As they stage their long-awaited comeback, the Jonas Brothers have made one thing clear: they aren't afraid to get "uncomfortable" on their new music.
Before debuting "Wedding Bells" at their comeback show at New York's Radio City Music Hall, Nick Jonas told the crowd, "I don't think I've ever written a song that makes me as uncomfortable as this song does." Just how uncomfortable? Enough that his ex-girlfriend Miley Cyrus recently told Glamour that it's "pretty blatant" it's about her. Pretty darn uncomfortable.
If he knows what's good for him, Nick will take some trusty cues from Taylor Swift's playbook. Because if anyone knows how to write a breakup track, it's Taylor.
Make It Obvious Whom It's About
Notorious for penning about lost love, Taylor Swift has never shied away from including just enough details to identify her subjects without flat-out spelling it out. In 2009, the then 19-year-old country singer reportedly began dating then-32-year-old Casanova John Mayer in 2009, when the two started working on music together. Fast forward one year, and we're introduced to "Dear John," which finds Swift crooning, "Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone/ Don't think I was too young to be messed with?/ The girl in the dress cried the whole way home/ I should've known." By all means, we're not suggesting it's about Mayer. It just happens to be a song about dating another guy. That just happens to have the name John in the title.
Similarly, while "Wedding Bells," never mentions the name "Miley," there are lyrical cues that tell us this is more than coincidence. The most flagrant signal comes when Jonas croons, "If you recall our anniversary falls/ Eleven nights into June." In her autobiography (yes, she already has one), Cyrus writes, "I remember the exact date, June 11, 2006. It was the day I met my first love. Let's call him Prince Charming." Once again, we're not assuming. This could all be coincidence.
Never Admit Whom It's About
If there's one thing Swift has mastered besides relentlessly topping the charts, it's the art of playing coy. Even after all the rumors surrounding "Dear John," Swift insisted that the title didn't mean anything.
Apparently, Mayer didn't buy it. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the ladies' man said he was "humiliated" by the track. ("I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?" he said.) Staying true to her strict keep-it-vague rule, Swift later called Mayer "presumptuous" for assuming the track was about him in an interview with Glamour.
Don't Be Afraid Of Getting Vulnerable
On "Wedding Bells," Nick has no fear of being vulnerable, admitting that he "doesn't want to hear the wedding bells chime" and pining for one last shot with his ex. "No, I don't wanna love/ If it's not you/ I don't wanna hear the wedding bells bloom/ Maybe we can try/ One last time/ But I don't wanna hear the wedding bells chime," he sings.
Sounds awfully "Back to December," doesn't it? On the 2010 track, which was presumably about another famous ex, Taylor Lautner, Swift has no fear of "swallowing her pride" and admitting that she may miss him a little bit after all.
