Justin Bieber puts on a tough front as he poses with a paintball gun in Instagram snaps

He's gone to ever greater lengths to establish a new edgy persona - with graffiti stunts, tattoos, and skatepark antics.

And on Tuesday Justin Bieber seemed especially proud of his latest venture as he posted snaps from a paintball range while toting an air-powered gun.

The 20-year-old captioned one of the pictures 'Kill or be killed' as he brandished the paintball shooter while suited up for a day of war games.

The pop star was certain to protect himself in a large oversize shirt, gloves, padded trousers and a face mask with goggles.

In one particular shot he poses with his airsoft gun while seated at a table, with the caption: 'Kill or be killed #easymoneysniper @theworldshero'.

And in another he poses on the battlefield, writing gratefully: 'Thank you guys for setting up paintballing, be back soon'.

Meanwhile, the Baby singer has been logging in the hours at the gym to transform his naturally scrawny frame into a specimen of muscular strength.

And on Sunday Bieber was clearly proud of all his hard work as he posted a self-congratulatory snap to Instagram of one of his workouts at a fitness centre.

He performed a leg lift while positioned on a dip bar with the caption: '#ogr what a solid core . Lol #stayfit #dontbescared @thepatricknilsson'.

His trainer recently opened up about the star's transformation.

‘I can’t keep him out of the gym,’ Patrick told In Touch of Bieber, who used to never lift weights and wasn’t ‘really eating much’.

Now, Patrick says, ‘There are periods where he wants to work out seven days a week.’

Patrick is currently on tour with Justin, whose body he transformed over the course of a year.

‘I’d been training with him for a while, but it wasn’t until last November that he was really pushing to get bigger and got motivated to work out harder.’

He added: ‘He said to me one day, “Man, I never want to be skinny again.” '
