Vanessa Hudgens keeps up her workout routine with a pilates class on Wednesday morning (April 24) in Studio City, Calif.

It was just announced that Spring Breakers would be released on DVD and Blu-ray on July 9th!

Spring Breakers summary: Brit (Ashley Benson), Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Hudgens) and Cotty (Rachel Korine) are best friends anxious to cut loose for spring break, but they don’t have the money. After holding up a restaurant for quick cash, the girls head to the beach in a stolen car for what they think will be the party of a lifetime…until they’re thrown in jail.

But they are bailed out by Alien (James Franco), a local rapper, drug pusher and arms dealer, who lures them into a criminal underbelly that’s as lurid as it is liberating for a close-knit gang of girlfriends who are still figuring out their paths in life.

Selena Gomez: I had a 'mini breakdown' filming racy 'Spring Breakers'

Selena Gomez says the strain of being in the limelight during the making of Spring Breakers caused her to have a breakdown.

The clean-cut actress claims the attention brought about by her donning a bikini on set and the constant party scenes ended up as a stressful ordeal.

And the 20-year-old Disney star - whose character is called Faith - admitted being ogled by admirers whilst wearing her skimpy outfits could be intimidating at times.

She said: "There was too much attention - photographers, hundreds of fans, and all of us in bikinis in the pool.
"I had a mini breakdown on set. I got overwhelmed doing some of the things we were doing and having such an active audience at all times, even though I knew at heart we were super safe."

Fortunately for movie-goers, Selena felt able to continue filming after an emotional heart-to-heart with the director's wife, Rachel Korine who starred alongside the actress in the flick about four tearaway teens who gets on the wrong side of the law during a riotous break away from college.

Selena Gomez on running wild in Spring Breakers

The most beautiful shot in Harmony Korine's new film is the only uninterrupted travelling shot in a movie otherwise frenetic in its cutting. It is a restaurant robbery shot from the getaway car after it drops off two girl-robbers at the backdoor, then glides around the building capturing the chaotic but, to us, completely silent hold-up of the diners through two distancing layers of glass, before picking them up again at the front door and speeding off into the sultry night. In Spring Breakers it performs the same transitional function as the tornado in the Wizard of Oz or the rabbit hole in Wonderland. Before it, the colours are muted and monochromatic and the four leads are bored and broke; afterwards the colours go all neon and ice-cream, fluorescence dialed up to 11, and the girls, as they say, go wild.

Meeting the 20-year-old Selena Gomez, it's easy to draw a connection between the bad girls' pupa-to-imago transformation and the cast members' desire to cross the difficult threshold between teenage superstardom and the adult careers they surely now crave. If any movie gets that particular job done for Gomez and fellow teen superstars Ashley Benson and Vanessa Hudgens, it will be the toxically dreamlike Spring Breakers, a surprise hit in the US. But one has to ask how the former seven-year-old co-star of Barney and Friends and The Wizards of Waverly Place ended up in a movie that shows drunk girls urinating through their bikinis in public and forcing a gangsta-looking James Franco to suck off his handgun.

"Oddly enough, it was my mom's idea!" Gomez laughs, her voice a little deeper than you might expect. "She's a huge Harmony fan. She got the script and said it was totally what Harmony's vision was, summed it all up. So we watched all of his old movies and, I gotta say, I was a little hesitant at first. But I went to Nashville and met Harmony and I instantly became comfortable with him."

But just being in a Korine movie is a career statement in itself, isn't it?

"I feel like it's evolution. You've got to push yourself as an actor if you're going to grow, and that's what we're doing, pushing ahead, learning all the time. Plus, with a Harmony movie, my movie-buff friends are a little more impressed by me now," she chuckles.

And what of Franco, playing a greasy gangsta pimp and gun-dealer? She rolls her eyes in amazement: "Fabulous! Our jaws were on the floor when he showed up with his grill and his tattoos, and he stayed in character the whole time. He's a dream actor. Astonishing. He lures people in, and regardless of how he looks a spell is cast. He pushes them off into the unknown and the girls become even more perverse and subversive than him."

Not that it was all plain sailing. The movie was shot last year during a real spring break in St Petersburg, Florida, amid the kind of week-long teen chaos – motels on fire, pools filled with furniture, kids shagging in the street – that it takes a resort town a year to recover from. Korine set up fiestas of his own in party hotels where no one had slept in a week, or just affixed his cast and story to bacchanals already long in progress.

