Ellen Page has come out as gay.
The Juno star revealed the news at the Time to Thrive conference in Las Vegas Friday during an emotional speech, according to CNN.
"I'm here today because I am gay. And because...maybe I can make a difference," Page told a crowd at the event, which promotes issues of the gay community.
"I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission," she continued. "I suffered for years, because I was scared to be out."
The 26-year-old actress went on to call NFL prospect Michael Sam a "hero." The University of Missouri footballer recently revealed he is gay-an announcement that could make him the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL.
"We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame and without compromise," she continued.
Following the event, Ellen tweeted, "Thank you @HRC and everyone for all the love and support."
