Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson in Twitter war with Piers Morgan over David Beckham

The One Direction boys found themselves in a Twitter war with Piers Morgan yesterday after the former Britain's Got Talent judge slammed David Beckham.

The argument began when Piers claimed that David, 37, is 'past it' and should 'retire gracefully' from football rather than change teams when he leaves US soccer team LA Galaxy next week.

Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne hit back at Piers, 47, by calling Becks their 'hero' - but he responded with: 'Is that because he always runs in one direction?'

The 1D boys managed to get #PiersMorganIsSmelly trending worldwide before he got his own back by posting a link to embarrassing photos of the trio as youngsters.

'My Twitter feed is erupting like a volcano, and rather like @Harry_Styles @Real_Liam_Payne @Louis_Tomlinson - it ain't pretty,' Tweeted Piers.

Louis, 20, replied: 'we'd find your old school photos but camera's didn't exist in your day ...'

Niall Horan later joined the feud while Harry, 18, managed to get celebrity support from James Corden and Dragons' Den's Peter Jones.

But Piers wasn't impressed when Harry asked mentor Simon Cowell if he could get the 'nasty' CNN host to leave them alone.

'Hahaha - grow a pair, Styles,' Tweeted Piers.
