Emma Watson Earns MTV Trailblazer Award: The Perks Of Being A Pioneer!

There must be something magical about Emmas. A year after Emma Stone received the first-ever MTV Trailblazer Award, 22-year-old "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" actress Emma Watson will follow suit at this year's MTV Movie Awards, airing live on Sunday, April 14 at 9 p.m. ET.

The Trailblazer Award honors best-in-class young actors who are actively carving out their own unique and diverse path in the film industry.

Watson first cast her spell on audiences at the tender age of 11 years old, playing precocious wizard Hermione Granger in "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Seven sequels later, the actress graduated from Hogwarts and conjured increasingly mature roles in films like "My Week With Marilyn" and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." The latter, in which Watson played high school senior Sam, earned her three Movie Awards nominations this year: Best Female Performance, Best Kiss (with co-star Logan Lerman) and Best Musical Moment (with Lerman and Ezra Miller).

To celebrate Emma Watson's MTV Trailblazer Award, we've rounded up her most 'trailblazing' outfits!

Watson can next be seen in Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" and Darren Aronofsky's "Noah," co-starring Lerman.

In the meantime, Watson will accept her Trailblazer Award at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, starring "Pitch Perfect" actress Rebel Wilson as host. Also being recognized at this year's ceremony is Will Ferrell, who will receive the first-ever Comedic Genius Award in celebration of his contributions to the world of comedy.

It all goes down on Sunday, April 14, live from the Sony Pictures Studios Lot in Culver City, California.

TOP PICK: Independent Spirit Awards Winners List 2013

The best in independent filmmaking were the spotlight of the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards at Santa Monica Beach on Saturday (February 23) in Santa Monica, Calif.

The big winner of the night was Silver Linings Playbook, which picked up the awards for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Female Lead for Jennifer Lawrence.

John Hawkes picked up the award for Best Male Lead for his work in the film The Sessions while his co-star Helen Hunt was chosen as the Best Supporting Female. Matthew McConaughey won the award for Best Supporting Male for his work in Magic Mike.

'Perks of Being a Wallflower': How the cast bonded during the 'best summer ever'

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a high-school movie, capturing the trials and tribulations of adolescents trying to find their place in the world, but for the actors in Perks, the set felt a lot more like college.

“We were kind of living in a dorm environment,” star Logan Lerman said of the nights in the hotel during production with Emma Watson, Ezra Miller, and other castmates.

A featurette on Perks’ DVD and Blu-ray (available today) called “Best Summer Ever” puts a spotlight on the bonding the young cast did in that dorm-like environment. Check out an EW exclusive clip from the featurette below, then read on for what Lerman had to say about shooting Perks and his next project with Watson, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: It’s very rare for an author to not only adapt his own book but direct it. What was it like working with Stephen Chbosky on set?
LOGAN LERMAN: It was great. He was a great asset to have around. He was a cheat sheet for the whole story. Anytime I had a question, he was the go-to guy. I loved working with him. It was the most passionate set I’ve been on. There was a vibe, a fuel there. He really made everybody feel like it was their film, when at the end of the day, it was really his.

There’s a scene toward the beginning of the film when “Come On Eileen” plays at the dance, and Charlie dances his way up to Patrick and Sam. What was that like to shoot?
Oh, it was a lot of fun. That was a few days there when we were trying to knock out all the scenes at that location. Most of the time was going into perfecting the dance that Em and Ezra did, kind of coordinated thing that they made up. That took a lot of time. And then it was, “Alright. I’m just gonna wing it and give them some options.” So I gave them some options. It was just fun cause I got to just f— around on set, just dance.

So Emma and Ezra’s dance was highly choreographed, and you just kind of threw it out there?
Yeah, I didn’t really want to show them what I was going to do. So there was a lot of crappy takes, a lot of ridiculous stuff. I don’t know what the hell I was doing, and Charlie didn’t either, so it worked well.

Was the song playing on set?
Yes, it was. After a while, that song got a little irritating. After like the 70th time of playing it.

So it’s not a song you want to be listening to anytime soon.

