Selena Gomez Wanted To Invent 'Cool' Voice For 'Hotel Transylvania'

Selena Gomez spent years casting spells as the star of "The Wizards of Waverly Place" on Disney. And after taking a break from supernatural roles, the actress returns to those roots this week as a teen vampire in the new animated flick, "Hotel Transylvania."

And, she went into filming hoping she could dream up a new voice for the part, but was disappointed to find out that she would sound like herself in the family-friendly movie.

"No, I attempted [a voice] and failed," she told MTV News during the Toronto International Film Festival, where she premiered the flick. "I tried when I got the script, I was like 'Oh maybe I can do something cool and different.' And I ended up going in, and they were like 'No, we like your voice best.' I was like 'Oh, all right'."

However, despite showing off a pretty impressive Scottish accent during the interview, she confessed, "Well, I don't think I can [do any voices]. That's the sad part."

Gomez joined the flick earlier this year; her role was originally intended for fellow former Disney star Miley Cyrus. In it, she plays Dracula's (Adam Sandler) teenage daughter. The film imagines the famed vamp as a hotel owner who caters to other mystical folks. When the home away from home is discovered by a human boy, who also happens to fall for Gomez's Mavis, well it has Dracula freaking out a little bit.

It opens on Friday. It also stars Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Cee Lo Green and Jon Lovitz.

Selena Gomez goes for all out sex appeal in leather and lace at Hotel Transylvania photo call

She voices the character of a vampire in the movie but Selena Gomez was all vamp at the photo call for Hotel Transylvania yesterday.

The actress brought plenty of sex appeal to the table by combining leather and lace for the event at the Toronto Film Festival.

The 20-year-old wore a black lace body tucked into matching skin-tight leather trousers which showed off her svelte figure.

She teamed the racy ensemble with black patent pumps but gave it a demure touch with the help of a crisp white jacket.

Selena posed up with her co-stars David Spade, Fran Drescher, Kevin James, Adam Sandler, Molly Shannon and Andy Samberg at the event.

And it wasn’t just her fellow actors who were on hand for some pictures as life-size characters from the upcoming animated movie were also ready for their close-up.

After striking some poses arm in arm, the cast headed inside where they took part in a press conference.

Later on the stars headed to a gala presentation of the film – but not before Selena had switched into a more glamorous outfit.

She wore a ruffled high-neck black frock and sweetly brought along her boyfriend Justin Bieber’s two-year-old half-brother Jaxon.

They showed their close bond as Selena carried the cute tot in her arms and gave him a sweet kiss for the cameras.

Justin has just jetted in to his native Ontario, Canada where the pair are likely to be looking forward to a romantic reunion.

The Toronto International Film Festival has been jam-packed for Selena, who was promoting her gritty new movie Spring Breakers prior to attending events for Hotel Transylvania.

While Selena has stayed in Canada her co-star Vanessa Hudgens has returned to Los Angeles where she was spotted heading to the gym yesterday.

Following its debut at the film festival, Hotel Transylvania will be released in cinemas on September 28.

Selena Gomez Is Rebellious Daughter in First 'Hotel Transylvania' Clip

"Hotel Transylvania" has just dropped its first clip. Featuring Selena Gomez's and Adam Sandler's characters, it sees Gomez's Mavis celebrating her 118th birthday in her locked-up room. For a birthday present, she begs her dad Dracula to allow her explore the world outside their hidden castle.

Mavis keeps on whining and moaning to her over-protective dad until she doesn't realize that her bloodsucker dad actually says "yes." Happy to know that her father agrees to let her go, she spontaneously jumps into the air and hugs her dad tightly.

Hotel Transylvania is Dracula's (Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free from meddling with the human world. However, there's a little known fact about Dracula; he is not only the Prince of Darkness, he is also a dad.

Over-protective of his teenage daughter, Mavis, Dracula fabricates tales of elaborate dangers to dissuade her adventurous spirit. As a haven for Mavis, he opens the hotel, where his daughter and some of the world's most famous monsters can kick back in safety and peace.

