One Direction 2012: ‘Best Of British’ 1D to perform at the Olympics – want to bring a dog on tour!

One Direction are ruling the world right now so it seems only fitting that they would be booked to play at the London Olympics, to represent what is best of British.

The X Factor stars are currently in the middle of their first ever headline tour of America and won’t be back in the UK until early July, however, around a month after their return Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan will take to the stage, along with legends such as Take That, The Who and George Michael to perform at the closing ceremony for the 2012 games.

An insider broke the news to The Daily Star and explained:

“The main theme of the Olympic closing ceremony will be celebrating the best of British music, so it’s only right that One Direction are opening the show. They are the UK’s biggest music export at the moment behind Adele, who is also rumoured to be involved in some way.

An official announcement about the lineup has not yet been made and until it is, it is thought that the boys have been sworn to secrecy, however the lads are said to be incredibly excited about the prospect of performing at such a huge event. The source added:

“It’s all top secret and the boys aren’t allowed to talk about it but they are thrilled. It isn’t every day you get the instant exposure of performing in front of a billion people.

“One Direction are unstoppable at the moment. They have achieved many career highlights at such an early age but this is right up there. To perform in their home country’s Olympic ceremony is like winning their very own gold medal.”

The closing ceremony will take place on 12th August in the Olympic stadium. It includes a Handover from London to Rio de Janeiro, for the 2016 Olympic Games. The Closing Ceremony also features the extinguishing of the Olympic Flame, signalling the end of the Games. The theme will be ‘A Symphony of British Music’, to celebrate the fact that music has been one of Britain’s strongest cultural exports over the last 50 years. In just two short years, 1D have come so far that they are considered one of the best and current British musical export. Not bad for a reality TVband!

Meanwhile, the lads have admitted that they would love to have their very own doggy mascot, who they could take on tour.

After Liam Payne bought his family a gorgeous Labrador pup, Niall Horan has admitted that as a band, they thought about getting a mini husky dog, but worried that they wouldn’t have time to look after it properly.

The Irish singer told The Sun:

“We’ve looked into it and it’s going to be hard since we’ve got so much travel next year. We wanted a mini-husky. There’s only a few of them in the world. We wanted one.”

He added:

“But I think it’s going to be too much hard work, with quarantine and all that. We were going to try and kick in between the five of us.”