You know what’s funny is I’ve heard it over 100 times, I’d say, and I still don’t know the lyrics. I just know “come on Eileen,” and everything else I have no idea.
The cast has talked a lot about how quickly all of you bonded. Was there any moment you realized it was going to work, that you were all going to get along well?
Yes. We all basically lived together, and we’d be hanging out all the time. Every second of every day we were pretty much together. We’d come back to our hotel rooms at the end of the day, hang out. We looked at each other and said, “We have no idea what this movie’s going to be. It could be terrible. It could be good.” You never know. But regardless, it’ll always be really special for us ’cause we had so many good times making it and became tight friends during that process. But fortunately, we all saw the film and were like, “Oh, hey, it worked out. It’s pretty good.”

You made another film with Emma, Noah.
Yeah, it’s a first for me. It’s pretty rare that that happens, working with someone so close to the last film we did. We’ve been in tight quarters for a little while.
In Perks, Emma has an American accent.

We had the role reversal on Noah.

How did that dynamic work? Did you help her out on Perks, then she helped you out on Noah?
I wouldn’t really call it British that I had to do [for Noah]. “Mid-Atlantic” is what they call it. I don’t know what the heck it is. On the set for Perks, she was a little nervous about it, but she did a great job, and she worked really hard. We were all there for her, the whole cast. Anytime she had a question she’d usually come over to me — “How does that sound?” We’d let her know. It was a good little team.

Noah is radically different from Perks. Was there anything was similar about the two sets?
Oh, hell no. The vibes were completely different. But it was nice to have that familiarity of a friend because it was a pretty intimidating set. It was much more intimidating than stepping onto Perks.

What are you working on next?
I’m looking at things right now just trying to find it. I just finished Noah, just looking for the next thing I’m passionate about. But it’s nice to have a few weeks off.

Logan Lerman talks differences between The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and Noah

There is no denying that Logan Lerman is one of the most talented young actors around at the moment and he has been keeping himself busy, with a number of impressive movies. Logan was recently seen in the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, has filmed the sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and will appear in Noah, and he has been talking about the differences between working on three such different movies.

Lerman was talking to ComingSoon, when he explained, “Oh, very difficult, yeah, very, very difficult. I mean, actually not difficult, because it wasn't really difficult, but it was interesting to go back into that world. They're just so different, so, so different. All three of them are just completely unique challenges, and yeah, I guess the variety is what makes it fun.”

While we have already cast our eyes on The Perks of Being a Wallflower, we will get to see Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, when it is released on August 14 in the UK and August 16 in the US. The we will see Logan Lerman, again starring alongside Emma Watson, in Noah, which will be released on March 28 in both the US and the UK.

Breast actress: Emma Watson shows shy student the gropes

HERE’S a perk of being Emma Watson’s co-star.

The actress stripped down to her undies for a movie scene in which actor Logan Lerman gropes the Brit star’s brassiered boob.

She buries memories of her Harry Potter past in her coming-of-age role in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, out next Monday on DVD.

Emma can be seen standing in her smalls as she gives Logan’s character a taste of intimacy, planting his hand on her breast.

The film stars Logan as a shy college freshman who’s taken under the wing of two seniors – Emma and Ezra Miller.

It’s based on a book of the same name by Stephen Chbosky.


More senior roles are in the pipeline for Emma – next up she’s appearing alongside Leslie Mann in crime caper The Bling Ring, from Lost In Translation director Sofia Coppola.

She also teams up with contemporary comedy favourites Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel and Paul Rudd in This Is The End.

Another future release sees her starring alongside Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins in Noah, a biblical epic based on the titular character’s visions of an apocalyptic flood.

Emma Watson 'Perks' Up Our Top 50 Movie Characters Of 2012

We're more than halfway through the MTV Movies team's countdown of the Top 50 Movie Characters of 2012, which can only mean one thing: it's time to bust out Earth's mightiest heroes. But it's not an actual Avenger on today's list of spots 30 through 21; it's one of the team's supporting players, a brave soul who gave his life in service of saving the world.

It's not just action heroism we're saluting on today's list. We're also celebrating an infinite high school senior, a love-struck Khaki scout, and one of the greatest leaders in American history. Those are just some of the highlights from today's round-up, but stay with us all week long as we count down to our favorite film character of 2012!

