Lorde was spotted at One Direction's concert in New Zealand over the weekend and it may have come as a surprise to some following allegations that the chart-topping singer dissed the boyband in a recent interview, describing them as “overrated.”
The 16-year-old singer, who scored her first number one single on the US Billboard charts this month with her debut 'Royals,' was spotted in the middle of the large audience at the first of their two shows at the Vector Arena in Auckland on Saturday, and appeared to be enjoying herself despite admitting that she may have been the odd one out in the sea of hysterical young fans.
“The weirdest lil goth at the one direction concert is meeeee,” Lorde tweeted before adding: “This is the most enthusiastic audience i have ever witnessed.”
Lorde's appearance comes just as the outspoken singer was accused of slamming the boy band in a recent interview, apparently claiming their global super stardom is undeserved.
“One Direction are pretty overrated and their music isn’t really good I find it odd they’re famous,” Lorde is quoted as saying although the comments are yet to be attributed to a source.
The quotes prompted a barrage of nasty Twitter messages to Lorde on Twitter, with @hurrayniall writing: “Lorde why are u even saying one direction isnt talented and they're overrated who even are u.” @stylesagram also hit back, writing: “JUST WHEN I STARTED TO LIKE LORDE SHE COMPLETELY DISSES ONE DIRECTION.”
While she may not have slammed One Direction, Lorde hasn't exactly held back in the past with Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber just some of her famous targets. However, Lorde recently said she will stick by her opinions no matter how controversial.
“I think there's a funny culture in music that's only happened over the last 15 years, that if you have an opinion about something in music that isn't 100-percent good, you're a 'hater,' even if you have perfectly reasonable grounds for that critique,” Lorde told MTV News on the reaction she often gets for being opinionated.
She added: “I have pretty strong morals and opinions being in pop music, and I can't help but express those, which I think people appreciate. I mean, I don't think I say anything that isn't backed up. Most of the time I will stand by things that I've said.”