For Dracula, catering to all of those monsters is no problem - but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

Gomez replaces Miley Cyrus, who was initially tapped to voice Mavis. She is joined in the voice cast ensemble by Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon and Cee-Lo Green.

The animated movie will grace theaters across the U.S. on September 28.

Selena Gomez Becomes Rebellious Vampire in 'Hotel Transylvania'

SelGo will be showing off some fangs very soon!

The actress will become a rebellious 118 year-old “teenage” vampire named Mavis in Sony’s new computer-animated 3D comedy film “Hotel Transylvania” due out in theatres September 28th.

“It’s a family-oriented movie and it touches on monsters and Dracula and all the stories that have been around for ages,” Gomez told Fox News Latino.

Gomez voices the character of Mavis, who has been living in her father’s castle all her life.

Comedian Adam Sandler voices Dracula, Gomez’s over protective dad who will stop at nothing to make sure his daughter’s curiosity doesn’t get the best of her. Gomez admits she was a little intimidated to work with the comedy giant but the two quickly bonded.

“He [Adam Sandler] was really supportive, really funny, he was super happy with the movie, which makes me happy,” Gomez said.

In the film, Mavis wishes to spread her wings and explore the outside world, something the 20-year-old actress can relate to in real life.

"It’s not like I get vacation time from my parents when I go to different places to work, they’re right there with me,” quipped Gomez who said her parents go “everywhere with her.

The young actress says her parents and her team are what have kept her grounded since her early beginnings in Hollywood at the age of 10.

“I have a great support system, I really do, I have great friends, I have a great family, I have amazing fans and I’m super lucky to do what I do.”

Gomez began her acting career on the hit kid show “Barney and Friends.” But it was her role as Alex Russo on Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” that made her a household name.

The show ran for five years and celebrated its last season this year. Yet the actress has no intentions of is slowing down. Gomez’s third studio album, “When the Sun Goes Down,” released last year was certified platinum, and she recently launched a new fashion and fragrance line.

SelGo is already hard at work on her fourth album. Her boyfriend, teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, is reportedly writing the songs for that album.

Although Gomez has transformed from young teenager to young lady in front of the public eye, she tells us she has stayed true to who she is.

“I’m still the same person, but getting older having more experiences, [just] being a little more independent,” said Gomez. “It’s kind of a little bit of a change but not too drastic.”

Off screen her romantic relationship with Bieber has been public for many months. On-screen, the actress has recently embarked in more adult-themed movies. She recently wrapped “Spring Breakers” where she stars alongside James Franco.

The movie is a comedy drama about four college girls who end up in jail after robbing a restaurant.

“It’s a little bit of a departure for me,” said Gomez. “It’s a little scandalous in a way, but it was a great script, a great director and a working with James [Franco] was an honor,” said Gomez.

She also got to branch out and do stunt work while filming the action crime movie “Getaway,” where she stars alongside Ethan Hawke and John Voight.

“I’ve never been in car chasing scenes, and being thrown around and all of that stuff was fun for me.”

Selena Gomez Talks About Growing Up In Her Movie Career

Selena Gomez’ movie career is off to a good start. After wrapping TV’s The Wizards of Waverly Place, she’s shot the indie drama Spring Breakers and upcoming action thrillers Aftershock and Getaway. She’s just signed on for the comedy Parental Guidance Suggested but first you’ll see her in Hotel Transylvania. Or rather, you’ll hear her because she provides a voice in the animated film.

Gomez plays Mavis, Dracula’s rebellious teenage daughter. “I’m in that place a little bit,” Gomez said. “I’m nineteen, so it’s fun for me to kind of grow up. I want to be able to see places too. I get to travel, and I’m very lucky to get to go the places I go to, but I’ve never actually been to those places alone, or by myself, or with my friends. I never actually had that. So I think I’m going through that a little bit, doing things on my own a little bit more, and having a bit of that freedom, and like I said before I do kind of mumble, and I am a little kind of quirky in the sense of Mavis. I feel like I relate to her in that sense.”