30. Haymitch Abernathy ("The Hunger Games")
As the "Hunger Games" resident alcoholic war vet, Haymitch is crucial for the hero Katniss to evolve. More than just a mentor, Haymitch is the mirror that not only reflects Katniss' own strengths and weaknesses back to her but also shows her the person that she could potentially become if Panem continues to be ruled by the Hunger Games. Haymitch isn't just Katniss' ghost of Christmas future — he also offers some of the best and much needed moments of levity and humor in the dark dystopic film. I also like to think that Woody Harrelson reanimated glimmers of Roy Munson from "Kingpin" for the role as well. — Joel Hanek

29. Fantine ("Les Miserables")
Anne Hathaway, you had one hell of a year. You thoroughly kicked our asses as Selina Kyle in "The Dark Knight Rises," and you absolutely broke our hearts as ill-fated Fantine. Her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream," presented in one take, stands out as one of the most emotionally raw moments captured on film all year long. For that reason alone, Hathaway is destined for Oscar glory in just a few months. For right now, it's a deeply moving performance that guarantees her place as one of our 50 favorite characters of the year. Oh, let's sing a song for Shakusky -- philosopher-poet, hopeless romantic, and the greatest Khaki Scout the island of New Penzance has ever known. Let us sing the praises of an outcast whose foster-kid upbringing has not crushed his soul but given rise to a boy with boundless creativity and the certainty that he's got to make his own way in the world because adults sure aren't going to help him. So let us celebrate Shakusky as he flees Camp Ivanhoe for a madcap adventure with his true love and fellow old soul, Suzy. Wes Anderson's film might be a flight of fairytale nostalgia, but in heroic Sam Shakusky the co-writer/director has given anyone who's ever felt alone and heartsick yet hopeful something we can recognize: ourselves. — Eric Ditzian

Daniel Day-Lewis' complete embodiment of the 16th commander-in-chief earns a spot on our list for introducing us to an actual person, a flesh-and-blood Lincoln, likeable and totally unlike any portrayal we had seen before. Day-Lewis helped us to see the man behind the icon, and in a way, he became even more legendary because of it. — Kevin P. Sullivan

26. Hushpuppy ("Beasts of the Southern Wild")
Though she probably now lives in a tear-soaked part of your memory, Hushpuppy once lived in The Bathtub with her daddy and made us all remember what it was like to be a child, facing the monsters of the real world again. Played with fearless earnestness by Quvenzhané Wallis, the heroine of this year's indie darling won over crowds last January at Sundance and has only gained recognition and praise since then. 25. Bilbo Baggins ("The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey")
"In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit." It's a simple introduction, but one tiny character that sets off an epic adventure that sparks many more and eventually two film trilogies. Bilbo does not begin as the most likely of heroes, but the first part of his quest in "An Unexpected Journey" proves that there is a lot more to him than his dwarvish companions thought. 24. Queen Ravenna ("Snow White and the Huntsman")
Fairy Tale Land's very own Real Housewife, evil Queen Ravenna's singular desire is to be forever the fairest of them all. Indeed, she'll stop at nothing to attain perpetual youth — including sucking it straight from the gut of her kingdom's unwitting maidens. She doesn't take too kindly, then, to Snow White's scheme to unseat her (and, by extension, stanch the supply of nubile talent). As the maniacal monarch, actress Charlize Theron chews the scenery like it's a big ol' pack of Juicy Fruit — and we loved every over-the-top minute. — Amy Wilkinson

23. Joe ("Looper")
It's often that the hero is also the villain of his own story — it's just never been done quite so literally as with Joe from "Looper," with the younger version of the character played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the older by Bruce Willis. Willis' calloused and experienced Joe plays perfect counter-point to JGL's cocky yet naïve Joe — making arrogance, self-loathing, and revenge the perfect cocktail for their adversarial relationship. Both versions of Joe are as empathetic as jaded sociopaths can be, but the mastery of "Looper" is that you're not sure who you're rooting for or against. — Joel Hanek