"The whole filming process was a party," recalls Gomez. "Parties that we were thrown into, real parties in these kids' apartments, their dorm rooms, their motel rooms – their party outside and ours inside, mixing them all up."

Predictably, the paparazzi would get word. And Gomez, tabloid-catnip for a while now given the Justin Bieber connection (the couple split up last November after almost two-years together), bore the brunt.

"I had a mini-breakdown on set,"she remembers. "There was too much attention, photographers, hundreds of fans, and all of us in bikinis in the pool. I got overwhelmed doing some of the things we were doing and having such an active audience at all times, even though I knew at heart we were super-safe."

Rachel Korine, Harmony's 26-year-old wife, playing a dual role on the set as elder cast member/den-mother, and as emissary from the director's chair to the cast, remembers: "Harmony went over to her and said: 'This is really happening, this is you right at this moment,' and he encouraged her to use it, and from that moment on she imbued her character with a whole new extra dimension."

"It really did work," agrees Gomez. As the symbolically named Faith, she is the only character who goes to church, the only non-participant in the robbery, the only one who keeps her bikini on throughout, and the first one to realise that this craziness will lead to mayhem and violence, and leave.

Meeting Gomez alongside her three co-stars (I see my jotter contains the unfortunate notation: "Jailbait Apocalypse!"), it is evident that her own personality is akin to Faith's. Korine is big-sisterly and diplomatic, Benson and Hudgens are goofy, gabby, earnest and lovable by turns, while Gomez, the youngest and the only non-blonde in the movie, is often the one who sensibly and self-deprecatingly re-routes a conversation going adrift, who actually answers the original question, exuding the kind pragmatism, sanity and poise you might expect from a hard-bitten 13-year veteran of the kiddie-showbiz wars.

Gomez spent 2012 away from her music career, specifically to develop film work, but also because music "is always about me-me-me. There's a team and all – dancers, musicians – but in the end it's my name and face on the box. On a movie, it's these four beautiful girls and Harmony in a group project – it's no longer all about me-me-me – every single person matters. I love being part of that kind of family, you feel like you're educating yourself, going to a common destination, all in it together. While with music it's more like: 'Here I am in a sparkly dress – look at me!'"

I joke that not having to get naked for Spring Breakers must mean her agent is really earning his crust.

"Well, yeah," she laughs, "but it's also true to the character – the right thing for me to play, a good match of actor and role. I love Faith and relate to her. It was half easy for me and half hard, trying to balance myself out against how crazy the other girls were getting, since my character has to oversee things and thinks a little differently."

The gossip sites would have us believe that Bieber's ongoing public meltdown – if that's what it is – has a lot to do with the withdrawal of Gomez's steadying presence as his partner. The word is that if Gomez were still in the picture, it is likely that Bieber wouldn't be bashing paparazzi, gobbing on his neighbours, getting his bizarrely Jacksonian pet monkey seized at customs, or forcing his exhausted band to endure endless tour-bus reruns of his appearance on Saturday Night Live.

Meeting the real Selena Gomez, instead of the one compounded of rumour, innuendo, gossip and digital malice, it is easy to take this assessment at face value (though today, the subject of Bieber is out-of-bounds). Despite the lingering puppy fat, her diminutive stature and inarguable girlishness, she can sometimes seem like, if not the only adult in the room, then the most adult young-adult. Bieber's right to miss her calming and emollient presence.

Living under the heaviest public scrutiny, subject to wild rumour and gossip, and relentless pursuit by the paparazzi, I have to ask her what it is like inside this hurricane of unreality?

"Luckily I've been able to experience it all before," she says with an air of almost gravelly road-weariness. "I grew up in one of the biggest high schools in the world – The Disney Channel. I grew up with the Jonas brothers and Miley [Cyrus]. I got to experience all that at such a young age, unfortunately – or fortunately – that now it just doesn't faze me. At this point in my life I have really good people around me. It's the people who don't have much going on in their own lives who get more out of this than anyone, more than me, even." Evidently the science and art of raising showbiz kids has come a long way since the school nurse at MGM high school in 1939 would call Judy Garland out of class for her "vitamin shots".

Does she ever look online and say: "Hey, looks like I'm in a feud with –?"

"Oh yeah, that happens. Vanessa walked up to me last month and said, about some TMZ rumour or online thing that claimed we were arguing: 'Selena, I guess we're fighting!' And I was like: 'Aaall-right! Let's get into it! Put 'em up!" Somewhere out there is a fat, unhappy, middle-aged man at a computer wondering aloud to himself: 'Hmmmmm, what can I say about a 20-year-old girl to ruin her whole day?' It's crazy. But it's worth remembering that it's not in any way real, either."

