flow, trying to love and laugh out loud." She abruptly stops laughing when she calls out Chad on not texting her throughout the summer and he admits he hooked up with Lola's rival Ashley. She acts like she doesn't care, but as soon as she enters her room she begins crying on her bed. This emotional scene sets up the rest of the trailer.

A New Beginning
Lola quickly gets over her failed romance as she begins hanging out with Chad's best friend Kyle. A montage begins of their new friendship as they share a lollipop, rock out on an air guitar and come this close to kissing by his car. Everything is even more wonderful when he tells her, "You're amazing." We imagine audiences will quickly become fans of Booth.

"I can't believe I ever dated you!"
But the puppy love comes to a halt when Lola begins her sexual awakening. It seems rumors begin circulating when Chad says to Lola in the school courtyard, "Now that you're giving it up I figured maybe I could get some." The next scene shows Lola lashing out and pushing him into a gate screaming, "I can't believe I ever dated you!" The trailer isn't clear on what exactly causes the outburst, but we're betting it's pretty bad judging by Lola's reaction.

Trouble In Paradise?
As it turns out, Chad's comment is just the beginning of situations that spiral out of Lola's control. The next few scenes show a fight with her mom about her grades dropping and a drunken make-out session with Kyle. Her life gets even worse as she witnesses Kyle walking with his arm around Ashley. When she confronts him about it, he denies it and she spits out, "You're disgusting." But we already knew Greene's character would cause a stir when Demi Moore told MTV News "she's really saucy."

"Status can change, but true love remains the same."
Throughout the next montage of scenes, we see "status can change, but true love remains the same" typed out across the screen as Kyle dedicates a song to Lola and she makes up with her mom. Finally, as a smiling Kyle rests his head on an equally happy Lola, the trailer leaves us with the feeling that despite the craziness of high school, everything will work out for Lola in the end. After all, she did say she just goes with the flow and high school is only the beginning.
