British singing sensation and former X-Factor contestant Olly Murs is currently on the road with One Direction, so it’s safe to say the 28-year-old singer is fully aware that boy bands are back.
During a sit down interview with Celebuzz at a recent show in California, Olly talked about life on the road, hanging with the 1D guys — Nial Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson — and which boy band he would like to see make a comeback.
Celebuzz: You have a large female fan base– is that cool or creepy?
Olly Murs: It’s pretty cool on this tour… but a lot of the girls are younger! I’m having a great time on the tour and I’m just chuffed that they know me! It’s been a crazy couple of months for me. Coming to America, it’s been amazing really. [My single] “Heart Skips a Beat,” is getting some really big reviews and getting on some really great radio stations. It’s all going really well for me, so I can’t complain.
CB: What has been the most surreal part of the tour so far?
OM: I think it was the first US show. I mean we did the Canadian shows, which were insane, but the one for me was Detroit. It was incredible! The reaction also in Chicago was sensational. So having that kind of feedback is great. You don’t expect it! So to get it here in the States is such a massive kind of treat. So to have the One Directions fans to kind of a latch on to me and like my music is great.
CB: What’s it like hanging with all these guys from city to city?
OM: It’s great! I mean they are great guys. You have met the boys — they’re just cool and chill and having fun. I mean who wouldn’t be at their age? They are traveling around and seeing some amazing things. Seeing so many girls, and it’s such an insane fan base. So, it’s great to be on the road with them. I’m having a great time
CB: What’s something about the One Directions boys that maybe the fans don’t know?
OM: There’s nothing really that the fans don’t know about them. They are what they are, you know? They are just five young guys having a great time. That’s what I love about them. What you see is what you get. There’s nothing I know about them really that no one else does. They just are who they are.
CB: Were you into the boy bands at all before One Direction?
OM: Yeah! I was a massive N’SYNC fan. It was always Backstreet Boys and N’SYNC and I like both. If it came down to it, N’SYNC would always be my favorite. I love Justin Timberlake, I love JC [Chasez] – the whole group. I’ve got every single album. Massive fan.
CB: That reunion needs to happen! But I doubt it will.
OM: It’s just such a shame, I don’t think there ever will be [a reunion]. I think it was a moment in their career and that’s it. I don’t think Justin will ever go back; which is such a massive shame. I loved it when he did his solo tour and he played some of the old N’SYNC songs on it. I loved it!
CB: You are one of the biggest up and comers right now. Is there someone that you really want to collaborate with?
OM: I would like to do a song with Flo-Rida – I think that would be cool. I think it all depends on the song and the act.
CB: So, what’s next for you?
OM: I have done most of it, but just finishing the third album. Once I finish that, I’m going to head into London. The album is coming out in September. Then I’m coming back to do the X Factor to do some presenting.
