Dickey Elementary School's cafeteria was recently filled with excitement as students in grades 3, 4 and 5 participated in a live webcast with one of their favorite pop stars, Taylor Swift.
Swift partnered with Scholastic to promote Reading Every Day and her new album, "RED." She credited her love of reading as a large part of her musical success.
The 22-year-old singer shared information about her favorite books and how they inspired and influenced her to become the person she is today.
"Books have been a huge inspiration for me," Swift said. She reminded all students that she was only 13 years old when she wrote her first song and she won a national poetry contest when she was in the fourth grade.
She also explained reading and writing can be a great escape and a wonderful place to use imagination.
Dickey students have been participating in monthly reading initiatives and filling the halls with completed writings about the importance of reading every day. Many of the students wrote questions that were sent in with hopes they would be answered during the session.
Although none of the student's questions were selected, the students now are seeing the color red everywhere in the building.
Red streamers are strung the length of the halls, from the ceiling, on the doors, and wearing the color red will remind everyone to Read Every Day.
Stacie Burns, Enrichment teacher, and Marie Snyder, Title 1 reading teacher, collaborated with Scholastic to bring the pop artist into Dickey Elementary School.
Swift concluded the webcast with the message to Read Every Day with a hit song from the new album.
