Miley's not smiling after fan grabs her

SECURITY measures will be stepped up for Miley Cyrus's Sydney concert tonight after an over-eager fan embarrassed her minders by scrambling on stage and grabbing the Disney star during a Melbourne performance on Friday.

As she made her way through Sydney Airport ahead of the sell-out show yesterday evening, about 50 screaming teenage fans, some who had been waiting since 8am to see the US singer, were held at bay by Cyrus's security team.

Before she got off the plane, her fans were told that Cyrus had specifically requested she not be touched and that she would not be interacting with anyone. "If anyone touches her they will be escorted from the premises," a security guard told the crowd.

In video footage, the 18-year-old appeared visibly shaken when the admirer sneaked up behind her at Rod Laver Arena as she begun serenading the crowd with her hit song, The Climb.

A scuffle erupted as a security guard aggressively marched the female intruder off-stage before dramatically whisking the singer off stage.

"Oh my God," a stunned Cyrus said.

After the show, Cyrus partied with Australian boyfriend Liam Hemsworth at Melbourne night club Boutique until the early hours of yesterday morning.

Cyrus has spent the past week in Australia, beginning her Gypsy Heart Tour in Brisbane last Tuesday before heading to Melbourne.

Cyrus will play at Sydney's Acer Arena tonight and tomorrow before shows in Adelaide and Perth.

Miley Cyrus wows as pop star, but not as musician

Miley Cyrus, ahhh, Miley Cyrus...

Having been a fan of Hannah Montana when that was still Miley's thing, we admit to being a tad excited at the chance to see her perform live last June 17 at the SM Mall of Asia concert grounds.

In fact, as teen/tween role models go, she's pretty good.

She hasn't been to rehab yet, unlike other role models of female youth. She doesn't seem to sleep around too much, or at least has the good sense to employ effective spin doctors and have her public persona well in hand.

Judging by the number of little wannabes who were all taking a page right outta the Miley book of fashion last Friday, she seems to have a large segment of female youth eating out of her hand.

Would that her singing caught up to her look.

Don't get us wrong - we think she has a decent set of pipes. But really, more attention must be paid to good intonation. Her pitch was quite suspect for most of the night. Granted, even among the best musicians, no one ever sings perfectly in tune all night long, but still, Miley Cyrus is one of the highest earning teenagers on the planet. To whom much is paid, much should be expected.

To her credit, at least she sang sans lip-synched trickery. She was really singing. It wasn't a pre-recorded vocal, as has been increasingly common in other concerts. In fact, her spotty intonation was proof of her integrity.

Kudos for integrity. A waggled finger and a "tsk tsk" for the lack of attention to musical detail.

Perhaps as much time should have been spent on vocal performance as on visual image.

Yes, she was hot. Yes, visually she's the ideal nymphet. Her legs go on forever and her face is undeniably pretty in an American girl-next-door-to-Nashville sort of way. And yes, her show certainly had more than enough costume changes.

But really, aside from wanting to be in clean, dry clothes all night, what was the point of changing from one cleavage-revealing bra top into another?

Good intonation would have been more impressive.

Several songs were cool, though.

"Fly On The Wall" has long been something of a favorite. It's a cute little ditty. "Party In The USA" is catchy, infectious and was a crowd favorite. "The Climb" was stirring, and served as ostensible curtain closer.

The two encore numbers seemed to be throw-away sops to ticket purchasing parents of Miley dress-alikes, though. And the string of slower songs that spanned the last third of the show was tiring. Too many of the newer tunes were unremarkable, forgettable -- disposable pop formulae.

Any professional songwriter can write such songs in his/her sleep.

Having said that, however, we do like her new image as a rocker chick by way of Nashville. "I Love Rock & Roll" is a classic and will always be a crowd favorite. And her cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" seemed honest and heartfelt.

Also, kudos go to her back-up band and back-up singers. We're not sure if the back-up vocals were done live or were pre-recorded tracks, but the back-up singing was impeccable. They were in marked contrast to Miley's iffy intonation. Indeed, the flawless back-up vocals served to highlight the flaws in the lead vocalist's performance.

