Selena Gomez gains confidence on latest album

In her latest single, Come and Get It, Selena Gomez sings: "This love ain't finished yet."

Could the 20-year-old Texan - showing off newly blond streaks in her long dark hair - be talking about her off-again-on-again boyfriend Justin Bieber?

Or for that matter are any other songs on Gomez's new dance-themed solo album, Stars Dance, about The Biebs?

After all, even though they split up last year, they were photographed together in April in Norway. This after she generated much buzz during an appearance on David Letterman when the host told her he'd had Bieber on as a guest and "I made him cry."

"That makes two of us," Gomez responded.

"I think it's confidence," is all she'll say when asked what drew her to record Come and Get It.

She was in Toronto Thursday, looking a little jet-lagged after arriving from Paris where she was shooting the video for her as-yet-unannounced next single.

"I think as a young woman, I'm slowly becoming more comfortable in who I am and in my skin and just wanting to exude that as best as possible... I just felt Come and Get It was a great way to express that."

Asked who the new ballad, Love Will Remember is about, she says only: "Obviously, Love Will Remember is a personal song to me and I don't really need to say anything. I think my fans will get it. I think people will figure it out themselves."

This despite the fact she tells In Style magazine - on which she currently graces the cover - the song is indeed about him.

"I'm sure he'll love it too," she told the magazine before adding about their break-up: "It's uncomfortable that everywhere I go, people know. I don't like that. ... I'm a kid and a break-up is normal ... I'm doing my own thing, being with my friends and he's doing very well too."

Bieber, of course, has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately.

And clearly Gomez would prefer the focus to be on her new album, which is scheduled for a summer release. Her Canadian tour kicks off Aug. 14 in Vancouver.

So asked if she's still close to Bieber's family in Stratford - she was photographed kissing his younger brother Jaxon on a red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall - her nearby American publicist intervenes: "Next question. We're done actually. If we could wrap it up."

Still, Gomez's manages to say: "I don't think that's anyone's business. That's my life so I would rather focus on what I'm here to talk about it."

Selena Gomez Takes 'Control' Of 'Come & Get It' Video

A lot has changed for Selena Gomez since she decided to take a break from music more than a year ago. Onscreen, she has gone from Disney star to spring break partier, and offscreen, she has become a tabloid fixture.

And Selena has also changed in a really major way: She's grown up.

On Tuesday (May 7), during "MTV First: Selena Gomez," the pop star premiered her "Come & Get It" music video, showing off a confident and sultry side. Embracing the world-music feel of the song, Selena confronts the elements and makes it almost impossible for someone to deny her request to "come and get it."

But even though Selena is exuding womanhood in this new clip, that doesn't mean she wasn't a little anxious to premiere her first video in well over a year.

"I'm nervous," Gomez admitted. "I'm excited, though I honestly feel like it's the best video that I've done and I got to work with great people on it. It looks beautiful, the wardrobe looks great. It was fun for me to have a little more creative control over it."

Teaming up with director Anthony Mandler, who most recently directed Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" video, the two collectively worked to bring the Bhangra beat of "Come & Get it" to life.

"When I got the concept from Anthony, the director, it was perfect, because he did an earth, fire, wind water feel, and it was very, as he called it, 'earthy,' " Gomez said. "And I loved that, because I feel that's what the track represents, and I like that we applied it."

Shooting the video wasn't as easy as Gomez had hoped, especially the fire scene, which was reminiscent of her MTV Movie Awards performance last month. "It was hard because each setup, there were parts I absolutely loved about it, but when we did that fire thing, you would think I'd be hot, but I was freezing," Gomez revealed. "I was so cold, I was shaking as I was doing my dance moves."

But Gomez would stop at nothing to make sure this video was exactly what she wanted, and she hopes her Selenators appreciate this new direction she's taking. "I wanted to make it almost look like a film, so I've been applying that since taking a break from music to do movies," Gomez said. "It's been really fun, so hopefully they will kind of get the cinematography of it and they will like my outfits."

Selena Gomez's Evolution Mirrors Britney Spears'

From the sultry lyrics on "Come & Get It," to the sensual look for her new video to her red-hot performance on the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, Selena Gomez has seemingly made the transition from squeaky clean teen to grown-up diva.

She's not the first Disney star to grow up and mature in front of the spotlight: To help her navigate through this new chapter in her career, she's getting a little inspiration from none other than Britney Spears.

Gomez has made it no secret that she's a huge fan of Britney, crediting her as an inspiration behind her upcoming Stars Dance World Tour and last month's Movie Awards performance, claiming that "I'm a Slave 4 U" was her favorite performance of any awards show.

Fortunately for the singer, the feeling seems to be mutual. Following Selena's performance, Spears tweeted, "Wow @SelenaGomez ... 'Come & Get It' on the #mtvmovieawards was incredible! One of my favorite songs out there right now!" she wrote. "And thank you for all of the kind words about the VMA Slave performance ... you're too sweet! Means a lot to me."

During "MTV First," Gomez opened up about what it was like to realize that one of her idols was also a fan of her work.

"It was actually the second time that she tweeted me ... I died the first time," Gomez said. "I didn't believe it at first, but it was really sweet, because even with the inspirations through the outfits and the performances, she's a huge inspiration when it comes to performing."

The singers' ties don't stop there: Gomez, who said she would be "terrified" to talk to Spears, is now gaining comparisons to the pop star. At nearly 20 years old, Spears released her jaw-dropping video for "I'm a Slave 4 U," shedding her good-girl image for a more sexy look, which, also at the age of 20, is exactly what Gomez is doing with "Come & Get It."

"I think she's one of the best that made that transition," Gomez said. "That video ["Slave 4 U"] is so hot, it's incredible, so I love that, and I definitely wanted to do that with my transition, but I don't think there's a path you have to follow. I think you just have to figure it out and hope for the best, so if it has a similarity, that's only a compliment."