Selena Gomez worries about her young fans watching Spring Breakers

Selena Gomez has admitted that she worries her young fans will "sneak in" to cinemas to watch new film, Spring Breakers.

Speaking of her worries to The Hollywood Reporter, about the Harmony Korine-directed flick, Gomez said: "There's gonna be the intrigued pre-teens that are gonna want to sneak in and see the movie, and that's obviously something I can't control."

She added: "[I can] definitely warn them as best I can, but the movie is rated R, and it's kind of a given when you see the trailer that you should be old enough to see the movie."

Gomez stars as one of four college friends who turn to crime in order to fund their spring vacation, a role which she had previously described as completely different from her previous work.

The former Wizards Of Waverley Place actress also revealed that Franco's turn as seedy drug-dealer Alien also "creeped" her out on set because the Oz The Great And Powerful actor kept in character between takes.

Spring Breakers will be released in the UK on April 5.

Ashley Benson and Selena Gomez Had to Gain Weight for 'Spring Breakers'!

When Ashley Benson found out she'd be spending a lot of time in a bikini for Spring Breakers, she made sure she was in top shape.

"I trained, worked out and went on a clean diet for a month," the actress said at the LA premiere. "And then I get there and [director Harmony Kormine] is like, 'You guys need to gain weight.' And I'm like 'Oh my god, I just spent all this money on a trainer. I did a complete diet and now you want me to eat Taco Bell? But I love eating anyway, so it's fine!"

And her costar Selena Gomez was her fast food partner in crime, according to Ash. "I love fast food. It's so bad, and [Selena] brings it out in me. Always at McDonald's!" she says.

"I never go to McDonald's, but every time I'm with Selena, she makes me eat so bad," she added.

Getting paid to eat junk food? That sounds like a pretty good gig to us!

Selena Gomez & Vanessa Hudgens 'Surprisingly Willing' To Get 'Graphic' In Spring Breakers, Says Director Harmony Korine

Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens were 100 percent committed to their racy roles in the upcoming "Spring Breakers," leaving director Harmony Korine wowed.

"They were surprisingly really willing," Harmony told Access Hollywood at the film's junket in Los Angeles, of former Disney darlings Selena and Vanessa's comfort with the movie's adult themes. "I still can't believe it.

"I guess they were at a point in their life where they just wanted to try stuff [and] do things that were more extreme, a bit more graphic, more adult," he continued. "They were with me the whole time."

The movie - which follows four college girls who get bounced from jail by an arms/drug dealer (played by James Franco) after robbing a bank to fund their spring break trip - features a graphic threesome with James, Vanessa and co-star Ashley Benson.

Harmony explained how the trio prepared for filming the intimate scene.

"Before they did their three-ways and stuff, we talked about it [and] figured it out," he said.

"They all seemed pretty into it [and] turned on by each other, so they went for it!" he added with a laugh.

"Spring Breakers" hits theaters on March 22.

Selena Gomez Stunned By Real-Life 'Spring Breakers'

Surprisingly, it wasn't that much talked-about threesome that got tongues wagging on the set of "Spring Breakers." According to the film's young actresses, it was the jaw-dropping antics of real-life vacationers included in various party scenes.

"That's the craziest thing I've ever experienced," Selena Gomez told MTV News recently of filming with the extras. Co-stars Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine agreed.

"We would literally be doing takes, and we were surrounded by real spring breakers," Benson explained. "We were kind of thrown into this whole thing and just — I've never seen anything like it. Literally, girls would be making out and their clothes would come off, and I was like, 'Oh god, the bottoms!' And then they'd come off. [I was thinking], I don't even know what I'm doing here."

And if you think director Harmony Korine masterminded these displays, think again.

"Totally willingly by these girls," wife Rachel Korine said. "No one asked them to do it. You get to see us in the scenes react naturally to our environment because we didn't know what was about to happen."

For many of the young starlets who spent their teen years on television soundstages and movie sets, this was their first taste of the debauchery many co-eds experience during their collegiate years.

"I know we've never been on spring break, so I've never actually been to motel parties where you hop to each room," Gomez said. "That's what this was."

"Spring Breakers" is open in New York and L.A., and will expand nationwide on March 22.