22. Sam, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower"
In a nutshell, Sam (played by Emma Watson) is everything you want in a high school movie love interest or crush. She is classically pretty, smart, sassy yet sensitive, realistically flawed. There's also a quirkiness and element of mystery about her, which makes her irresistible to our titular "Wallflower" Charlie and the audience, particularly as we're further put under the spell of Emma Watson's acting charm and chops. — Kara Warner

21. Agent Phil Coulson ("Marvel's The Avengers")
He's not the hero we deserve, but he's the hero we need. No, we're not talking about Batman, or even someone like Iron Man, for that matter. Frankly, Agent Coulson doesn't need an elaborate suit of armor or crazy lightning powers to rank as one of the greatest movie heroes of the year. All he needs is his stoic sense of humor, his even-handed judgment, his eye-on-the-prize determination, and a sense of duty that would lead him to give up his life for the greater good. Coulson became a fan-favorite character over the course of multiple Marvel movie appearances, but it was his final send-off in "Avengers" that cemented his eternal place in our hearts — and on this list. Teen Actor Logan Lerman Discovers ‘The Perks Of Being A Wallflower’

urrently in theaters and finally gaining a little awards consideration attention, THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER is STEPHEN CHBOSKY’S own big-screen adaptation of his best selling young adult novel of the same name and follows the adolescent coming-of-age of a 15-year-old high schooler trying to cope with first love, loss and mental illness. Directed by CHBOSKY as well, the film features the captivating and completely committed performances of leads LOGAN LERMAN, EMMA WATSON and EZRA MILLER. First-time director, CHBOSKY is to be congratulated not just for a great adaptation of his own book but also for the perfect ensemble cast he’s put together. Despite getting great notices for his performance, it was just a couple of years ago (during interviews for PERCY JACKSON) that LERMAN confided in us that the kind of role he plays in PERKS is exactly the kind of character he was hoping to avoid.

Emma Watson gets sandwiched in by Perks of Being A Wallflower costars Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller during the Nylon dinner celebrating their cover at Catch in New York City’s Meatpacking District on Saturday night (October 20).

Logan Lerman: Emma Watson Wasn't My First Onscreen Kiss

Logan Lerman from 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' is quizzed in a satellite interview in LA. He talks about what he was like at high school, his first onscreen kiss and current projects.

At school he says that he wouldn't have described himself as a 'wallflower'. 'I had a small group of friends that I was really close with growing up and we all shared the same interests which was music and film', he said. 'We just made short films and that was really our passion.' He also explains that kissing Emma Watson and Ezra Miller in the movie was not actually his first onscreen smooch. 'I remember the first time, that was awkward', he said. 'I was 12 and the girl was like 19.' Logan is currently filming for Biblical biopic 'Noah' with Emma Watson once again and Russell Crowe.

Logan Lerman On 'Perks Of Being A Wallflower,' Mystery Songs & 'Noah'

Logan Lerman has come a long way from playing Mel Gibson's son in "The Patriot." The 20-year-old actor has appeared in blockbusters like "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief," thrillers like "The Number 23" and even a Western: Lerman played Christian Bale's son in the 2007 remake of "3:10 To Yuma."

Despite that impressive resume, it's 2012 that has catapulted the California native onto the list of major talent to watch. In addition to filming Darren Aronfosky's "Noah" (where he plays the son of his "3:10 To Yuma" co-star Russell Crowe), Lerman leads the charming coming-of-age film "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."

Written and directed by Stephen Chbosky -- and based on his seminal teen novel of the same name -- "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" focuses on Lerman's Charlie, a shy high school freshman who befriends a group of seniors (played memorably by Ezra Miller, Mae Whitman and Emma Watson). With "Perks" expanding to theaters around the country this weekend, Lerman spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about his work on the film, what Aronofsky is like as a director, and whether he has any hard feelings about not landing the role of Spider-Man in "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Mae Whitman said she met with Stephen Chbosky for two hours to discuss her character before even being cast. What was your experience like with him?
We had a meeting at this one place that we ended up actually going to a bunch of times. When I first met him, I wasn't even sure which role I was going to play, and Stephen was interested in the idea of me playing Patrick [played by Ezra Miller in the finished film]. I was like, "You know, what about Charlie?" He's like, "All right, just come in and read for me." I did that and got the part. It was pretty quick but it took a while for the film to get financing and go into production. In that period of time we met a lot and discussed the story and the characters and the casting. Everything else that goes into pre-production. I think he just kind of saw what I was doing; I just presented my idea of who Charlie was and how to play him. It just seemed like he liked it.

