TOP PICK:Lorde Declares Her Love for Rihanna, Calls Her "Magnetic"

Lorde isn't just singing Taylor Swift's praises.

The "Royals" crooner is also giving Rihanna props, saying she's a huge fan of the Bajan beauty's fearlessness.

"She's just magnetic, you can't not look at Rihanna," Lorde told the Evening Standard's ES magazine. "I would buy anything Rihanna sold me. The way Rihanna embodies being a sexual woman feels very 'her'. I don't think she wears Swarovski crystals to please other people, I think she wears them because she's like, 'I feel amazing, you look better. I'm obviously the best-looking thing in this room.' She's so fearless and confident, I just love her."

Lorde went on to say parents need to "chill out" when it comes to criticizing Rihanna's influence, saying, "People should stop worrying about their daughters, I don't see a female without clothing as a terrible influence. There are worse things. Shooting people, glorifying violence."

Miley Cyrus: The Anti-Lorde

We cannot understand Lorde’s success without recognizing that it happened in the context of Miley Cyrus’ disgrace.

By now, everyone who cares enough to pay attention knows that Lorde took home the 2014 Billboard awards for Top New Artist and Top Rock Song.

I’m not going to deny that Lorde is talented – although I have to admit I feel a bit of nostalgia for the days when “Royals” never would have been labeled a rock song.

And of course no one would deny that “Royals” is catchy, that Lorde’s delivery is distinctive, or that it’s refreshing to see an of-the-moment artist (other than Macklemore) critique materialism and our obsession with celebrity. But were these attributes enough to launch Lorde to the top of the charts and thrust her into the pop spotlight? Enough to secure her status as Top New Artist?

I contend that we cannot understand Lorde’s success without recognizing that it happened in the context of Miley Cyrus’ disgrace. America couldn’t have fully-appreciated Lorde without first having been duped by Cyrus. Lorde’s innocence is magnified by Cyrus’s transgressions. Even their respective album titles reflect these differences: Cyrus bombastic Bangerz and Lorde’s serene Pure Heroine .

America, you’re so fickle. Remember when you loved Cyrus as Hannah Montana, or the inspirational lyrics of “The Climb”, or the exuberance of “Party in the U.S.A.”?

And then there was “We Can’t Stop”, with its blatant reference to drug use; then the now-infamous, raunchy VMA performance; and then finally “Wrecking Ball”, with all its naked, messy emotion. Oh sure, Cyrus is still a success, if we define success by the piles of money she’s making, but she’s lost America’s trust because she played a joke on us: She led us to believe she was one thing, an innocent country girl, and then made a mockery of the very values we thought she represented.

But perhaps what’s most interesting about all of this is that right around the time we fell out of love with Cyrus, we fell in love with another sweet young thing: Lorde.

Unlike “Wrecking Ball”, Lorde’s “Royals” is a song that has garnered almost unanimous critical acclaim. It went to the top of the alternative charts before it crossed over to the pop charts, and then of course once it became popular, hipsters tossed it out faster than an empty can of ironically-quaffed Pabst. (See also Gotye, Foster the People, and Awolnation.)

An analysis of the videos for “Royals” and “Wrecking Ball” will illustrate even more clearly how polarized the personae of these two pop stars are.

First, what do the two videos have in common? Both focus on beautiful young women wearing white, with lots of close-ups of eyes and lips. But that’s where the similarities end. Otherwise, “Royals” is an exercise in control; “Wrecking Ball” is an exercise in chaos.

In “Royals”, Lorde is mainly shown from the sternum up – effectively de-sexualizing her. She’s a static presence in the video, never moving from the spot in which she sings. Her expression rarely changes, and then only slightly. She is aloof and remote, distanced from both audience and the other characters in the video.

The primary setting of the video is a neat, nondescript suburban house with a white and beige interior, situated among many other similar suburban houses that line two sides of a street. The other characters in the video are teenage boys with whom Lorde has no interaction. They are mostly shown quietly engaging in mundane activities like washing their faces, shaving, sitting, getting out of bed, eating, swimming, and riding a bus. Even their boxing match seems restrained. Everything about the video signifies order and control.

In “Wrecking Ball”, Cyrus is first seen nearly naked in white underwear and t-shirt; and then completely naked (the most obvious metaphor for vulnerability) as she straddles a swinging wrecking ball. Her eyes are full of emotion, either crying or watery, and her expressive eyebrows convey regret and pain.

