Young Chileans go wild for Nick Jonas concert in Santiago

The Nick Jonas and the Administration concert on October 4 at Movistar Arena was filled with screaming tweens, teens and their patient and loving parents. The signs that filled the stadium were scrawled with Spanish to English Google-translated love notes that showed their undying devotion for their favorite Jonas brother.

The former Disney channel star, infamous for purity rings and dating Miley Cyrus, adapted many of his musical stylings with his solo venture Nick Jonas and the Administration by blending funk music with run-of-the-mill pop riffs. At times he sounded like a grown-up, Disney produced version of “Kidz Bop”. His lyrics were filled with the age-old story of love, heartbreak and confusion that resonates throughout youth and across language and cultural barriers.

The tween-filled crowd nearly drowned him out as they sang every word to their favorite songs from his solo album Nick Jonas and the Administration. He reworked a couple of his songs and made one of them a Latin version which turned the crowd frantic with joy. He also played a couple of his hits from his wildly popular days playing music with the Jonas Brothers, as well as a surprisingly good acoustic cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow” and an unexpected song from his London acting stint in Les Miserables. His voice was most notable during these covers, because he was able to step out of the teeny-bopper love song world and into something a little more adult and different for the young star.

His movements were reminiscent of nearly every male pop star that has ever graced a stage surrounded by rabid teens: A little dance here, a little wave there and a cooler-than-cool grin to make them go absolutely nuts.

His relaxed and professional manner on stage seemed to drive the crowd even crazier, as every single twitch of his body sent a shock wave through the cheering fans. Even his English conversations with the crowd were met with deafening cheers, despite the stadium being full of native Spanish speakers. When he managed to pull out whatever Spanish he picked up in grade school, the crowd doubled over itself in pure, guttural screams.

All in all, it’s difficult to criticize any teen idol who makes a crowd full of tweens and teens feel that happy. We’ve all been through the teen idol stage to some degree, and the happiness throughout the stadium was almost envious. Although his music is nothing new, noteworthy or innovative, the look on the faces in the crowd was nothing short of ecstasy. If anything is certain from his concert, it’s that young Chile loves Nick Jonas. With such dedicated fans, this young performer has quite a long career ahead of him.