The cast has such great chemistry together onscreen, which is so important to the story. Was there a specific moment when you realized that everyone was coming together?
No, we hated each other! [Laughs] I'm playing around. We had a great time. It was weird. I don't know if it was because of the material and how passionate everybody was about their characters, but literally within minutes we were all close friends. In the time period of making the film -- and the fact that we were all really isolated in where we were living and none of us could get around -- we all grew very close and bonded immediately. It's pretty rare to get a group of people together who all get along, or even want to hang out with each other for months. But we really lucked out. Everybody has been giving the credit to Stephen and his eye for casting and finding people that would complement each others' personalities.

Were you a fan of the book?
It was a really popular title around my high school. It was that book that was everybody's favorite on their Facebook pages, but I never read it in high school. However, when I saw the title in an email and then the script, I was already very familiar with it. "Perks" came with a priority; it was material that I wanted to read. I fell in love with it. Then I read the book and fell in love with that too. It was a reverse process. Normally people read the book first, right?

Probably true. You have a lot of voice over in "Perks of Being a Wallflower" and you do it so well. That seems like a tricky thing to pull off for many actors.
One of the challenges of it was [the elapsed time]. You record the real voice over months or a year later, when you're way past the film. For me, it was kind of odd. I kind of had to change my voice so I wasn't as mature. I had to dip back and do Charlie's own voice and affect his sweet, naive innocence. So trying to get that for the voice made it challenging. But I think it turned out pretty well.

This is such a well-rounded coming-of-age film -- it stands out because it's so different from what that genre has become over the last decade. Were there any films that you watched before filming to get you in the right frame of mind?
I've been hearing a lot of people compare it to a John Hughes film, but for me it was really "Ordinary People." It reminded me a lot of that. That was the number one reference for me. It kind of felt like the "Ordinary People" of 2012.

One of the more charming parts of the film is that Charlie and his friends can't find David Bowie's "Heroes." This is an era of Shazam and Google, but was there ever a song that you fruitlessly searched for?
Oh, so many times! So many times! That happens to me once a week.

What was the last time?
The last one [long pause] … what was it? I'm still trying to find the song. I still don't know what the song is, it's one that I'm searching for. I feel like it's a Lynyrd Skynyrd song.

Where did you hear it?
I think it was the "Wonder Years." I was watching the "Wonder Years" recently -- I know it's random. I could try to sing it for you right now, but I won't. I'm curious what it is, but I have no idea. Maybe I'll hear it on the radio.

You and Emma have great chemistry in "Perks" and now you're playing brother and sister in Darren Aronofsky's "Noah." How has that experience been?
It's great. It was so comforting. Comforting is a weird word, but it's a really intimidating set to walk on to. I'm just so excited about everybody that I'm working with and so is Emma. We're the young'uns there. Our first scene that both of us had to do was with each other. It was a nice support for us -- walking into this crazy situation with a sense of familiarity.

What is Darren like as a director?
Just the best. It's quite remarkable how decisive he is and how clear his vision is. Especially on something on this scale and size. It's foreign for him too, I guess, working with such a big budget and everything, but he's just an actors' dream. Or at least for me. I like his style. He knows what he wants.

How so?
I haven't seen the film yet, but I feel like from everything we've worked on so far, he knows how to get a performance out of you. There's also a level of trust there. The main thing is that he's so decisive. He really knows what he wants and he's clear about it from day one. He has an answer every time for every question. A lot of directors don't know what they want -- or they don't know how to dictate their vision clearly.

Last thing: Two years ago, it was widely reported that you were a strong contender to play Spider-Man in "The Amazing Spider-Man." That obviously didn't happen. Is it difficult watching the casting process play out in the media like that?
No, not really. I mean, do I give a shit? Sometimes. The only frustrating thing is when you're misquoted or something like that. It happens a lot. So you learn how to manage those quotes that people can [take out of context]. But in terms of ["Spider-Man"], there's no bitterness at all.

