Demi Lovato and Britney Spears Have Different Ways of Dealing With Bad 'X Factor' Auditions

As The X Factor moves closer to its fall premiere date, new judges Demi Lovato and Britney Spears continue to pull back the curtain on their early experiences. “The talent here has been pretty great, I’ve seen a few people really in groups that really caught my attention,” Lovato told Access Hollywood following the show’s San Francisco auditions. ”Definitely better than Kansas [City],” chimed in Spears, throwing shade to the city where certain hopefuls dared to perform another one of her songs (and didn’t completely suck), as well as the great state of Missouri. What would BravoAndy say?

Despite her ability to decipher the good cities from the bad through these initial weeks of taping, Spears sees herself in somewhat of a maternal role, struggling between being nice to the young folks eager to have their aspirations ripped to shreds on national television, and saving us all some time by telling them they’re better suited for Applebee’s. “I think I’m a fair judge. Sometimes it’s kind of hard because I know what they’ve been through, and being so young and achieving their dreams and stuff,” she says, all too generous. “It’s such a subtle and, like, delicate situation when they’re that young, you know? And so you just have to use constructive criticism and be there for them and show them support.” If only an older starlet was willing to treat you that way 10 years ago, Britney. Instead, the adults in your inner circle were feeding you Frappuccinos and filling your head with the idea that a certain televised kiss was enough to make you the next Madonna. (Verdict’s still out on that one, I guess.)

As for another member of the judging panel who knows a thing or two about entering this circus at a young age, Lovato can’t escape the “brat” label when it comes to her fellow judge and boss, Simon Cowell. “Simon’s great, but he nags on me so much, that I don’t know if I can take any longer,” she explains. Maybe he can’t stand having another harsh critic at his table? “I say what’s on my mind and it’s really hard for me to smile while someone’s performing if they’re horrible,” Demi adds. “I have to be super, super honest and sometimes I feel bad about it.” Better than being really, really scripted.
