Selena Gomez gets Victoria Beckham voice coach for film accent

The US actress seems to have taken the former Spice Girl’s nickname a bit too literally and toiled with a vocal expert to mimic her.

‘We wanted the accent to be almost very Victoria Beckham, kind of very posh and sophisticated,’ said Gomez, 18. ‘I had a coach for two weeks before the film, so I worked with her very closely and then we had her on set guiding me.’

In the film, Gomez plays a down-to-earth girl who masquerades as a spoilt British heiress while holidaying in Europe. Accents are not all the pair have in common, with Posh, 37, rumoured to have named her new daughter, Harper, after a character in Gomez’s TV show The Wizards Of Waverly Place – a favourite in the Beckham household.

Gomez, who was in London this month for the launch of Disney Channel HD, also worked with British funny woman Catherine Tate, 43, on the new movie.

Gomez said: ‘She was amazing, she was so funny. Off camera she was always making jokes and making everyone laugh.’

The actress and singer, who is dating US heart-throb Justin Bieber, 17, added: ‘I was trying hard to keep a straight face – she would try to make me laugh behind the cameras.’

As for a duet with Bieber, Gomez said: ‘Not any time soon.’

Selena Gomez: Upcoming Tour Will Be 'Like a PG-13 Rave'

Selena Gomez says a desire "to age me up without making me any different" is what drove "When the Sun Goes Down," the actress and singer's third album with her band, the Scene.

"I'm still the same person, but I am getting older," Gomez tells Billboard.com, "so I wanted to create a while different kind of fun sound when it came to the lyrics. The lyrics are a lot more cheeky on this album...and the music's really fun."

Gomez says the 12-song set, which was released last Tuesday (June 28), is also "more positive, which I haven't really done a lot of. 'Naturally' and 'Who Says,' which are my biggest songs, are both very positive, but most of my records are kind of intense break-up songs and a little bit repetitive with what I'm singing about. So I guess I'm really excited about the fact that most of (the album) is really uplifting songs about summer and being able to be present and happy with where you are and enjoying the moment. It's a really empowering record and that's just more of the place I was in, so I wanted it to be really powerful and to be something that was inspiring."

The 18-year-old Gomez says that she recorded the gold-certified "Who Says," which has become the end-credit theme for her new film, "Monte Carlo," well before she started work on "When the Sun Goes Down. "It's a very powerful anthem and it's something I can relate to and it's something everybody's gone through, so I'm glad that song's out there," Gomez explains. "Fox heard the song on the radio and thought it was the perfect kind of message for our movie. I'm just glad it happened that way." She and the Scene filmed the song's video in Hungary, where she was making Monte Carlo, and Gomez recorded some of her vocals during that project as well.

Gomez co-wrote two songs on the album -- "Bang Bang Bang" and the title track, the latter with the Scene's bass player Joey Clement. Britney Spears was part of the composing team on "Whiplash," while Katy Perry and Billy Steinberg share credits for "That's More Like It." Other collaborators include Toby Gad, Greg Kurstin, Emanuel "Eman" Kiriakou and Priscilla Renea. Boyfriend Justin Bieber is not on the album, but Gomez says he was "very supportive through all of the" filming and recording she was doing.

Gomez is also pleased of the package art, which portrays here in a variety of vintage looks -- 20s on the cover and other eras on the inside. "My first album is a picture of my face," Gomez says. "The second album is a picture of my face. This time we wanted it to be not just me in a pretty dress. We wanted it to be really different. So the cover of the album I'm wearing a black wig and it's back-shot. People don't even recognize it's me."

Gomez and the Scene hit the road to promote "When the Sun Goes Down" with a seven-week tour starting July 24, which Gomez promises will also be "very different" from her previous performances. "We're dividing it into four sections," Gomez says. "We're going to have wardrobe changes. There's going to be dancers -- I will not be dancing most of the time. They'll just be back there getting the crowd pumped up. We're going to have fun screens in the background. It's just gonna be a huge party. I wanted to make it like a PG-13 rave."

Gomez, who recently finished her run on the Disney Channel's "Wizards of Waverly Place," plans to start work on another film in the fall, after the tour ends.

Selena Gomez hopes to grow with her audience

Selena Gomez plays two contrasting roles in her new movie “Monte Carlo,” and during a recent visit to pump the frothy summer film, she left two decidedly different impressions about the actress behind those roles.

On the one hand, Gomez sounded fittingly humble for an 18-year-old who's trying to establish herself in the movies — maybe more modest about her place in the Hollywood firmament than you'd expect, given how huge a celebrity she is already among tween and young teens girls who've followed her rise as a Disney Channel star, oft-downloaded pop singer and girlfriend of megastar Justin Bieber.

On the other hand, there was the half-dozen handlers moving around the stately Four Seasons suite who fussed over her makeup (though she's a natural beauty who always appears to have just stepped out of a cosmetics ad), brought her coffee and a fruit plate, timed how long interviewers were allowed to talk to her and other major responsibilities impossible to ascertain.

It was unclear if these assistants were Gomez's entourage, studio-assigned keepers or maybe partly the crew of Bieber. But they made her appear a bit of a girl in a bubble.

To be fair, perhaps extra care was being taken because the actress had a week before been hospitalized in Los Angeles for what turned out to be dehydration and an iron deficiency. Gomez's mother, Mandy Teefey, told her to slow down and take better care of herself. And she was listening since Mom is also her manager.

Open, if businesslike, she indulged a few Q's with some thoughtful A's.

Q: Your recent health issues were plastered on blogs and in newspapers in parts of the globe that most folks have barely heard of. Do you feel you're living under a microscope sometimes?

A: I don't feel that. I do get incredible reactions from my fans (from) countries I've never been to. I guess I never view it as a bad, negative thing. I love what I do, so it's nice to have the fan reaction. The only thing I will say I don't like is, obviously, the microscope on my personal life. That obviously can be frustrating at times because I feel it's getting less and less about entertainment and art — not for me but for everybody.

Q: What was it about “Monte Carlo” that made you feel it was the right movie right now?

A: It's the right transition for me. Obviously, I'm at a crucial place in my career. I just left Disney Channel. Now I'm stepping into adult — young adult — world. But the whole reason I get to do what I do is the core audience that watches “Wizards of Waverly Place,” so I want to make projects that are satisfying for me artistically and something that my fans can go see.

Q: Do you feel as you continue to progress that you necessarily have to bring that audience along, or do you see yourself going for roles that will appeal to more mature viewers?

A: The problem with that is I'm not in that place personally. I will be 19 soon (July 22), so I'm at a very young place. I do feel I'm getting older, becoming an adult. At the same time, I'm still uncomfortable with certain things. At the moment, doing films like “Monte Carlo” is where I'm at personally. So I just hope to grow with my audience. I don't think there will ever be a turning point where I wouldn't want them to come see my movies.

Q: Was it a challenge playing the two roles (Grace, a small-town Texan who graduates from high school and takes her dream trip to Paris; and snooty British socialite Cordelia Winthrop Scott, whom Grace is mistaken for and then assumes her identity)?

A: It was fun, it was definitely a challenge. I got to be someone totally different. The Grace character, people have seen within the characters I've played before, so playing Cordelia was really fun because I got to create this evil person.

Q: Do you think you can keep the momentum in your music career while trying to build your name in the movies?

A: I make music more to have fun. I don't make anything that's serious for me. I love making music that makes people happy. ... But acting is something I work really hard at and throw myself into, and I really hope, professionally, that I can be recognized with respect. Which I know I'm going to have to gain because of my background
