Since 2010, Jonas Brothers fans have been desperately awaiting new music and another world tour. With Kevin, Joe, and Nick each busy with solo projects, is the band ready to hit the ground running yet?
Wetpaint Entertainment recently sat down with Joe Jonas at an event for the ACUVUE 1-Day Contest in New York City to find out when more Jonas Brothers music will drop, learn about Joe's mysterious new film project, and get the lowdown on which songs mean the most to him.
Wetpaint Entertainment: Of all the people you’ve worked with, who had the biggest impact on you?
Joe Jonas: My dad. Not only personally, but musically as well. He can play pretty much any instrument. [He’s] a huge encouragement. When things go wrong or things go bad, he’s there. He knows how to [separate being] dad, manager, vocal coach, and musician.
Which tour was your favorite?
The tour that we did in the round - the world tour. That was incredible. It was so much fun. To be surrounded by fans was kind of crazy.
Which of your songs means the most to you?
I would say the songs that I did on my solo project. There’s a song called “I’m Sorry” that I wrote that I really connect with live and [I] really love performing it. With [my] brothers, there’s a ton of them, but if I had to pick one, I’d probably say “When You Look Me in the Eyes” because every time you perform that it seems like the fans get really emotional. It’s just a cool time in the show.
You’ve talked about doing a movie. Anything in the works?
I would love to do a movie. It’s kind of on-hold right now just because of shooting [The Next: Fame Is At Your Doorstep]. When you say “yes” to doing a movie, they take so much longer than making an album. You can make an album in one week. Movies take six months to a year to plan out. If the right time comes around, then I definitely will work on a project. I’m creating a project with a producer friend out in L.A., so we’ll see what happens with that.
Can you give us any more details on the L.A. project?
It’s about a young artist and the craziness that he has to deal with finding himself. I’m really excited to create it, make it, and film it. I think it will be a little longer before we do it.
Will it be scripted?
Yeah, it will be scripted. It will be pretty dark, I think. It’s exciting. It’s one of those things that when I want to go focus on acting, then I’ll make sure I do it at the right time.
How far are we from the Jonas Brothers dropping another album?
I’m not really sure. The good part is that in our careers right now, we’re able to pick and choose where we want to put the music or how much music we want to give away. We are kind of on the fence about saying - I wish I could put it out there right now, but we’ve got to critique and make things different on the record. We’ll see. Probably later this year, I’d imagine.
What do you think will be different about the next Jonas Brothers album?
The biggest difference is the life experiences we’ve been able to have for the last two to three years that we’ve been able to pull together, write about, and talk about in this album. The sound obviously is different, but lyrically there’s gonna be a lot more inspirations to pull from.
What's your favorite part about working on a Jonas Brothers album, or even a solo album?
Being able to be with my brothers again is really fun. When I did the solo project, I started to realize how much pressure it is to do all of that by yourself. Sometimes it’s the travelling, or it can be even simpler like doing a phone [call] in the morning. It’s a lot on yourself. When it’s three guys, it’s easier to point and pick. We have a lot of fun together. So, I’m glad we can get the band back together.
Will you be going on tour anytime soon?
I have a couple of shows that I’m going to be doing, but [I’m] focused now on making music again with my brothers. We’ve been in the studio. Every time that we have time off together, we’ll just get into the studio and record. We’re in a good place now, so probably later this year you’ll start to hear more about that.