The band was very professional. The drummer, bassist & keyboardist played a gig any pro would have been proud to have played. The guitarist took the spotlight with several tasty, feral, pitch-perfect solos. Most memorable was his duo number with Miley -- she on skimpily clad vocals, he on acoustic guitar.

Still... at the risk of incurring the ire of ardent Miley-philes, we must come to an arguable conclusion: Miley Cyrus is really more of a manufactured pop star than she is a musician.

A musician is one who strives to sound consistently good, while a pop star is one who strives to always look her best.

Sorry, Hannah Montana... NOT the best of both worlds this time around.

Miley takes on Nirvana classic, shows her old school charm

It was an unlikely song choice to cover, particularly because the original was madly belted out by one of rock history’s most troubled geniuses. But Miley Cyrus, a heroine among today’s teens, turned her seemingly odd take on Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” the most interesting number during her concert at the MOA grounds June 17.

Yes, there was “The Climb” and “Forgiveness and Love” that provided the requisite positive vibe the crowd of mostly young girls needed on such a night. Yet her cover of the rock hit that propelled grunge music to mainstream acclaim turned the late Kurt Cobain into a rock god overnight for the teens in attendance.

Understandably, very few were slam-banging their heads while Miley was singing the song. Most in the audience were probably as young as that naked baby (Spencer Elden) pictured on the cover of “Nevermind” album (where “Teen Spirit” is culled from, along with other now-classics like “Come As You Are” and “Lithium”). Yet, the grown-up ’90s kids approved of Miley’s cover choice.

The 18-year-old Miley earned respect on that one, even if her version was not that exceptional. There on stage, Disney’s former “Hannah Montana” star was showcasing herself as an engaged listener of old school rock, appreciative of how past generations treated music and lyrics.

Earlier in the concert, she sang Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ “I Love Rock And Roll” which became a hit in the ’80s. “Rockers like Joan Jett made it possible for me,” she implied during the presscon just before her very first concert in Manila.

Watching Miley live (via Futuretainment production) was a way to re-evaluate her as an act. The way she handled and carried herself with class on stage proved she had all the right to grow up the way she wants to. So what if she bares her tummy most of the time? At least she’s not some malnourished-looking chick many celebrity girls her age are, overdoing thin and sexy. Her visual appeal seems to say she’s just who she is.

And that’s a fresh way to suit up for role-model-mode.

Credit goes to her for knowing how to reach out to fans. That she more than once went to the extreme right of the stage to go nearer the people in that area was big proof of that. The impact was spectacular, with her attracting standing and thrilled fans on that particular side like a magnet to iron filings.

“Everything starts with a dream,” she encouraged her Filipino fans whom she thanked many times for being there with her. She often said the word “amazing” to address the audience. For those chanting her name after her final song “The Climb,” en route to the expected encore numbers, that was how she delivered her act.

Some standout numbers were her performances of “Can’t Be Tamed,” “Stay,” “Cherry Bomb,” “My Heart Beats For Love” and her rendition of another ’90s super hit “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.”

Such is Miley’s charisma. One moment, she’s almost preachy, the next moment, she’d be sexy.

Grownup Miley Thrills & Moves Audience of Girl Tweens

It was one big girls-night-out at SM Mall of Asia on Friday, as teen pop superstar Miley Cyrus’ “Gypsy Heart Tour” made its sole Asian stop in Manila.

The Mall of Asia concert ground was literally a sea of teens in their four-inch heels, and eight-year-olds decked out in bright outfits being photographed by their equally stylish moms.

Seated in front of me were three bespectacled girls who didn’t look a day over 10. They had glittery guitars painted on their cheeks, and wore homemade shirts that said, “I’ve got the Cyrus virus!” They seemed the most pumped of all the kids that night, hoisting their posters and shouting “We want Miley!” every so often.

