Miley Cyrus' Behavior Is 'None Of Your Business,' Says Shailene Woodley

Don't worry, Miley Cyrus: Shailene Woodley has totally got your back.

In an interview for the July issue of Vanity Fair, the 22-year-old actress defended the famous pop star against negative public reactions to her image.

"Miley isn't rude or mean or cruel to anyone in her actions," she said. "She just does herself. And regardless of whether you agree with what she's doing or not, it's none of your business what she does."

The "Divergent" star says parents worrying about Miley should focus their concern elsewhere.

"If you don't want your kids to watch it, you know, you can change that situation at home, but don't make a big deal of what she's doing," Woodley said. "Make a big deal about the bullies at school who are beating kids up."

It's no surprise that Woodley would empathize with Miley, as the "Fault in Our Stars" actress values being oneself above almost all else.

"People that I look up to in life are people who make a difference, and brave, strong women," she said. "The greatest people who have inspired me in my life don’t go out trying to be a role model. They just are devoted ... and they’re not afraid of what other people think of them.”

On her favorite foods: Sweet potatoes are unreal. I eat chocolate every day. Raw chocolate, hands down, the best gift to human beings. My favorite dish to cook…any sort of pot roast. In a ceramic enamel pot. You just can’t go wrong with the flavors. That’s always my go-to. But what I do most often is generally an egg dish with whatever vegetables are in season because it takes 10 minutes, and you have the tastiest meal ever. You got your protein, you got your veggies, you got a little carbs in there.


On her proudest physical feature: I guess I’m proud that I’m very fit. That’s not a physical feature but I’m very proud that if somebody was like, ‘Alright, we’re walking to Central Park right now. I’d be like, ‘let’s run to Central Park right now.’ I’m really proud of my ability to be fit or stay fit and honor my body in that way. In a fight or flight situation, I consider myself a fighter, and so regardless of whether I would win or survive or anything, I want to know that I can give it my all. When I feel fit and when I feel strong, I feel like I can empower and fight back.

On her dream gig: I would love to play Stevie Nicks. She’s just such a fascinating woman who’s lived such a life and is still living such a life. Her music was really profound for me in my life. Yeah I think it’d be an adventure to play Stevie Nicks. I love that there is no other Stevie Nicks in this world. She is so fully herself, and undividedly herself. That in itself is such a powerful lesson to take in and be like, ‘wow.’ No one is going to be the next Stevie Nicks and Stevie Nicks was next the next anyone. And I think that’s such beautiful advice for all of us. You do you, we do we. She does she in such a beautiful way. I think it’d be great to sing in a film. I love to sing. I guess another dream movie would be a movie like Once. It’s so romantic and sensual and musical but doesn’t feel like a musical necessarily.”

On the bigger issues: “As much as this industry is a platform for talking about big issues, there’s also so many issues. You could talk about Russia, or Argentina, or fracking, or G.M.O.’s. Maybe the only thing that I’m supposed to do is just show up and be me in every moment. Because I do feel like one of my gifts is to be open and lovely—simple things like smiling at strangers and having kind, small interactions. I think that is what’s going to ultimately shift things.”

On George Clooney: “He has been an angel in my life for many reasons. He knew everyone’s name on set,” she says. “He treated everyone as an equal and everyone got his warmth.”

On being cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2: “For a few hours it was literally like, ‘Oh, my God, was I awful? Why did they cut me? What are people going to think?’ I woke up the next morning and I was like, ‘O.K., it makes total sense.’ I’m a pretty spiritual person, so I can just sit back and trust that everything happens for a reason, even if my ego doesn’t like it.”

TOP PICK: Shailene Woodley's 'Fault in Our Stars' Beats Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow' at Weekend Box Office!

The Fault in Our Stars, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, took the top spot at the box office with $48.2 million!

According to THR, The Fault in Our Stars, which grossed an additional $17 million internationally, beat Tom Cruise‘s Edge of Tomorrow in 16 of the 17 international markets where it opened this weekend.

Angelina Jolie‘s new film Maleficent grossed another $33.5 million for the second spot at the box office, making its total domestic earnings $127.4 million.

Edge of Tomorrow, which took approximately $178 million to make, came in third with $29.1 million.

Rounding out the top five were X-Men: Days of Future Past, starring Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and the new Charlize Theron and Seth MacFarlane comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West, which brought in $14.7 million and $7.2 million, respectively.

TOP PICK: Shailene Woodley Reveals What Cancer Patients in 'The Fault in Our Stars' Told Her

Out of all of the stars Shailene Woodley has worked with, the cancer patients in Fault in Our Stars taught her the most.

The 22-year-old actress revealed what it was like working alongside teens battling cancer while she filmed the movie, telling People it made her "want to wake up every single day and be the best version of me."

"A lot of that has to do with Fault and meeting these 16- or 18-year-olds who had a week to live or passed away while we were filming," she continued. "Doing that film taught me that there is no room for fear. Zero."

In the film adaptation of John Green's successful novel, Shailene plays cancer patient Hazel Grace Lancaster, who meets the love of her life in a cancer support group.

Although Shailene learned a lot from the cancer patients, she also felt a little guilty making the film with them, telling the mag, "There is just no way to justify life. Why am I here making this couple-million-dollar movie and eating a nice meal with [my costar] Laura Dern, and at the table right next to us is a 16-year-old boy with a tumor growing out of his head?"

From that experience though, she learned to embrace life even more.

"Are we going to spend life wallowing, or are we going to be stoked and laugh? We have no idea [when we will die], so it is just about living life to the fullest," she said. "Laughing feels so good. I tell you, all my older friends laugh a lot and have no wrinkles. That is the secret to good skin, I swear. Everyone has this big thing about chemicals and facials, but it is just laughter."

Just one more reason why we love Shailene.

That’s when I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to this, because there’s something really wrong here.”




On eating right: “I listen to my body. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m really tuned in to what it needs. Sometimes I can go weeks at a time without eating meat because all my body wants is vegetables and rice and not much protein. Then I’ll go through other times where for months on end I just need red meat or chicken or eggs right now. Our bodies are constantly changing, so if you were to eat a certain way forever, I don’t see how that could possibly be right for you.”




On how The Fault In Our Stars changed her: “I find myself living in two worlds sometimes—being this person who can walk a red carpet in a huge, fancy-ass ball gown, high heels and crazy amounts of makeup, but also being the girl at a hippie festival in the middle of the forest with war paint on my face, dancing around with hairy armpits. I exist so well in both, and I used to feel like I had to choose one or the other. I struggled with that up until doing The Fault in Our Stars. I have one life to live, and it could end any minute, so I’m going to appreciate every single moment. I’m going to own my day before my day owns me. Show up the way you expect others and the world to show up for you, and that’s all there is to it. Life is too fleeting, too unpredictable and too unfair to focus on anything else.”

Don't expect to see Shailene Woodley Instagramming anymore. Although the Divergent starlet has 20,000 followers, she recently erased all of her photos after the social media photo sharing app "felt disgusting."

"Everything I was posting was for a story - like, 'Look how interesting I am.' It felt disgusting to me," she explains in the April issue of Marie Claire magazine. "We're all such narcissists, and that's what social media caters to. Our society conditions us to be our own planets, which is great. Independant thinking is so important. But we expect everyone around us to be our moons."

Other interesting tidbits we learned about the actress in this article is that she didn't have her first kiss until 15 and a half and she's not sure whether monogamy is realistic. "I just haven't met anyone where I was like, 'Wow, I could definitely see myself spending a season of my life with you.' I don't even know if humans are genetically made to be with one person forever," she says.