Spring Breakers: Selena Gomez & Vanessa Hudgens Share Their Moms’ Reaction To Rowdy Film

“Spring Breakers” stars Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens weren’t quite sure how their mothers would react to their latest roles as rowdy, bikini-clad bank robbers in their new movie, but the actresses said they were pleasantly surprised by their moms’ reactions.

“My mom was in love with the movie,” Vanessa told Access Hollywood with a grin, at the junket for the Harmony Korine-directed film in Los Angeles, when asked how her mom reacted to the racy film while watching a screening at the premiere.

In the R-rated flick, the former “High School Musical” star has a few steamy sex scenes – including a threesome with co-stars James Franco and Ashley Benson – but even the down and dirty moments didn’t faze Vanessa’s mom.

“All the really intense parts she was sitting behind me giggling!” the 24-year-old beauty said.

And Selena’s mother was also pleased with the film.

“My mom had already seen it,” she said, explaining that the film’s premiere screening was her mother’s second viewing and that her mom noticed new favorite moments from Selena the second time around. “She was really excited for me.”

As for what type of roles the actresses would like to tackle next, Vanessa and Selena both agreed they’d like to sign on for something a little less intense.

“I think [I’d like to do] probably something a little more light-hearted next,” Vanessa told Access with a laugh. “Like a romantic comedy or something like that. Something happy.”

Selena, 20, said she’s taking a brief respite from the screen – but will be back.

“I’m taking a break from acting for a little bit to get into music, so that will be next for me,” she said. “As for roles, yeah, I would definitely try something a little bit different. But I’m open to anything.”

“Spring Breakers” hits theaters on March 22.

Selena Gomez Joined 'Spring Breakers' Because Of ... Her Mom?

Despite the fact that things got "awkward" for Selena Gomez in "Spring Breakers," she never wavered in her decision to sign on to the Harmony Korine-directed film.

And while it's much more risque than anything she's done in the past, it was her mom (yes, her mom) who gave her the extra boost she needed to agree to it.

"Well, my mom is actually a big Harmony Korine fan, and we got the script through my agency," she told MTV News during a chat at South by Southwest. "I read it, I watched all of his movies with my mom and [watched] interviews, and I wanted to be a part of it."

Once her mind was made up, she met with Korine, the mind behind other controversial flicks like "Kids" and "Trash Humpers," and his wife, co-star Rachel Korine. "So I actually flew to Nashville, to Harmony and Rachel's house, and auditioned with him for about an hour and half," Gomez recalled. "I actually read with Rachel too, and I got the part."

"Spring Breakers" opens in limited release Friday (it goes wide on March 22), the same day Gomez revisits her clean-cut Disney alter ego Alex Russo in the "Wizards of Waverly Place" movie "The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex." Gomez said she didn't take the role just to show that she can play a naughtier character; it was the chance to expand her skills as an actor that drew her to the Harmony project.

"It wasn't necessarily about the reaction as it was just for me wanting to do something that was creatively challenging for me, because acting is everything to me," she said. "And it's the reason why I'm here."

She hoped the role would "really challenge myself and to see how far I could go. I thought Harmony was the perfect director to trust. And these girls were amazing, and James [Franco] is obviously incredible in this movie, so it was kind of a no-brainer for me."

"Spring Breakers" might be rated R, but soon it will also be "Rated MTV: Movie Awards Edition." MTV's Josh Horowitz will sit down with the ladies for an upcoming edition of "Rated MTV." Nick Offerman kicked off the six weeks of sit-downs last week when he chatted about "Somebody Up There Likes Me," and this week, Olivia Wilde joins us to open up about "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone."

The specials lead up to the third annual MTV Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week, which will run from April 8 through April 12, with a special airing every night at 11 p.m. ET. The cast of a film will be on hand to present an on-air clip before heading to MTV.com for a 30-minute sit-down interview with Horowitz. Stay tuned for more information.

Also, don't forget to tune into the Rebel Wilson-hosted MTV Movie Awards on April 14, airing live from the Sony Pictures Studio Lot in Culver City, California, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Shaken Selena Gomez Reveals 'James Franco Held Her Hand During Terrifying Spring Breaker Scenes'

Shaken Selena Gomez Reveals 'James Franco Held Her Hand During Terrifying Spring Breaker Scenes'

The Disney star said she was thankful for all James' support

Selena Gomez has admitted that James Franco was her knight in shining armour while she filmed difficult scenes for their upcoming teen movie Spring Breakers.

The Hollywood star revealed that one emotional scene - without specifying the nature - left her shaking with fear, but luckily the handsome Oz actor was nearby to gently guide her through, even holding her hand.

