Demi Lovato is like an unbreakable, perfect beacon of hope for girls and boys (and grown ups who write about television shows) all over the world. But it wasn’t always that way, as her fans know. Demi’s had her share of tribulations, and underwent treatment in rehab for anger, self-harm, substance, and eating issues back in 2010. But just because we’re paying more attention to her music and wise words as an X Factor judge these days, doesn’t mean she’s forgotten.
"A couple years ago, it's no secret, I had to go into treatment for a bunch of issues," Demi acknowledged during the B96 Pepsi Summer Bash in Chicago on Saturday, June 15. “I want to let you know that this treatment center is called Timberline Knolls. It was here in Lemont, Illinois."
During the show, Demi gave the town a shout out for playing a part in her ascension back into a happy place. "Every time that I play Chicago, I don't know what it is,” she emoted. "Maybe it's because I felt so much love here and I've been through so much.”
Aww, we love you too, Dems! But she wasn’t done gushing. Demi also credits the Midwestern hub with being responsible for her complete life change. “I just want you guys to know that when I come to Chicago, I never forget that this place is the place that saved my life.” We totally understand: every time we have a slice of deep dish, it’s like we see the light at the end of the tunnel.
But on a serious note, Dems did what she does best: she shared her wisdom with her legions of music lovers, hoping to impart on them a little advice. “If anybody out there is dealing with an eating disorder, substance abuse, cutting, bullying, whatever it is — I want you guys to know that I've been through it and that I've gotten through it and you can do it too."
And with flying colors, we might add.
