Bieber Doc 'Believe' Bombs, Most Fans a No Show

How Justin Bieber's fortunes have fallen at the box office.

The performer's second concert documentary Believe is turning in a dismal performance at the Christmas box office, where it has earned only $3.1 million in its first three days. On Friday, it fell below $1 million to $790,000 for a 14th place finish.

Believe is now only expected to take in $4.5 million over the course of its five-day debut (Wednesday through Sunday), including a meek weekend haul of $2.2 million. Granted, the movie is said to have cost only $5 million to make, but Believe will do only a fraction of the business that Bieber's Never Say Never enjoyed in February 2011.

Never Say Never, opening to $29.5 million in North America, posted a lifetime domestic gross of $73 million, making it the most successful concert film of all time domestically. Most box office observers say Believe may only hit $10 million.

Believe is badly trailing similar concert documentaries. In August, One Direction: This Is Us debuted to $15.8 million on its way to earning $28.9 million (even that was considered something of a disappointment).

Open Road Films, which is releasing Believe in North America, points out that the movie is playing on only 1,037 screens, compared to 3,100 for Never Say Never, which was distributed and marketed by Paramount.

Nevertheless, other concert docs which have likewise opened on fewer screens than a usual release (2,500-plus screens) have done far more business.

Disney's Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour opened on 683 screens in early February 2008, grossing $31.1 million. Exactly a year later, Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience rolled out on 1,271 screens, grossing $12.5 million in its debut.

Believe, reteaming Bieber with his Never Say Never director John M. Chu, has supplanted Katy Perry: Part of Me as the worst opener among the recent slate of concert documentaries featuring young pop artists. Perry's film debuted to a meek $7.1 million from 2,730 screens in summer 2012.

Box office observers questioned whether some mothers kept their younger tweens away from Part of Me, and they are wondering the same thing in regards to Believe. When Never Say Never was released, Bieber still had a squeaky clean image. His antics since -- including tweeting on Christmas Eve that he was retiring -- have made headlines around the world (the tweet was promptly removed).

Open Road says Believe will be profitable for all involved, considering its modest $5 million budget. Open Road also spent only $5 million to market the film, far less than is usually spent on a nationwide release, saying it focused exclusively on Bieber's fanbase.

"It's a new model. We wanted to go straight to Justin's fans" said Open Road marketing chief Jason Cassidy. "Financially, we are going to be fine."

Still, there's no denying that many of Bieber's fans are staying away. Rivals question why Open Road -- owned by giant exhibitors Regal and AMC -- decided to open Believe on Christmas, the most crowded time of the year.

Jon Chu Admits Justin Bieber's 'Believe' Movie Wasn't Supposed to Happen

If you were too busy yesterday to catch Justin Bieber's new movie Believe, then now is your time to go check it out. Not only were we at the movie's premiere in Los Angeles last week but we also talked to the movie's director Jon Chu and he had a lot to say about Mr. Bieber and his second movie starring the singer.

During a really chill phone interview, Jon told us that Believe actually wasn't supposed to happen for a few years.

"The movie naturally happened. I didn't think we'd have another film for a few years but because he evolved and went through so much last year the movie grew with him," he said.

During the time of the movie's taping, the Biebs was splitting from Selena Gomez and getting into arguments and fights with everyone. Jon admitted he basically wanted to catch all of that but from Justin's perspective. He wanted everyone to see how real Justin is and the things he's going through. He also told us that the movie never really had a definite end. He just went with things which he said was pretty difficult.

After we saw the film, we noticed Believe is very much a documentary more than Never Say Never. While there's still awesome concert and Belieber coverage, it gives us a different view and allows us as fans to see Justin's side of the story.

Did you check out Bieber's new movie yet? It finally hit theaters yesterday!

Being Justin Bieber: 'Believe' focuses on highs, lows

The opening sequence of Believe, director Jon M. Chu's latest cinematic chapter in the life of pop phenom Justin Bieber, in theaters Christmas Day, finds the contemplative musical prodigy composing at the keyboard.

That image is as striking — tattoos lace Bieber's long arms, while a hint of a mustache graces his upper lip — as its message is unmistakable. The kid from the YouTube videos may be growing up, warts and all, in full public view, but in the end it's all about the music — despite that recent joke about retiring.

"I'm going to take my time (next year) to really find my sound as an adult," says Bieber, 19, in an e-mail to USA TODAY from the Philippines, the final stop of his 15-month Believe tour. "That takes time and patience, and I'm grateful I have the ability to step back and focus on my creativity."

Adds his manager and friend, Scooter Braun: "Next year will be less about the career. I expect Justin to be doing things like snowboarding, backpacking, working on his charities, but more often than not, he'll be in the studio. Music is his therapy."

Besides finding a new sound, the byproduct of such self-imposed seclusion would be a break from the ravaging claws of the fame monster. There was little that Bieber did since his tour began that escaped public scrutiny and, frequently, criticism.

Perhaps his first show was a harbinger: He threw up on stage from bad milk. In ensuing months, he mooned fans on Instagram after splitting up with Selena Gomez, nearly got into a fistfight with a British paparazzo after the photographer cursed at Bieber, and relieved himself in a restaurant mop bucket in New York. Among other things.