She’s an unstable, destructive force as she licks a sledgehammer; prowls through the rubble of a destroyed room; and writhes on a huge pseudo-scrotum. She is both powerful (wielding a weapon and the sole character dominating the landscape of the video) and vulnerable (crying, alone, and naked), a dichotomy that some of us have a difficult time accommodating. The video is a messy, confusing mix of ideas and imagery in perpetual motion.

Both of these young women are expressing themselves through art, yet only one of them will continue to be America’s darling. But what makes one’s achievements inherently more laudable than the other’s (aside from the fact that Lorde actually wrote her song and Cyrus didn’t)? Nothing, really – except that only one of these young women has chosen to style herself (through her public persona, lyrics, and video) as a smart girl, a good girl, a girl in control of herself.

And maybe that’s the problem: Maybe we all see a little of Cyrus in ourselves, and maybe we don’t like what we see. We’ve all made bad wardrobe choices, we’ve all stuck fingers (foam or otherwise) where they don’t belong, and we’ve all had messy break-ups. We’re all a little screwed up; some of us just control it better than others. Most of have been taught to repress the Cyrus inside, the Cyrus inside, every single one of us the Cyrus inside…

Lorde appeared on the pop landscape just in time to provide America with an acceptable alternative to Cyrus. Lorde is safe. Lorde is respectable. Parents aren’t going to have to explain to their children why Lorde is naked in a video, or writhing onstage, or sticking her tongue out lasciviously.

The fact is, most consumers of pop culture don’t do well with ambiguity and contradiction. We identify with girls or women, but we’re confused by females in flux. We’re drawn to innocence or sexuality, but we can’t contemplate the idea that they aren’t mutually exclusive.

Make no mistake, Lorde’s values are probably just as ambiguous and contradictory as Cyrus’s. (Everyone’s are; that’s what it means to be human. But for some reason we want to hold our pop icons to a different standard.) America just hasn’t figured it out yet. For example, in “Royals”, Lorde tells us she’s “never seen a diamond in the flesh”, and implies throughout the song that she “craves a different kind of buzz” than the one you get from owning expensive things. Yet she appears to be wearing a price necklace in the above video.

Whether she’s speaking through a persona or her lyrics are intended to be wholly autobiographical, that little stylistic choice might be just enough to undermine the anti-materialism message of the song, which is one of the things that made it so powerful and relatable for a middle-class American audience in the first place. To put it another way (paraphrasing Janice Joplin): Oh Lorde, won’t you buy me a Mercedes-Benz?

Is America perceptive enough to detect this kind of subtle hypocrisy? And if so, will it even care? We turned on Cyrus because we discovered she wasn’t who we thought she was. Is it only a matter of time before we turn on Lorde, too?

TOP PICK: Lorde Isn't a Fan of Her Hit Song "Royals"

"Royals" may have catapulted Lorde into superstardom...but that doesn't mean she likes the song.

The singer totally dissed her hit single, reportedly telling the Daily Record, "I listen to people covering the song and putting their own spin on it and I listen to it in every single form except the original one I put out and I realize that actually it sounds horrible."

"It sounds like a ringtone from a 2006 Nokia," she continued. "None of the melodies are cool or good. It's disastrous. Awful... but for the same reason, in the context of the way I released it, it just worked out."

This is the same song that won Lorde song of the year at this year's Grammy Awards, and also Best Pop Solo Performance.

What Lorde does like though is Justin Bieber's new song "Looking for You," which the New Zealander confessed on Twitter Friday.

"fffff**k this new bieber "looking for you" is truly great," she tweeted. "that prechorus melody is truly transcendent."

Hmm...do we smell a collaboration in the making?

TOP PICK: Lorde Falls Ill, Postpones Australian Tour Due to Chest Infection

Lorde's Australian fans will have to wait before the "Royals" songstress hits the stage. The Grammy winner is on the mend after getting sick.

"In case you missed the announcement earlier, i have had to postpone my australian shows because of a nasty chest infection and general ill health," she tweeted Monday. "I am so so gutted to have to do this but my parents and my team stepped in telling me i needed a break after being non-stop since the grammys in january."

"We will 100% be back for this tour (most likely in november) so don't worry about that,
she continued. "I just need time to get back to full gollum girl fitness before i go out playing shows again i'm truly sorry if i let you down or if you feel inconvenienced by this and i hope you can understand."

The 17-year-old pop star was scheduled to play eight dates in six Australian cities for the tour, with the first set to kick off in Melbourne on Thursday, according to Billboard. Lorde's team is currently working on rescheduling the dates, which will be announced as soon as possible. Ticketholders who can't make those dates will be given a refund.

