It was just last September that the trio of the Jonas Brothers played a gig to a Phoenix audience at Cricket Wireless Pavilion. To go from Cricket Wireless Pavilion (now Ashley Furniture HomeStore Pavilion) to the Venue Scottsdale seems like a pretty big downgrade. But Saturday's performance at the Venue of Scottsdale only featured one Jonas, Joe, who is currently on tour in support of his debut solo album, "Fastlife."
For his solo debut, Jonas is taking more of an R&B approach to his music rather than the teen-pop for which the Jonas Brothers are largely known. This direction is not all entirely unexpected, especially considering the fact that Joe was always considered the heartthrob of the three brothers.
That heartthrob persona was one that the singer definitely played into Saturday. Not surprisingly, most of the people who showed up for the performance were young girls, many of them sporting Jonas Brothers T-shirts.
While Jonas was taking the stage, that audience of teenage girls did what they usually do at concerts. They screamed their high-pitched screams, which almost completely overpowered the music that was playing. But once Jonas started in with the song "Love Slayer," the screams subsided, quickly starting back up when the song ended and pretty much any time he addressed the audience.
Most of the songs performed came from Jonas' new album. Songs like "Kleptomaniac" and the album's title track, "Fastlife," were fast-paced pop songs that had many in the audience dancing along. But the singer also put on display part of that R&B side of the album with the song "Sorry," which Jonas described as an apology song for breaking someone's heart.
Jonas also threw in a few fan favorite songs from the Jonas Brothers. Songs like "When You Look Me In The Eyes," "Hello Beautiful," and "Burning Up" received some of the biggest reactions of the night. Ironically, during parts of his performance, Jonas was joined on stage by two backup dancers, giving the appearance of there being a trio on stage. Whether it was an intentional move to give the impression of all three Jonas' on stage is tough to say.
Closing out his show, he performed a cover of Chris Brown's "Beautiful People," during which he handed out roses to a few of the girls in the audience. As one would expect, this drove the crowd of teenage girls crazy, which was probably the intention. He followed that song up with "See No More" a song that was co-written by Brown.
Opening up the show for Jonas was pop singer JoJo, who performed a 30-minute set. In addition performing some of her big hits like "Leave (Get Out)" off her 2004 self-titled debut, she included a cover of Drake's "Marvin's Room (Can't Do Better)" and "Disaster," the first single off of her new album "Jumping Trains."