Emma Watson Was Desperate To Perform Perks Stunt

Actress Emma Watson insisted on performing a car stunt in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower as she felt it was important for her to experience the adrenaline-pumping thrill.

The Brit stars as free-spirited teen Sam in the coming-of-age drama, which features a central scene in which her character stands up in the backseat of a car through the sunroof, and stretches out her arms as her pal drives through a tunnel.

Watson reveals a team of stunt experts wanted to hire a stand-in, but she was adamant she should be the one to film the key moment.

She tells U.K. TV show Daybreak, "It was so amazing. It was really funny, the stunt team on the film really didn't want to let me do it. It was meant to be a stunt girl but I was like, 'You can't not let me have that moment!' It was weirdly emotional. It really felt like... metaphorically like I was coming through something. It was cool."

Watson also admits playing an ordinary student gave her insight into the high school experiences she missed out on growing up on the Harry Potter movie sets.

She says, "She's this awesome character and very different to obviously what I've done before so it was really nice... I kind of got to have a bit of what I didn't have. Just the experience of making it has been really meaningful to me."

Logan Lerman enjoyed perks of Pittsburgh during filming

Even Mae Whitman and her co-stars didn't know everything Logan Lerman was going through on the set of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."

"Mae was actually just telling me, it's so weird seeing this movie right now because you'd come home and we'd all hang out -- 'cause they would come to my room all the time -- and you're like, 'Oh yeah, I had a long day,' but we had no idea you were doing this. ... I guess I'm a little quiet about it," Logan Lerman acknowledged.

In that regard, he's just like Charlie, his character in "Perks," opening today at AMC-Loews at the Waterfront and Manor in Squirrel Hill.

"Home" was the Crowne Plaza hotel in Bethel Park, one of the last places pesky paparazzi might have thought to look for Mr. Lerman, Ms. Whitman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller or other notables. In fact, Mr. Lerman slipped across the street to the movie theater to see such features as "The Green Lantern" and "Super 8."

At the time of the Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie had its world premiere, Mr. Lerman had not seen "Perks," but he weighed in on related subjects in a brief interview:

Novelist-screenwriter-director Stephen Chbosky: "He's a sweet, kind person."

Filming a pivotal scene inside the Fort Pitt Tunnel: "It was incredible, it was really cool. I mean, the freedom that we had to go in there and do it, and there was nobody else and they shut it down at that time of night. The first time you did it, it was a rush, it really was," bringing a flood of different emotions. "It was very powerful."

Staying in the suburbs: "Well, I liked the isolation. It helped me through the role, but then, on the weekends and some days off, I'd be able to travel into the city but rarely. I did only a few times."

Researching the role: "I did a lot of different things, but I'd say the key element to it all was isolation. Alone to my thoughts, alone with the script, just reading it over and over again, saying the words aloud, figuring out what's going on in his mind and creating a clear arc for him. For his journey."

Sharing the spotlight: "It's nice. Everybody has a great part. Stephen did a fantastic job of creating an amazing story but creating very complicated characters. I'm proud of everybody in the film and what they did."

Translating a beloved book: "Because of the fact that it's so loved and has such a big fan base, it's surprising that I didn't actually have it on much of a pedestal for that reason. I was more focused on the challenges of the character's arc."

Pittsburgh memories: "It was a beautiful place, and I had a really great time, great food and people. ... I went to a Pirates game, that was a lot of fun. And it was just the most beautiful baseball stadium I'd ever been to, the way that it's angled to the Downtown, it's gorgeous."

The 22-year-old actress sat down with Nick Grimshaw during his breakfast radio show and revealed there are scenes in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower that she can’t watch.

“It’s really funny because when I watch the film back, there are a few things I can’t watch,” Emma expressed. “I can’t watch the Rocky Horror dancing scene, and I can’t watch the kissing scenes.”

“This film really pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Emma continued. “I told the director that I have just come from playing Hermione Granger and you are expecting me to dance and putting me in corsets, and it’s difficult.”

Emma Watson: 'Perks of Being a Wallflower spoke to me'

Emma Watson has discussed her role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Speaking about the film's setting in 1991, Watson explained that the time period allowed her to feel separate from the story while still identifying with its themes.