The Many Celebrity BFFs of Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is like the girl at high school who knows absolutely everybody, but you're not quite sure how. She seems to move just as easily from friendship group to friendship group just as quickly as it takes for her to say, “Hey girlfriend!” But who does Taylor Swift count among her many celebrity BFFs?

Taylor and Selena Gomez are always snapped together at various awards ceremonies. The pair originally met backstage at a Jonas Brothers’ concert and have became fast friends. “So much about our lives have changed over the last couple of years, but our friendship has stayed the same”, Taylor has said. Although she’s not the best option to give boyfriend advice, perhaps Taylor can offer Selena some wise words when it comes to her beau, Justin Bieber.

Taylor Swift started following Girls creator, Lena Dunham, on Twitter, and the pair hit it off when they began private messaging. Lena contacted Taylor to let her know that her albums have got her through some tough times and the pair have since been papped at the Met Gala and the Grammys. They even shared some quality time together during Memorial Day weekend. We want to be BFFs with Lena Dunham too!

Taylor has described The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star Emma Stone as like a “sister” to her. The pair have known each other since 2008 and are often pictured at awards ceremonies together. We may start superimposing ourselves in between the two of them, we want to be involved in the BFF fun times.

Lorde may be one of Taylor’s latest BFFs to add to the collection. The Royals singer and Swift started a friendship in an unusual way…after Lorde dissed Selena Gomez on Twitter! They seem to have made nice though, and have recently become bezzies. That’s what we like to see! Girls shouldn't be at each other's throats over silliness.

Modern Family star Sarah Hyland has been popping up everywhere lately, most notably in pics with Taylor! The pair took a pic together at a house party (how very normal!) before having a boogie after the Golden Globes.

If there’s a pair we’d least expect to be BFFs it’s Taylor Swift and Her Grand High Sulky-ness, Kristen Stewart. But low and behold, it’s said that Taylor was the one to help Kristen through her breakup with Robert Pattinson. She may have about a million BFFs, but when there’s one in need, Taylor’s always there!

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry have been firm friends since hosting the CMA Music Festival special together in 2008. Taylor was also spotted partying up at Katy’s 25th birthday party the year after. Oh, the life of Taylor Swift!

We’d like just one celebrity BFF, we can’t help feeling that Taylor Swift has taken them all for herself. We’ll settle with just being BFFs with Taylor though. If she’ll have us.

TOP PICK: Lorde Calls Out 'Teen Vogue' for Photoshopping Her a "New Nose"

Let it be known that Lorde is not a fan of being Photoshopped. The 17-year-old singer has previously called out people for making her complexion picture perfect, and now she's taking issue with her TeenVogue shoot.

"Apart from the fact that I'm pretty sure this magazine gave me a new nose, I really like this photo," she Tweeted with the shot in question. We agree that her nose does look different here...thoughts?

Despite that criticism, she's still stoked about landing the cover. The "Royals" singer first shared her excitement of making the May cover on Tuesday. "So happy about this. Teen Vogue cover star yawwww," she Tweeted.

The New Zealand native was also psyched to learn that Lizzie McGuire herself came to a recent concert of hers. "Hilary Duff? Are you freaking serious? Hilary Duff was there last night?" she exclaims to the writer. "This is what dreams are made of! This is the most insane thing that ever happened to me!"

And here we would have thought winning two Grammys before turning 18 would be the craziest thing. All hail the power of Hilary!

TOP PICK: Lorde Shows Imperfect Skin in Non Photoshopped Pic, Says "Flaws Are Ok"

Pop stars get pimples, too! Lorde isn't flawless and she wants her fans to know she's totally cool with that. While most female pop stars want us to think they "woke up like this" (Beyonce, we're looking at you), the 17-year-old "Royals" singer is being real about her imperfections.

Lorde Tweeted these two photos yesterday, which show her at the same day of her South American tour. The top one is clearly retouched while the bottom is au naturel. "I find this curious. Two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. Remember flaws are ok :)," she concluded.

It's not the first time she's been open about her typical teenage skin issues. In February, she shared a makeup up free selfie in bed with zit cream. "In bed with my acne cream on," she captioned the photo.

We give her major props for keeping it real and hope her self-confidence inspires other girls to feel good about themselves, flaws and all. Maybe she'll be the next celeb spokesperson for Proactiv?