Chu and his cameras stuck close to Bieber throughout the highs and lows of the tour, and the result is a mix of concert footage and backstage reflections from one of the world's most famous young stars. While there are no pointed apologies for specific actions, there is Bieber's almost stunned reaction to Chu's direct question whether he is destined to become a pop-culture train wreck.

"I'm not going to be stupid enough for that to happen," says Bieber.

When asked how his mother, Pattie Mallette, might view some of his antics, Bieber is frank: "She doesn't agree with some decisions I make, like all moms."

Bieber has "certainly taken some hits recently, so they're smart to put out a movie that reminds people that he's a drummer, a singer, a dancer and a songwriter," says Ian Drew, entertainment director for Us Weekly. "Their message is he's not some singing puppet. The problem is that a rough year image-wise has overshadowed some good music."

Chu, who also directed the Believe concert tour, says that while the precocious teen barely knew him on his first Bieber project, the movie Never Say Never, this time around there was a new comfort level between them.

"The fact that I could ask him if he thought he'd turn into a train wreck says a lot about him," says Chu, who agreed to direct the movie in between G.I. Joe projects and sees this as the second film in a possible trilogy of Bieber concert documentaries. "As much as he's in a bubble, I think he has perspective."

Chu says that whenever he'd read about the latest Bieber faux pas — which included being charged with spraying graffiti in Brazil and stepping on a flag thrown onstage in Argentina — he'd "ask and quickly find a lot of it wasn't true, often Justin wasn't where people claimed he was."

Ultimately, Chu says the subject of his film is "neither as crazy nor as innocent as he might let on to be. He's not perfect, but as a society it's clear we like to tear people down."

Braun says he and his camp got to the point where they just "stopped defending the accusations because there's only so many times you can say, 'That didn't happen.' You have to know your truth. People say, 'Oh, he's falling apart.' Well, he hasn't missed a show in 156 shows."

Justin Bieber Bans Paternal Grandparents From Believe Movie Premiere?

Justin Bieber’s Believe movie premiere seemed to be a great experience for his maternal grandparents, but apparently it wasn’t so great for his paternal grandparents who might not have even been invited.

According to Radar Online, Justin Bieber did not invite his paternal grandparents to his Believe movie Premiere on Wednesday.

When asked by a representative from the website if he was invited to the Los Angeles event, Justin’s grandfather replied, “I really don’t want to talk about it.”

t’s no surprise that Justin’s grandfather George Bieber did not appear at the event, as he has publicly criticized Justin’s behavior in the past. This may be the cause for tension between him and his grandson.

George Bieber told the New York Daily News in April that Justin rarely communicates with him or gives him and his wife Kathy Bieber any money.

“It’s like we now live on different planets,” he revealed in April. “He never calls us, and now I sometimes think he doesn’t care. It does make me sad, as right now our lives are pretty desperate. I can’t work due to illness, so there is barely any money coming into the house. For them, nothing seems to be too much trouble, and he buys them new houses, cars, luxury holidays, anything they want — but for us, nothing.”

Justin’s new movie Believe will hit theaters on Christmas day.

Justin Bieber Surprised Children With Gifts During A Screening Of 'Believe'

Justin Bieber has managed to get a lot of bad press this year, but it looks like he's aiming for a new year's turnaround. The pop star interrupted the Boys and Girls Club screening of his new movie, "Believe," on Dec. 16 to bring presents to the underprivileged children.

Bieber welcomed every child in the audience onto the stage and greeted each with a hug and a toy. The singer related to the audience as he served as an early Santa Claus, reportedly saying, "I remember growing up with not a lot. [I] grew up with, you know, no toys and I wanna make sure each and every one of you has a great Christmas." He also sang for the excited fans, including a Christmas song in his brief set list.

Bieber's friend, Ryan Butler, posted a photo of the event on his Instagram account and called the day "heartwarming."

The 19–year–old then sat down and watched the rest of the movie with his new friends. A tweet posted to his account explained to the world how grateful Bieber was to be able to give back.

Surprised my beliebers at a screening of #believemovie & gave toys with the crew. Watching the movie with them. This is what it's all about— Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) December 17, 2013

Bieber has been especially attentive to philanthropic endeavors this year. Reportedly, he has raised over $1 million for relief in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.

Paul Walker's Daughter, Meadow, Attends Justin Bieber's Believe Movie Premiere

Meadow Walker has stepped out publicly for the first time since the untimely death of her father, Paul Walker.

Sources confirm to E! News that she was among the guests who attended tonight's premiere of the documentary Justin Bieber's Believe in downtown Los Angeles. The teen arrived in one of the caravan of vehicles that ferried Bieber and his entourage to the event, but she did not walk the red carpet.

She and Bieber apparently met at one of his concerts. A photo of the pair that showed up online looks to have been taken during a backstage meet-and-greet.

Kylie Jenner, Jaden Smith, Usher, Christopher Meloni, Casper Smart and Harry Shum were among the guests in attendance.

Believe is the second docu-film directed by Jon M. Chu about the Bieber's rise to fame. The movie features interviews with the singer, his manager Scooter Braun, Usher, Mike Posner, Will.i.am, Kenny Hamilton and Rodney Jerkins.

Not only does Believe show Bieber backstage during his worldwide tour, but he also speaks candidly about falling in love and breaking up, the paparazzi and his attempt to grow a mustache.

Guests of the premiere were also asked to bring new and unwrapped toys to be handed out to underprivileged children by Radio Disney and ABC7's Spark of Love.