"I was shaking. We only did the scene three times, but I was shaking at the end," she told MTV News.com

"And I remember James just gave me a big hug and he was like, 'You did it. You were amazing.' I was so exhausted and the whole day was such a stressful day for me that it was great.”

James' kind words were exactly what the former Wizards of Wavely Place star needed as she went on to tell the entertainment network that just moments before director Harmony Korine terrifyingly revealed the highly charged scene would rely largely on improvisation.

"He goes ‘He's going to convince you to stay with the girls.' and I go, 'OK, well, what do I say? Am I sad? Am I mad? Am I scared?' And he goes, 'Sure.' And I was like, 'Well, wait a minute!'" Selena recalled.

“And that scene was absolutely intense and so real because I had no idea that that was going to happen, and James was so brilliant in it."

Selena recently spoke about her transition from Disney to Hollywood, saying that she felt ready for new challenges and was fully prepared for any public judgement over her her new adult role in the new flick.

Speaking on the sex scenes at the SXSW Festival this week, she said: "It’s kind of an awkward thing to mess with, the transition of doing what I used to do and wanting to do things like this so, I guess for me it’s a little awkward but I’m trying to do the best I can."

Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson Sing Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time" at SXSW

Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson channeled their inner Britney Spears Monday at SXSW, busting into an impromptu cover of "…Baby One More Time."

Rachel Korine joined her Spring Breakers co-stars on stage.

There's only one Brit, of course, but she got wind of this video - and gave props! "Awww @selenagomez can duet with me anytime," Spears tweeted.

"PS- I heard @springbreakers is AAA_MAZING! Can't wait to see it!"

It does look pretty ... unique. Check out the Spring Breakers trailer!

SIDE NOTE: The film features the girls covering Britney's ballad, "Everytime," with a K-Fed-esque James Franco on piano and the girls in bikinis and ski masks.

Now that alone is worth the price of admission.

SIDE NOTE #2: Britney, who recently split amicably with fiance Jason Trawick, is now dating a random but very nice-seeming guy named David Lucado.

Selena Gomez Talks 'Spring Breakers' Sex Scenes!

Selena Gomez wasn't shy at the Spring Breakers SXSW premiere!

Looking adorable as ever in a crop top and orange skirt, Selena showed up to the movie event in her home state, Texas, with costars Ashley Benson (who was sporting a new hair color!), Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco.

While no one really asked her about Justin Bieber, Selena did field questions about having more mature roles and her sex scenes in the flick.

"It's kind of an awkward thing to mess with, the transition of doing what I used to do and wanting to do things like this so, I guess for me it's a little awkward but I'm trying to do the best I can," she told the SXSW audience.

Selena doesn't have the most sex-filled scenes in the movie though! Ashley, Vanessa and James indulge in a threesome in the flick. Whoa!

Ashley explained, "Anything intimate on camera is obviously awkward. I did it with Vanessa and obviously James, but Vanessa and I couldn't be closer, she's my best friend so we were very comfortable with each other and James has done this a million times so he made sure we were comfortable, but you know what it turned out beautifully."

(Hmm, James has done this a million times?)

We can only imagine that the reaction to this film is going to be epic.

Spring Breakers hits theaters on March 22!

Selena Gomez is still reminding Justin Bieber that she's sexy and stuff

Either that, or the Disney actress is about to change careers and enter the finance industry - and is simply testing out a few outfits before walking into the board room.

Because while her Spring Break costars continue to flounce about at their film premieres in the kind of dresses that make us want to spin around in a circle really really fast while hoping we remembered to wear our biggest pair of knickers, Selena has suddenly invested in a LOT of suits.

Unfortunately, there appears to be a shortage of suit-material in the world at the moment. Because while her outfit earlier in the week was missing an entire back panel (and most of the front), the jump suit that she wore last night was missing a section from the front.

Thankfully Selena still managed to pull the outfit off (not literally - that kind of thing is generally frowned upon at red carpet events - just ask the team behind The Oscars).

And Selena isn't the only celeb who seems to be trying to communicate using the power of clothing alone. Kim Kardashian wants us all to know that she isn't letting her pregnancy getting in the way of dressing up like a seal, Jennifer Lawrence seems to be trying to make friends with Kate Middleton. And Jameela Jamil is using a chicken costume as a technique to repel men.

Which makes a lot of sense*.

*Makes remarkably little sense at all, really. But who are we to question the wardrobe choices of the rich and famous?