The trio had to hold in their excitement a little longer, though, as front acts Sam Concepcion and Elmo Magalona took the stage to set the night’s mood. While the kids were generally disinterested, their older counterparts rose to their feet and gushed over the local heartthrobs who sang, danced and rapped to Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never.”

Miley’s entrance was without theatrics or fancy stage work, her mere presence on stage was enough to make the crowd erupt into ear-splitting shrieks. Even the office people from a nearby building strained through their windows to catch a glimpse of the 18-year-old rock star.

Channeling a rocker chick vibe in her white embellished jacket and black leather hot pants, Miley kicked off the show with the bold beats of her female empowerment anthem, “Liberty Walk,” which saw her rapping some verses.

When her five-piece band followed up with the opening strains of “Party in the USA,” Miley took off her jacket revealing a racy studded bra. She darted across the stage–grinding and thrusting her hips whenever she sang the words “Moving my hips like yeah!” Needless to say, all the kids and teens were up jamming with their idol.

A few parents were visibly taken aback upon seeing Miley’s dance moves. Perhaps they were expecting to see the innocent Disney girl they used to watch on one of the world’s most successful teen franchises, “Hannah Montana.” But Miley had long shed her schmaltzy ‘tween image to explore her sexier, more mature side. And this concert, more than anything, showed just how much she had come into her own.

After giving the crowd a few more rock and dance-ready tunes like “Robot” and “Kicking and Screaming,” Miley slowed the show’s tenor with a restrained cover of Poison’s power rock ballad, “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” She sustained the somber mood with heartfelt performances of her own ballads, “Obsessed” and “Forgiveness and Love.”

She then tackled one crowdpleaser after another in her set, which included her 2008 pop rock single “7 Things,” “Fly on the Wall,” “Scars,” and “Two More Lonely People.”

Aside from her original songs, Miley also paid homage to some of her idols in the music biz. She did a fair rendition of Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ’n Roll,” “Cherry Bomb” and “Bad Reputation,” but lacked sufficient edge to give justice to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” She redeemed herself when she reverted to her country roots with a nuanced performance of Stevie Nick’s “Landslide.”

Miley’s performance on “Can’t Be Tamed” proved to be a visual spectacle with a flurry of colored lights and topnotch dancing from her backups. With the controversial music video being displayed on the giant LCD screen, Miley, who had changed into a purple outfit with matching walking stick, displayed her exceptional command of the stage as she worked the crowd to raucous cheers.

Miley’s singing voice has received significant flak over the years for being nasal and fragile. But during her performance of “The Climb” from “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” she showed her mettle, hitting all the inspirational ballad’s challenging passages and high notes. Even more commendable was that she managed to do this at the end of her set that lasted more than one and a half hours.

To shouts of “more, more,” Miley returned in a red-hot costume and sang three more songs—
See You Again,” “My Heart Beats For Love” and “Who Owns My Heart.”

Earlier, Miley thanked the crowd for their amazing support, telling them: “I hope you guys will walk away inspired to do whatever you guys want to do in your life. Everything starts with a dream.”

Miley Cyrus fresh a day before her Manila concert

The first thing Miley Cyrus tweeted about Manila when she got here was how the time zones are whacking her out.

Yet, she appeared fresh and excited when she entered a fully-packed room filled with members of the press at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Makati City. She wore a brown vest over a white sleeveless top, faux leather shorts, and high-heeled espadrilles. Her accessories were kept at minimum with a few simple rings and a long necklace with beads. Her curly, dirty blonde hair stretched past her chest.

“The fans have been amazing. I’ve been on this show (this morning) and they’re all super stoked. They had signs. It’s just great when you see people excited. I guess it helps when it’s your first time here,” she said when asked what her thoughts are about Manila.

Miley will perform live at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds Friday night (June 17) as part of her Gypsy Heart World Tour. Manila is her only stop in Asia before she continues the tour in Australia. A source from the Future Entertainment Inc. said that they were expecting at least 30,000 people to attend the concert.