Parental Guidance still casts Gomez as a teenager, which she won’t be able to play forever. Using her voice, she was able to stay in the teenage zone for at least a little longer.

“Actually to be honest with you, I’m really not that great with animation, because I feel that sometimes it’s harder to act with your voice than your actual self, but this was such a great experience. They were wonderful to work with, and it was a good thing for me to do in that area, because I was doing a couple of movies that were a little out of my comfort zone. So, I felt like it was nice to go back to that.”

Hotel Transylvania opens September 28.

Selena Gomez Talks HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, Playing Dracula’s Daughter, and More

This week, Collider was invited to participate in an early footage preview for the Sony Pictures Animation film Hotel Transylvania, opening in theaters on September 28th. Set in Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) lavish resort where monsters and their families can be free to be who they are without humans to bother them, the story follows his beloved daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez), who longs to explore the world on her 118th birthday. But, things are drastically shaken up when a human guy (Andy Samberg) stumbles into the hotel and takes an immediate shine to Mavis.

After getting to see a series of scenes from the film, which looks to be both funny and heartfelt, and showcased some of the wacky and wild legendary monsters featured in it, we got the opportunity to take part in a press conference with Selena Gomez, who talked about her desire to do animated roles as a way to stay connected to her family audience, the pressures of playing Dracula’s daughter, how honored she is to be a part of this cast, the ways in which she identifies with this character, how she prepared for this role, and that she loves scary movies and being scared. Check out what she had to say after the jump.

Question: Do you see doing animated roles as a way for you to stay connected to your family audience while growing into older roles?

SELENA GOMEZ: Yes, that’s exactly one of the reasons why I did it. To be honest, I’m actually not that great with animation because I feel like sometimes it’s harder to act with your voice than to act with your actual self. But, this was such a great experience and [everyone was] wonderful to work with. It was a good thing for me to do, in that area, because I was doing a couple movies that were out of my comfort zone. I felt this was a nice way to go back to that.

Was there any part of you that wanted to try a Transylvanian accent?

GOMEZ: No. But, for the part where I make fun of my dad (Adam Sandler), that was hard. I’m definitely not as good as Adam, when it comes to that.

What do you think of Adam Sandler, as a father figure?

GOMEZ: He’s awesome! He’s so cool! He was there for almost all of my sessions. He was really nice. He would be a cool dad. He’s somebody who’s really funny and just makes everybody laugh.

Were you nervous about playing Dracula’s daughter?

GOMEZ: There’s a lot of pressure to be Dracula’s daughter. There’s never really been a story that’s been about that and their relationship. I think the way she was structured, and the way I read her, was exactly the way I thought it would be. I hope we don’t disappoint anybody on how she is.

What was it like to be a part of this all-star cast?

GOMEZ: I didn’t have much pressure because I didn’t see all of them. But, I am very honored to be a part of this cast.

With this film and your work on Wizards of Waverly Place, do you have an affinity for the supernatural?

GOMEZ: I guess so. I hadn’t thought about that. I like to bring kids’ imaginations to life, a little bit. With my show, we were able to be invisible and fly and walk on walls. That is stuff that every kid wishes they had the ability to do, and we were able to bring that alive. I think that’s what we’re doing with this movie, too. With all of the characters, from Frankenstein to Dracula, and to the new characters, it was just fun to bring them alive.

Do you see your own mannerisms in the character, at all?

GOMEZ: The first couple of times, I didn’t. But, I think I do have some of her mannerisms, and the way she talks and how she mumbles a little bit.

In what ways do you identify with Mavis?

GOMEZ: I’m in that place, a little bit. I’m 19, it’s fun for me to grow up and I want to see places, too. I get to travel, and I’m very lucky to get to go to the places that I get to go to, but I have never been to these places alone or with my friends. I’ve never had that. I think I’m going through what she is going through, doing things on my own a little more. I am getting a little bit of that freedom. And I’m kind of quirky, like Mavis.

Whose advice did you seek out and how did you prepare for this role?

