One Direction strip for a swim in the Sydney Harbour

POLICE foot patrols will be ramped up and traffic brought to a standstill as One Direction-mania hits Melbourne.

Hundreds of hysterical teens flocked to Sydney Airport to greet the Brit boy band as it flew into the country yesterday, only to be left in tears as its members sneaked out through a loading dock.

The Fab Five later posed for screaming fans at their hotel, then stripped off to enjoy a swim in the harbour.

Last night Victoria Police revealed the dramatic scenes had prompted extra taxpayer-funded officers to be rostered on foot patrols.

One Direction are expected to fly into Melbourne on Saturday, before a private pre-Logies gig on Sunday and a sold-out concert at Hisense Arena on Monday night.

Police special operations officer Supt Peter O'Neil said yesterday: "We will be stepping up patrols in and around Crown casino ... we have seen the scenes they have caused."