She talked about her recent tour in South America when asked how it feels to perform in a crowd who spoke a different language.

“I think it’s really amazing. I think it’s more of a spiritual connection when you see people cry, you see people laugh (because of your songs). It’s all right if we don’t speak the same language because my music works that out for us.”

Sam Concepcion, Elmo to be front act for Miley Cyrus

Two of the most popular teen stars from rival networks will be the front act for Miley Cyrus' upcoming concert on June 17 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.

Sam Concepcion and Elmo Magalona will be sharing the stage with one of today's most popular teen queens as they vie for her attention with their singing and dancing, as well as showering her with a beautiful bouquet of flowers -- something Cyrus is reportedly very fond of.

Concepcion plans to buy Cyrus the most expensive bouquet he could find, while Magalona only wishes that she picks both of them.

Magalona, the heir to his singer-rapper father Francis Magalona's throne, told reporters it will be his first time to open a concert, and for an international star no less.

"I just hope the fans remember the night for a long time. Being on the same stage as her (Miley) is already enough. Fulfilled na kami dun," he said.

Both said their favorite song of Cyrus is "The Climb," deeming it inspiring as it speaks of her journey toward receiving worldwide fame.

"'The Climb' is one of the best songs that she has made -- the way it has made its mark on her fans and how it has inspired people," said Concepcion.

Magalona and Concepcion vowed to give their best performances to "show her how great Filipinos are."

Miley Cyrus commemorates her trip to Brazil by picking up a sixth tattoo

She has told fans that she has fallen in love with Brazil.

So it is understandable that Miley Cyrus would want to take a souvenir of her visit home with her.

The singer chose the most permanent of mementos, though, by having a new tattoo- her sixth - done before leaving the country.

Miley posed for photographs with Brazilian tattoo artist Fabio Sattori after he created a new etching on her right wrist.

The 18-year-old also watched as her friends had their own tattoos and body piercings done.

The former Hannah Montana star has been taking time out in Rio de Janeiro with her large entourage of family and friends for the past week, before resuming her Gypsy Heart tour in Bogota on Thursday.

She tweeted: I never want Gypsy <3 to end. I would LOVE more than anything to continue travelling. The world gets more beautiful everyday. 'Brazil has inspired me to add one more song to my set. I think you guys are gonna be very happy about the new addition.'

It is so far unclear what her new tattoo is, but it joins Miley's already vast collection of symbols and words.

Her first tattoo - the words 'Just Breathe' on the left side of her chest - caused controversy as Miley was under age when it was done.

US law prohibits tattoos on those under 18, but when the 17-year-old star wanted to get the tattoo aged 17 in 2009 her parents signed a consent form.

Other inkings soon followed. Miley has an outline of a love heart on her pinky and a cross on the inside of her ring finger, both on her right hand.

The Party In The USA singer also has the word 'LOVE' on the inside of her ear, as well as her largest - a dream catcher on the right side of her ribcage, which she acquired earlier this year.

This week a leaked photograph of the singer getting her dream catcher tattoo done leaked online.

The photograph shows a topless Miley lying down and clutching a shirt to her chest to cover her modesty.

Miley will also play dates in San Jose, Mexico City and Manila before finishing her tour up in Australia in June.

MILEY CYRUS WOULDN'T FEEL "COMFORTABLE" TOURING AMERICA

Miley Cyrus has no plans to tour her native U.S. because she is convinced American fans don’t want to see her in concert and she wouldn’t feel “comfortable” playing to indifferent crowds.

Cyrus is set to head out on her mammoth Gypsy Heart world tour in the summer, taking in South America and Australia, but she hasn’t scheduled any dates in North America.

Cyrus has now admitted she is unsure about fans in her native country and fears they might not want to see her live shows.

She tells the Associated Press, “I just think right now America has gotten to a place where I don’t know if they want me to tour or not. Right now I just want to go to the places where I am getting the most love and Australia and South America have done that for me. Kind of going to the places where I get the most love.