TOP PICK: Lorde's Boyfriend Speaks! James Lowe Opens Up About Being a Tabloid Target

We've often seen Lorde's longtime boyfriend James Lowe in pictures and while everyone else on the internet seems to have their opinions about him, we haven't heard a word from her guy himself...until now.

In a brand new blog post, the 24-year-old photographer muses about being under the media spotlight of his girlfriend Ella, who's won two Grammys, a Brit and is currently on a world tour. "I've experienced being a target of the tabloids, finding moments I thought I was in safe hands splattered all over the internet, being pushed and shoved, or watching others get pushed and shoved by paparazzi just to get what they think they're entitled to," he writes.

And while there's certainly negative sides to being in a such high-profile relationship, he can appreciate the opportunities that come with it, too. "I've been able to tell tales of the many amazing people I've met along the way - from fellow photographers, to artists I've always admired and never thought I'd get to meet, let alone have a simple thing like coffee with...more importantly, I've found a little inspiration from new faces. People I look up to. People whose work I admire so much."

He closes his insightful blog with a sweet shout-out to his leading lady. "For all of this I have to thank the one I look up to most. Who I admire the most. Who still feels the little voids I try to avoid," James writes. How cute is that? We may have a new contender for favorite couple on our hands!

TOP PICK: Lorde Turned Down Katy Perry's Offer to Open Her Tour - Find Out Why

Lorde lights up the stage during her show at The Fillmore Theatre on Sunday night (March 16) in Detroit, Mich.

The 17-year-old New Zealand native recently opened up about being “really stubborn” and “really independent,” which is why she turned down Katy Perry‘s offer for a spot on her tour.

“In the really early stages of an artist’s career it’s important for them to establish themselves for themselves,” Lorde told an Australian radio station. “I’m just basically really stubborn and I want to be really independent. So I want to be headlining my own shows instead of supporting someone else. Which I think is fair enough.”

Lorde's Awesome Reaction When Asked if She's in a Lesbian Relationship With Taylor Swift

Media people, take note: Lorde doesn't like being asked about her relationship with Taylor Swift. She also doesn't like snarky comments about lesbians, either.

This all came to light during an interview with The Kyle & Jackie O Show, an Australian radio show on KIIS 106.5, which asked the "Royals" singer a series of dumb questions about her BFF. "I see you guys' pictures everywhere...are you guys like, together now?" Kyle asked, to which Lorde, who has a long-term boyfriend, gave a long pause before answering, "Uhhhh."

Trying to fill the awkward silence, the deejay continued to dig himself deeper, adding: "Not together as in lesbians, not like Ellen [DeGeneres] together...you guys are friendly, right?" The 17-year-old singer took him to task for that comment, replying: "What do you mean, you're not talking about Ellen together? Is there something wrong with lesbians?"

"Oh my god, no!" he quickly backtracked. "I would love that! Are you gonna confirm now you're in a lesbian relationship with her?" Lorde shut down the nosy guy yet again, answering: "Don't even try it." But he continued pressing her about Tay, asking: "She's very down to earth, right?"

"Uh, yeah," Lorde finally replied. Finally, Kyle realizes she's not going to blab about her bestie and sarcastically remarked, "Well, don't go too overboard explaining the friendship then." "I won't, believe me," she shot back.

Did we mention we love Lorde? Did we also mention Kyle and Jackie O are same two deejays who pretended to be royal relatives of Kate Middleton and prank called the hospital where she was having her baby, causing a nurse who fell for it to commit suicide? Classy.

Taylor Swift & Lorde Show Their Fun & Silly Attitude in NYC!

Taylor Swift and her close gal pal Lorde pose for some fun pics while doing some sightseeing on Sunday (March 9) in New York City.

Earlier in the week, the 24-year-old country singer showed her American pride while hitting a ballet class in L.A.

“I love L.A. and New York and I spend a lot of time there promoting albums and doing photo shoots. I’ve been lucky enough to find friends who live in New York, L.A., and Nashville, so none of those cities ever feel foreign or lonely. Choosing to have my management company based in Nashville just made sense because my family is there as well as my record label,” Taylor recently shared to Time.

Taylor Swift sports her favorite color lips and nails as she gets out of her car and heads to dance class on Wednesday (February 19) in Los Angeles.

The day before, the 24-year-old singer was seen arriving at a studio in Hollywood.

Taylor‘s pal Lorde recently opened up about their friendship and the possibility that they’ll work together in the future.

“Yeah we are [different],” she told E! News. “But I think the cool thing about Taylor is she is pretty willing to go a lot of places with music.”