GOMEZ: I went in and they showed me some of it. I’m not big on being influenced by others. I have a lot of people who influence me, but I just wanted to go in and do my best with this. (Director) Genndy [Tartakovsky] and (producer) Michelle [Murdocca] were my influences. They helped me and guided me, and I was lucky to have them. Once I got in there, I wanted to stay in it. You want to feel what the character feels.

Will you do a song for the soundtrack?

GOMEZ: I haven’t, but we did a song in a musical number. It’s very funny. Adam Sandler raps. Enough said.

What scares you?

GOMEZ: Not a lot, to be honest. I love scary movies, and I love being scared. I go to Knott’s Berry Farm every year, for Halloween.

What makes you laugh?

GOMEZ: I don’t know. Adam Sandler.

What hotels do you like to stay in, personally?

GOMEZ: I don’t know. I stay in all kinds of hotels, even a haunted one once. It was for my birthday. This sounds a little weird, but I like being scared. We were on tour and they had me stay in a hotel in Utah. They gave us this whole spiel, but nothing happened, so I was a little bummed. But, it was cool.

Do you believe in ghosts?

GOMEZ: No, not necessarily. I just think it’s all fun.

You have a birthday coming up. Do you know how you’ll celebrate?

GOMEZ: I will be at the Teen Choice Awards on my birthday, which isn’t a bad thing ‘cause they’re really fun. I’ll probably go to dinner with my family. It’s 20, so it’s not that exciting.

Selena Gomez's Scary Car Stunt: "This Is Going to Be Where I Die"

Selena Gomez can totally relate to vampires.

At least she does to Mavis, the daughter of Dracula whom she plays in the upcoming animated flick, Hotel Transylvania.

The movie (out in October) centers on Mavis' 118th birthday and her desire to leave home and explore the human world.

"I relate to that in a way because I travel with my parents to most places I go," Gomez told me yesterday during a press preview of Hotel Transylvania. "I'm only in different countries and different parts of the world for less than 48 hours. I don't get to actually see the places when I tour."

Her dream?

"I want to be able to go out and take a cross-country trip with just my friends, on my own without any obligations would be nice," said Gomez, who turns 20 next month. "I've never done that before."

Hotel Transylvania costars Adam Sandler as Dracula, Cee Lo as the Mummy, Kevin James as Frankenstein with Fran Drescher playing his wife and Andy Samberg as the lone human who falls for Mavis.

We wouldn't be E! Online if we didn't ask Gomez whom she thought the hotter vampire was—Robert Pattinson or Mr. Sandler? "I'm a sucker for Adam Sandler any day," she said with a smile. "I would choose Adam."

And no, she doesn't think the family friendly movie is trying to unseat Twilight. "They're so different," Gomez said. "I didn't even think about that until people mentioned it today. I really didn't. This is way different."

Transylvania isn't Gomez's only movie coming to a theater near you. After wrapping Spring Breakers with James Franco and Vanessa Hudgens, she was off to Bulgaria to shoot Getaway, an action movie with Ethan Hawke.

"We had a stunt driver come in and teach Ethan how to do 360-degree spins because he wanted to do all of it himself," Gomez said. "First I wasn't in the car but then I got in and he was doing and I was like, 'You've done this before in another movie, right?' and he said, 'No, this is my first time.' I was like, 'Great, so this is going to be where I die.'"

Fortunately, Gomez escaped with just some little bruises. But, she smile, "I actually wanted to get a few injuries so I could be like, 'Yeah, I've got battle scars from making an action movie.'"

Selena Gomez Lightens Her Hair—How Does It Look? Read more: http://www.eonline.com/news/selena_gomez_lightens_her_hairmdashhow/326147#ixzz1yzxqjkFR

Hotel Transylvania may have dark undertones, but not its star!

Selena Gomez showed up at a press event for the upcoming animated flick sporting newly lightened tresses along with her tastefully ripped jeans and spike-studded booties.

While the singer-actress has been easing out of the dark-hair club for awhile now—purple and blue, anybody?—this 'do lands her squarely in the subtle auburn department.

And we think it's lovely!

