Grande had a big week online as her newest single, "Break Free," dropped on Wednesday, July 2.
On July 2, pop princess Ariana Grande premiered her new single, "Break Free," on a special rebooted edition of MTV's "Total Request Live" (or, in this case, Total Ariana Live). The track, featuring EDM powerhouse Zedd, trended worldwide on Twitter, and immediately hit No. 1 on the Billboard Twitter Trending 140 where it remained for roughly six hours. That sustained online activity was enough for "Break Free" to debut at No. 3 on the weekly Billboard Twitter Top Tracks chart.
"Break Free" reached the top of the Trending 140 once again on Monday, July 7, when she dropped the track's "Star Wars"-style music video, so expect this track's activity to be sustained on the chart into next week. Grande announced on "Total Ariana Live" that “Break Free” will get its first live performance on August 24 at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Grande benefits on the Social 50 as well, moving 5-4 with a 52 percent increase in her overall score.
The Social 50 incorporates the following metrics: weekly additions of fans across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram; reactions and conversations across Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook; and views to an artist’s Wikipedia page, according to music analytics provider Next Big Sound.
The official audio to "Break Free" was uploaded to her personal YouTube (not Vevo) channel, causing a 284 percent increase in reactions on the platform and contributing to an 82 percent overall bump in fan reaction across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. This reaction coalesces into a gain of more than 555,000 new fans across those same platforms.
Also making notable gains on the Social 50 chart this week is Nicki Minaj, who moves into the top 10 moving 22-8 thanks to a 113 percent bump in reactions on Instagram, where her posts received more than 7 million likes for the week. Minaj benefits from the release of Trey Songz's new No. 1 album "Trigga," which contains the Minaj-featured track "Touchin, Lovin."
Recapping the rest of the Social 50 top 10: Miley Cyrus swings 2-1 above Justin Bieber, who slips 1-2. Five Seconds of Summer stays at No. 3 for another week, while Jennifer Lopez ascends 11-5 due to favorable post reactions on Facebook and Instagram. Taylor Swift rises 8-6, above Beyonce who holds steady at No. 7. Katy Perry moves 14-9 and La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de Rene Camacho anchors at No. 10.
