A teacher who camped out overnight in Cardiff to buy One Direction tickets for her pupils has claimed that the popular boy band have encouraged schoolchildren to learn Latin.
Sally Knights, 59, is a teacher at Redland High School for girls in Bristol, she set up camp in order to purchase four tickets for One Direction’s performance at the Motorpoint Arena, this weekend.
She then offered the tickets as a prize to her Year 9 pupils in their Latin class, the competition involved the girls designing a poster advertising the tour, but the twist was that the poster had to be in Latin.
One girl made an impressive mosaic, and another moulded a sculpted poster from clay.
“I think it’s actually quite easy to make One Direction relevant to the ancient world. Comparisons with crowds waiting to see gladiators in ancient Rome, the material culture in ancient world with posters, artwork and poems all translate the ancient into the modern quite easily,” said Sally Knights.
She says that making the classes relevant to the girls’ interests facilitates better concentration and learning in the classroom:
“If the content of what they are doing is interesting, they like it, they respond. When the four girls who had won the tickets found out, they were very excited, they knew there was no hope to see them, the tickets were going for £150 on eBay, they were ridiculous. But now they are seeing One Direction.”
14-year-old Rosie Hunter is one of the girls who won the competition, she designed a clay tablet which reads “Unam Partem”, Latin for “One Direction”.