"I think it's funny because my generation feels that with Twitter, social networking, they feel that everything has changed and everything is so different, and it's very easy to feel alone and very misunderstood," Watson mused to Flicks and Bits.

"And actually what this movie shows is that it's the same issues, it's the same stuff, it's just playing out in different forums and in different ways and through different media.

"I think the movie, because it's set in roughly 1991, it certainly gave me enough distance watching it that I didn't think someone was 'trying to be me', or trying to be me and my friends. So it never felt awkward or not right.

"But then it's also close enough that I felt it was really speaking to me."

The Perks of Being a Wallflower stars Logan Lerman as a shy and introverted teenager. Watson plays his love interest, alongside Ezra Miller (We Need to Talk About Kevin) as a new friend.

The film is directed and adapted by Stephen Chbosky, from his own 1999 novel of the same name.

Watson has said that she accepted the role in part because she wanted to show that she could transform, following her role as Hermione in the Harry Potter series.

‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’: A Trip to High School, Without the Stereotypes (MOVIE REVIEW)

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower opens with 15-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman), counting down the days left before he graduates high school. Too bad for him he’s only on his first day of his freshman year.

Based on the 1999 bestselling young adult novel by Stephen Chbosky, Wallflower follows Charlie through that fateful year from the time he is friendless and mocked for doing crazy stuff like reading The Great Gatsby and (gasp) enjoying it, to his tearful good-bye to newfound friends.

And who are those newfound friends?

There’s Patrick, played by a flamboyant Ezra Miller who portrayed the anything-but-flamboyant Kevin in last year’s bad-seed thriller We Need To Talk About Kevin.

In Wallflower, he is the gay and witty best friend, an indie version of the kind you see in sitcoms, who introduces Charlie to all his eccentric buddies including Mary Elizabeth (Mae Whitman), a Buddhist punk rocker who gets accepted to Harvard, and Susan (Julie Garner) an apparent deaf-mute (so few are her lines) who likes to steal jeans from department stores. Last but not least is Sam, (Emma Watson), Patrick’s half sister, a mousy girl with a slutty past and eye for Charlie.

Each of them have sordid pasts the way only people in movies seem to, but Chbosky’s characters are distinctive enough, and they’re a fun clique to hang out with, whether they’re rocking The Rocky Horror Picture Show or smoking dope and admiring the carpet.

Privileged kids from a Pittsburgh suburb, they lead a seemingly idyllic existence attending class, going to football games, partying and studying. But the bottom of the flowerpot holds nastiness not seen among the roses, and Charlie has a problem, which he lays out for us in letters to a friend who committed suicide before the beginning of the story (a contrived and simplistic narrative device).

Thing is, while there are numerous references to Charlie’s emotional instability, he usually seems to be the most anchored person in the room. So when larger emotional crises befall him later in the movie, it feels forced, pushing Wallflower to the edge of mediocrity at its dramatically most critical stage.

For this reason, as well as an overall unevenness, a good movie is kept from being a great one.

A moment in the first act where Sam stands in the bay of a pickup truck while Patrick floors it through a tunnel — David Bowie’s Heroes blaring on the soundtrack — is an uplifting moment that has no lift. The scene just lays there.

Yet other moments deliver genuine emotional punch due to fine acting from the entire ensemble, particularly Lerman and Watson who achieve an authentic intimacy that effortlessly draws the audience in.

Lerman has shown a steady hand in a career defined by mainstream choices like Percy Jackson as well as art house titles like 3:10 to Yuma.

Next up, he will reunite with Wallflower costar, Emma Watson for Darren Aronofksy’s Noah starring Russell Crowe.

Over the years he has managed carve out a firm niche for himself but now, like Watson, is in the process of making that daunting leap to grownup roles which, more often than not, marks the end of a young actor’s career.

For Watson, with half the world growing up getting to know her as Hermione Granger, her post-Potter career has been defined by smart choices, including a supporting part in last year’s My Week With Marilyn and Sofia Coppola’s upcoming The Bling Ring.

In the Potter movies, Watson demonstrated adequate chops as a child actor who grew up to infuse her performances with genuine range and depth.
