Bradford teen pop sensation Zayn Malik and his boyband One Direction are set to enjoy the prestige of performing at the London 2012 Olympics closing ceremony, it has been reported.
The fine details of the event have yet to be revealed through official channels but it was reported yesterday that documents indicated the group would be among a host of performers taking part in the event at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday, August 12.
The ceremony is also expected to feature performances by Queen, Take That, Jessie J and The Who, along with a dance spectacle including lollipop ladies wearing Union Jack swimsuits. The information reportedly came from a set list, which may be subject to change.
Performing at the ceremony would be the latest in a line of achievements for the young band, who shot to fame after coming third in the X Factor competition in 2010. Earlier this year they became the first UK pop group in history to debut at number one in the US album chart.
The group sold 176,000 copies of their album - Up All Night - in the US in the space of a week.
A spokesman for the London 2012 Olympics said organisers wanted the line-up of the closing ceremony to be a surprise and they would not comment on speculation. It has, however, revealed the ceremony would be titled A Symphony of British Music, featuring more than 4,100 performers and celebrating music as one of Britain’s strongest cultural exports.
The London Symphony Orchestra has been appointed to record the soundtracks for the opening and closing ceremonies of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Zayn, who attended Tong High School and Lower Fields Primary School, in Bradford, was the subject of a verbal attack by a right-wing talk show host in June during One Direction’s tour of America.
