Demi Lovato speaks on dad's death

Demi Lovato reveals her father didn't "function very well in society" before he passed.

The 20-year-old singer's dad Patrick died recently after a battle with cancer. Lovato revealed on Thursday that he suffered from a mental illness.

It was previously reported she and her father were estranged for several years, but Lovato has a lot of compassion for her late father.

"I've dealt with mental illness. My father dealt with mental illness," she said during an appearance on "Good Morning America." "He wasn't able to function very well in society."

Lovato struggles with bipolar disorder, and has also previously discussed issues with self-harming and an eating disorder.

The star used her TV appearance to announce she would be setting up a scholarship in her dad's honor to help one person at a time pay for mental illness treatment.

"I'm working with Cast Recovery, a treatment center I've worked really, really closely with, and I have trust in their program," she said.

The "X Factor" judge added that she and her father did not have a close relationship.

A few weeks before he died, Patrick reached out to his daughter via Radar Online, telling the website he "just wanted his little buddy back".

"My father and I didn't have the most ideal relationship," Lovato acknowledged during her TV interview. "But at the end of the day, he's still my dad. And I grew up with him, he was a wonderful person. And it's difficult. But I'm handling it OK."

Lovato also paid tribute to her fans for their support during difficult times.

"The best thing about my fans is they have stood by me for everything I've been through," Lovato said. "And this past week has been a rough week. I had incredible support from them."

The star is keeping busy promoting her new single, "Made in the USA."

Demi Lovato: Missed 'X Factor' Photo Shoot After Dad's Death

ollowing the death of her biological father, Demi Lovato took a little time off from work to be with family.

That meant missing out on an X Factor related obligation--a photo shoot she was to do over the weekend with her fellow judges.

Though Demi and her dad were estranged following her parents' divorce, there's no doubt that his death had an impact on her and she needed the time off to grieve.

In 2009, Demi told the Daily News: "The last time I talked to him was two years ago," adding, "You try to have faith in somebody, even when you're the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what else to do."

She continued, "I had to cut off all connection. It was hurting me too much."

Demi's song "For The Love Of A Daughter" spoke of their strained relationship and hinted at his alcohol abuse.

Demi Lovato misses ‘X Factor’ photo shoot after estranged father Patrick Lovato dies

Simon Cowell tweeted a heartfelt message for the ‘X Factor’ judge after learning her father passed away.
Demi Lovato's estranged father, Patrick Lovato, passed away over the weekend.

The 20-year-old pop star's older sister Dallas Lovato confirmed the news on Twitter, writing "Rest in peace Daddy, I love you…" on Saturday night.

It's unclear what caused his death, but Lovato's 53-year-old dad reportedly battled cancer in recent years.

The "Skyscraper" singer and Patrick Lovato had a rocky relationship since he and her mother, Dianna De La Garza, divorced in 1994. Lovato told the Daily News in 2009 that it had been years since she spoke to her father.

"The last time I talked to him was two years ago," she said at the time. "You try to have faith in somebody, even when you're the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what else to do."

"I had to cut off all connection," she added. "It was hurting me too much."

In her song "For the Love of a Daughter," from her 2011 album "Unbroken," Lovato hints that her father may have had issues with alcohol.

"It's a very personal song," she later told the Daily Mail, "'Oh father, please father, put the bottle down...' The lyrics are self-explanatory about my relationship with my estranged father whom I haven't spoken to in five years. I wrote it when I was 16 and getting it out is like therapy."

While Lovato struggled with her own issues with bipolar disorder and self-harm in 2010, her father attempted to contact her, without success.

"I love her so much, and I just want her to call me," he told Radar Online last year. "This is the only way I can talk to her, I try to reach her but it never works."

It is unclear whether the "Give Your Heart a Break" singer had spoken with her father before he died.
Lovato, a judge on popular singing competition "X Factor," bowed out of a scheduled photo shoot Saturday after the news broke.

"My thoughts are with you Demi," show creator Simon Cowell tweeted on Sunday.
My thoughts & prayers are with you @ddlovato," Mario Lopez wrote, sharing a photo of the judges posing without her. "God bless you & your family."

Scores of Lovato’s fans took to twitter with messages for the singer, encouraging her to stay strong, like the tattoos sprawled across her wrist.

LISTEN TO ORIGINAL RECORDINGS OF DEMI LOVATO’S ‘SHUT UP AND LOVE ME’ + ‘FOR THE LOVE OF A DAUGHTER’

Fans of Demi Lovato have two new recordings to enjoy from the ‘X Factor‘ judge. ‘Shut Up and Love Me,’ is an unreleased fan favorite, while ‘For the Love of a Daughter’ is a three-year-old demo of a song that ended up making its way onto Lovato’s 2011 album ‘Unbroken.’

Lovato wrote ‘For the Love of a Daughter’ with William Beckett of The Academy Is… for her 2009 release ‘Here We Go Again,’ but her label and management reportedly thought the subject matter was too heavy for Lovato’s pre-teen audience at the time.

The track tackles the relationship between a girl and her estranged father, with Lovato singing, “Oh, father, please, father / I’d love to leave you alone / But I can’t let you go / Oh, father, please, father / Put the bottle down / For the love of a daughter.”

As for ‘Shut Up and Love Me,’ a pleasant mid-tempo love song, Lovato told MTV, “We’re trying to find the right place on an album where it fits. The last two albums it hasn’t really fit, so maybe this next one it’ll be released.”
