Logan Lerman talks about 'surreal' experience of 'The Three Musketeers'

Actor Logan Lerman says he had a "surreal" experience playing D'Artagnan in the new film adaptation of "The Three Musketeers."

"D'Artangn is a cocky young swordsman at the beginning of the film," Lerman explained in an interview provided by the movie's studio, Summit Entertainment. "It's pretty surreal to actually be playing these characters ."

The film, based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas, is about of a young D'Artagnan, who travels to Paris to become a fighter sworn to protect the French monarchy. Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich), Cardinal Richelieu (Christoph Waltz) and the Duke of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom), plan to engulf Europe in a war. The movie also stars Matthew Macfayden, Ray Stevenson and Luke Evans as the titular Three Musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis.

"It's that fantasy when you're a kid, you know, running around the house with sticks pretending like you're sword fighting," he added. "Everyone wants to be D'Artagnan everyone wants to be one of the musketeers."

Although the actor said he had some experience with swashbuckling in his childhood, that actor had to train for months to get experience as a swordsman to be a believable D'Artagnan.

"We went thought months and months of training to be able to look like I could swordfight for this movie. So we trained for like three months, four months for this movie," Lerman said. "Then throughout filming, just everyday perfecting a new fight sequence. Our goal was to show audiences something they had never seen before. "

Still, even with the training Lerman said he found it hard to get into character before getting into costume. "I found it very difficult to get into the role and understand the character," Lerman said. "But the minute we go out here, you know, landed in Germany and started rehearsing at these locations and the wardrobe and everything -- it just kind of came together naturally."

Lerman is also known for his role in the 2010 movie "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Logan Lerman Took 'Three Musketeers' Role for Grandfather

Logan Lerman steps out at the 2011 Wondercon held at Moscone Center South over the weekend in San Francisco.

The 19-year-old actor sat down during the convention with a bunch of press and revealed why he first took the role of D’Artagnan in the upcoming The Three Musketeers.

“This is such an amazing role and I’m so honored,” Logan shared, “The reason why I really took it though was because…let’s jump back. My grandfather, as a child, had to leave his home and he actually grew up in China. He didn’t have much to take with him but one of the things he took with him was his favorite book, which was ‘The Three Musketeers’ [by Alexander Dumas]. And now to portray one of his favorite characters and for what this means for my family, it’s an honor.”

Logan Lerman Talks Three Musketeers, Says He Knows Nothing About Percy Jackson 2

At the age of 19, Logan Lerman (The Patriot, Jack & Bobby, Gamer) has been acting for over a decade and later this year will take on the most iconic character of his career — one of the most recognizable heroes in literature, even: D’Artagnan in Paul W.S. Anderson’s Three Musketeers. Lerman made his first trip to WonderCon with footage from the October 2011 3D action pic in tow and sat for a quick chat with Movieline about Anderson’s insane-looking take on the Alexandre Dumas novel, the reportedly in-the-works sequel to Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and a little-known YouTube user known as monkeynuts1069.

What was the appeal of playing D’Artagnan?

When it first came about, the first thing that came to mind was my grandfather; it was his favorite novel growing up, and D’Artagnan’s one of his favorite characters — one of the most iconic characters in literature. It was a big deal for me, and I looked at it as an opportunity unlike anything I’ve ever gotten to do. Really different from me — he’s a really cocky, cool, suave guy. I’m nothing like him. But it was a fun challenge, a cool time.

You were surrounded with quite a cast — Milla Jovovich, Luke Evans, Matthew MacFayden, Christoph Waltz, Orlando Bloom…

Everybody was fantastic. Everybody brought what they wanted for their character to play. The musketeers and I, we all became very close because we were around each other for five months straight. We made a pact that we were really going to do something cool with this, that it was going to work. Everything has an intention, there was nothing that was gratuitous.

Nothing gratuitous, except for those flying pirate ships! But really, with a story like this that’s been adapted many times before, how do you make sure you’re doing it in a fresh new way?

Well this Musketeers is kind of like an untold chapter of the story, where the Musketeers are like weaponry experts, the James Bonds of their time. They’re the Navy S.E.A.L.s of their day, and that adds a different element to that story. It really separates itself from the rest of the Musketeers films that you’ve seen — it’s not just sword fighting.

Your most recent film was Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which was oriented to younger audiences. Do you consider Three Musketeers a first step in your adult career?

Yeah, definitely. Every day that I get older, hopefully. You know, I was younger back then when I started. It’s definitely more mature, another step. I just don’t want to repeat the same thing over and over again, so I’m always looking for something that’s going to be challenging and make me nervous every time I start a project.

It was recently announced that a sequel to Percy Jackson was in the works. What’s the status of your involvement in that, and what have you heard so far?

I know nothing about it, actually. I heard about it from everyone [at WonderCon] but I don’t know much about it. I know what you guys know. I’m very curious to see what’s going to happen with it.

Lastly, let’s talk about monkeynuts1069.

Hmm? Oh, that’s my best friend’s YouTube account!

A while ago I stumbled across it and found the shorts you two made.

Yeah, those are a little embarrassing. [Laughs] My buddy Dean [Collins], my best friend and I growing up, we made all these videos. That was our childhood. Whereas other kids would be playing sports or whatever they do, we would be making films. So we thought, hey! Especially when YouTube started becoming really popular. Why not throw them on there? It’d be fun. We can show people something a little inside, what we did when we were younger.

Do you and Dean plan on making more films together?

We haven’t had any time or any reason, really, to make a new short. We’re kind of hoping to cross over into real, legitimate filmmaking. [Laughs] But Dean’s a great guy.

Three Musketeers will be released in 3D on October14.

The Three Musketeers line up in new images

The Three Musketeers has probably felt a bit left out this week, with all the attention being given to Bats, Spiders and Men of X, so the production has released two brand-new pics showng ye olde sword-slinging heroes in action.

While Paul W.S. Anderson’s first foray into 3D (the lamentable Resident Evil: Afterlife) failed to quicken many pulses, his next stab at extra-dimensiony filmmaking will hopefully be more Dumas than Dumbass.

The Brit director’s take on The Three Musketeers finds former the Percy Jackson, Logan Lerman, playing the dashing D’Artagnan.

He joins forces with the titular trio - Porthos (Ray Stevenson), Athos (Matthew Macfadyen) and Aramis (Luke Evans) - to fight the forces of badness (embodied here by Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz and Milla Jovovich) - all in the glorious third dimension.

Following on from a bunch of good-quality set photos released online a few months ago, today we’ve been given our first proper peek at the ‘all-for-one’ foursome in action.

Thankfully, the spirit of Alexandre Dumas’ tale of derring-do seems to be alive and slashing with costumes, weaponry and flowing hair (facial and otherwise) looking suitably classy.