The reddish-brown hue adds new bounce to Gomez's long locks—and we wonder if Justin Bieber has noticed how it brings out the sparkle in her eyes.

Hotel Transylvania features Gomez as the voice of Dracula's "teenage" daughter, alongside the parental tones of Adam Sandler as her dad and proprietor of the titular hotel, as well as Kevin James, Andy Samberg, Steve Buscemi and David Spade.

Part of yesterday's junket in Culver City, Calif., was a mock 118th birthday for Gomez's character, Mavis (no wonder she's so in need of a love interest), bat-accented cake and all.

First Official Trailer for HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA

The first official trailer for the animated comedy Hotel Transylvania has gone online. Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack), the story centers on Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) trying to throw a party for his daughter Mavis’ (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday, but his plans go haywire when a human (Andy Samberg) comes to the hotel and develops a crush on Mavis. The animation actually looks pretty great, and I think the story has some fun potential, but Sandler’s work as Dracula is a bit hard to get used to. It sounds like the actor’s “goofy” voice he uses when making jokes or putting on a character for SNL, so it’s tough to buy it as the actual voice of this Dracula. We don’t really get much into the story here, but there are more than a few laughs (who doesn’t love a good “skeletons taking a shower” joke?) and I’m pleasantly surprised by how fun it all looks.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer. The voice cast also includes David Spade (Griffin the Invisible Man), Steve Buscemi (Wayne the Werewolf), Kevin James (Frankenstein), Molly Shannon (Wanda the Werewolf) and Cee Lo Green (Murray the Mummy). Hotel Transylvania opens on September 28th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Hotel Transylvania:

Welcome to the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s (Adam Sandler) lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of the world’s most famous monsters – Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, a family of werewolves, and more – to celebrate his daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but his world could come crashing down when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

Adam Sandler & Selena Gomez take on famous monsters in new 'Hotel Transylvania' images

Two new images have been released from the upcoming 3-D animated comedy "Hotel Transylvania", which centers on Dracula's (voiced by Adam Sandler) attempts to stop his daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez, who recently replaced Miley Cyrus in the voice role) from falling in love with a young human (Andy Samberg) who happens upon their five-star "monsters-only" resort. The film was directed by animation veteran Genddy Tartakovsky ("Star Wars: Clone Wars", "Samurai Jack").

The images look relatively cool (if not exactly unique), though anything that involves Sandler is a clear cause for concern. Nevertheless, Tartakovsky is a well-respected 12-time Emmy nominee for his animation work, so perhaps he'll be able to bring something special to the project.

Other voice actors in the film include Kevin James (Frankenstein), David Spade (Griffin the Invisible Man), Fran Drescher (Frankenstein's bride Eunice), David Koechner (Quasimodo, now a gourmet chef), Cee Lo Green (Murray the Mummy), Steve Buscemi (Wayne the werewolf) and Molly Shannon (Wayne's wife Wanda).

Selena Gomez as Mavis and a View of Hotel Transylvania

Miley Cyrus is out and Selena Gomez is in. We are talking about the upcoming animated feature film, Hotel Transylvania. You heard it here when Cyrus left the film, leaving a key role open for Gomez. That’s the part of Mavis, Dracula’s daughter. Do you think we’ll be seeing Marvis dolls soon? I bet we will. Until then check out the latest art from the film.

The movie’s official Facebook page offers all kinds of goodies, including these film banners. The Sony Pictures Animation comes out September 21st, 2012, starring Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James Fran Drescher, David Koechner, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon and David Spade. Its directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. I think it’ll be just enough parts spooky and fun.

Hotel Transylvania is run by Dracula as a resort for ghouls and monsters and their families. When an ordinary boy winds up there things get pretty interesting. Just don’t tell Dracula that the young man has a crush on Mavis.

Gomez is quickly becoming a movie making machine. We have reported on her cameo in the earthquake thriller, Aftershock; on the adaptation, The Sky is Everywhere; and on the gritty Spring Breakers. It is all a part of her master plan for 2012 and seems to be making her break for her band, The Scene, well worth it. When we know more, you will, too.
