To reduce the likelihood of involuntary screaming or fainting spells, teenage girls are asked to take a deep breath before reading the following three pieces of information:
1. Until the end of the month, singer Nick Jonas – one-third of hugely successful pop-rock band the Jonas Brothers – will be around Lake Norman working as a lead actor in the movie “Careful What You Wish For.”
2. Jonas is staying at Birkdale Village in Huntersville during the shoot, which began April 22.
3. He tries to keep a low profile when not on set, and generally stays close to his temporary home. This means he’s popped up at eeZ Fusion & Sushi, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, Red Rocks Café, Baja Soul Taqueria and Starbucks.
“It’s been tough to venture out too much, just because it gets a little crazy around here,” Jonas says. “But I have my security guy with me, and he helps me navigate around pretty easily. It’s one of those things. You just have to play it by ear and make sure that everyone’s safe.”
At 20, Jonas is the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers (which also features Joe, 23, and Kevin, 25); the group rose to fame in large part thanks to the Disney Channel and has sold 17 million albums worldwide.
Though the trio will return to touring this summer and is planning to release its first new record in four years in the fall, Nick Jonas has shown increased interest in acting. He spent four months on Broadway in the musical “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2012, and then this year committed to his first major Hollywood film.
It’s a grown-up role for Jonas, whose most high-profile acting work was in the shiny-happy “Camp Rock” movies for Disney. “Careful What You Wish For” is a thriller about a young man (Jonas) entangled in an affair with the young wife (Isabel Lucas) of an investment banker (Dermot Mulroney) who dies under suspicious circumstances.
“It’s been really fulfilling and really challenging at the same time,” Jonas says. “The material in the movie is pretty heavy, and so it’s just been a balance of trying to leave work at work and come back and be OK afterwards. But it’s been a great experience so far.”
Much of the filming is taking place right on Lake Norman (in the movie, the couple is renting the lake house next door to Jonas’s character for the summer). But the production also has been as far north as Mooresville and as far west as Belmont, which his family has strong ties to.
Jonas’s father, Kevin, was raised in Belmont and graduated in 1984 from South Point High School. Relatives still in the area include Jonas’s grandmother, an aunt and uncle, and three cousins. “To come back here and to be shooting a movie – and knowing we’re back here on tour soon (July 30 at Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre) – is a really cool thing.”
So, yes, he likes it here. He likes the southern hospitality. He loves the turkey burgers at Bad Daddy’s. And as long as his security guard approves of you, he likes to greet fans who catch him out and about at Birkdale.
“I love it when I meet people that have purchased our music or come to a concert. That support is a great thing,” Jonas says, “so I’m always down to say hello.”
