'Love to my Beliebers!': Justin Bieber becomes second celebrity to reach 50million Twitter followers

He started the month in style by celebrating his 20th birthday.

And Justin Bieber is now toasting a double celebration after becoming only the second star to hit 50million Twitter followers.

The Never Say Never hitmaker took to the social networking site to thank his fans, known as Beliebers, for helping him to reach the milestone.

He wrote: '#50millionstrong. Love to my beliebers (sic)'

The achievement appears to be a great excuse for Justin to carry on his birthday celebrations and his tweet came shortly after he encouraged his followers to continue revelling with him.

He tweeted: 'Keep the party going'

Justin was pipped to the 50million followers mark by Katy Perry, who hit the figure in February.

The 29-year-old singer, who now has 51million followers, reached the milestone shortly after tweeting her fans, or Katycats as she calls them, and urging them to follow John Mayer, who she is rumoured to have split with since.

She wrote at the time: 'FOLLOW FRIDAY @JohnMayer who's account has basically been in a coma state for a couple of years. Let's update him on all the cat youtubes he (sic)'

Despite missing out on being the first celebrity to hit 50million followers, Justin has had plenty of reason to celebrate in recent days after turning 20 years old on March 1.

The singer was inundated with messages from his fans and afterwards he took to Twitter to thank them.

He wrote: 'Thanks to everyone for all the birthday wishes. Means a lot. Blessed and hoping we can continue to change the world together. Thanks (sic)'

Justin's father, Jeremy Bieber, flying to the star's new home in Atlanta, Georgia with his other children, Jazmyn, five, and Jaxon, four, to help him mark the occasion on Saturday.

Jeremy wrote: 'Happy Birthday son. Wow 20! (sic)'

Justin's mother Pattie Mallette, who split from Jeremy when the singer was two, also tweeted: 'Happy Birthday YOU KNOW WHO! I love you. Xoxo (sic)'
