A cause close to her heart: Demi Lovato speaks about her own personal struggles during mental health event

She's a role model to millions who has never shied away from discussing her own battle with mental health issues.

And on Thursday night, singer Demi Lovato used her star power to shed some much-needed light on the subject as she spoke during The Jed Foundation's 13th Annual Gala - The Brightest Night 2014.

The long-time supporter of the Foundation also presented student Margaret Kramer with the Jerry Greenspan Student Voice Of Mental Health Award for her tireless work raising awareness of mental health and reducing the prejudice surrounding it during the event held at the Jacob K Javits Convention Center in New York City.

The previous day, she revealed that she had once again experimented with her long locks, with the roots her natural dark brown and a bright purple shade from the mid-lengths that fades down into a light lilac/silver hue at the ends.

Of course, Demi's own personal struggle with mental illness came to a very public head in 2010.

She pulled out of the Jonas Brothers' tour on October 30 to enter a treatment facility to deal with 'physical and emotional issues' after reportedly punching a back-up dancer.

She was discharged from the Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center in Illinois on January 28, 2011, later admitting that she had been suffering from bulimia and self-injury and had been self-medicating with drugs and alcohol.
