'Wicked' Movie Writer Reacts to Elphaba & Glinda Sexuality Speculation, Denies Fan Theory

'Wicked' Movie Writer Reacts to Elphaba & Glinda Sexuality Speculation, Denies Fan Theory

There has been a lot of rumor and speculation (and as they say in Oz, innuendo and outuendo 😉), about the sexuality of Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked… and now the writer of the movie is responding.

Fans of the Wicked universe have speculated that Glinda and Elphaba are both queer and in a romantic relationship with each other. Actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both responded to the theories.

Gregory Maguire, who wrote the “Wicked” novel, has even confirmed that he intentionally put some “sapphic tension” between the characters.

Now, Broadway and movie writer Winnie Holzman is speaking out in response to theories about how the characters were written in the film.

Keep reading to find out more…

“For me, that is not it,” Winnie told THR about the speculation. “But that is not to say that I don’t feel gratitude if the queer community is feeling queerness in the movie. There’s very real reasons why that would be, and I think that’s beautiful.”

“In a funny way, it’s really not my business. I want people to have their own response,” Winnie added. “Both of them have a destiny and they needed each other to reach that destiny, and to me, isn’t that fulfilling enough?”

Ethan Slater's Ex-Wife Lilly Jay Discusses Their Divorce & Coparenting, Alludes to His Relationship With Ariana Grande & 'Wicked'

Ethan Slater's Ex-Wife Lilly Jay Discusses Their Divorce & Coparenting, Alludes to His Relationship With Ariana Grande & 'Wicked'

Ethan Slater‘s ex-wife Lilly Jay opened up about their divorce and being thrust into the spotlight thanks to his new relationship with Ariana Grande.

The 32-year-old Broadway star and Wicked actor filed to divorce Lilly in July 2023. They had been married for four years and welcomed their first child, a son, in August 2022.

News of their split came as the public was learning that Ethan was linked to Ariana.

In an essay, Lilly discussed the end of their relationship and how it effected her life and career as a psychologist. In the process, she alluded to his high-profile new relationship and the release of Wicked.

Keep reading to find out more…

“I really never thought I would get divorced. Especially not just after giving birth to my first child and especially not in the shadow of my husband’s new relationship with a celebrity,” Lilly wrote in an essay that was published by The Cut.

In the story, she addressed her own personal relationship with social media and sharing herself online, noting that she’d deleted her Facebook as a teenager.

“My partner was on a different path, in which social media and exposure were not impediments but rather necessities,” she said. “It was a tenuous balance — my profession, which requires privacy, and his, which is measured in applause — but it worked well while life was unfolding according to our plans.”

Lilly noted that she was initially unaware of a growing distance herself and Ethan. Instead, she said that she moved with him and their young son so that he could continue his career.

Faced with their divorce, Lilly wrote that she had to see the end of a relationship with her high school sweetheart. In the process, they had to figure out how to coparent.

“While our partnership has changed, our parenthood has not. Both of us fiercely love our son 100 percent of the time, regardless of how our parenting time is divided. As for me, days with my son are sunny,” she wrote.

She added that Wicked is now “associated with the saddest days of my life.”

The increased interest in her personal life possibly hurt Lilly‘s career. She described a “job offer that dissolved without explanation after yet another tabloid news cycle” and said that some first-time patients cancelled their appointments.

Lilly offered an apology to her patients. She also shared some meaningful lessons that she’s learned from the experience.

“My entire adult life, I feared that loss of control and postpartum depression would destroy me. One day in London, I looked up and found that they had both arrived. And I am okay. If I can’t be invisible anymore, I may as well introduce myself,” she wrote.

Her other lesson: “Some of what you loved most about your partner was actually your own goodness reflected back to you; it’s yours to keep and carry forward.”

The couple finalized their divorce in September 2024.

Cynthia Erivo Reveals How Long It Took To Get Into Her 'Wicked' Makeup & Being Called a 'Wore Hire'

Cynthia Erivo Reveals How Long It Took To Get Into Her 'Wicked' Makeup & Being Called a 'Wore Hire'

Cynthia Erivo revealed just how long it took to transform into Elphaba while filming Wicked.

The 37-year-old actress brings the iconic green character to life in the big-screen adaptation of the beloved musical. During an interview with Elle UK, she confirmed that the team used makeup to get her green skin instead of using effects.

How long did it take Cynthia to get ready for a day on set?

She answered that question and responded to people saying that she was a “woke hire” for the movie. The actress even shared some insight into her bond with costar Ariana Grande.

Keep reading to find out more…

On how long it took to put on her green makeup to play Elphaba: “At the beginning, there was a question about whether we would use CGI, but I wanted it to be practical make-up. The make-up took about two hours and 45 minutes if it was head, neck and hands. If it was the whole body, that would be about four hours.”

On people calling her a “woke hire” for the movie: “There have definitely been conversations about me getting this role as a ‘woke hire.’ I had to audition, just like everybody else. And I’m glad I had to do that. I have the credentials for it. I’ve done the work. But I’m glad they got to be sure about the choice. It allows me to take this, and to know that I had to work really hard for it.”

On her relationship with Ariana Grande: “We cultivated a friendship, outside of all of this, that allows us to have these real, deep connective conversations that join us as friends and sisters. We sit on FaceTime for hours.”

On feeling a connection to Elphaba: “I was conscious that I didn’t want to erase the thing that I am underneath the green. For me, it was about using my own experience as the ‘other,’ as someone who exists in that way. So, that’s partially the reason why Elphaba has braids, as opposed to straight hair. It’s the reason why she has long nails.”

“I think, because Elphaba’s otherness is about the colour of her skin, I immediately feel connected to it as a Black woman. The beauty is that it connects with anyone who feels like they’re the other – whether they are Black, whether they are queer, or whether they are just… different.”

We got some very exciting news about Wicked: Part Two this week.

Amanda Seyfried Comments on Viral 'Popular' Video, Clarifies Misconception About the 'Wicked'-Related Clip

The 39-year-old actress shared that the clip is NOT from her audition as Glinda.

Keep reading to find out more…

Amanda told Variety, “I think it was during COVID. I was doing a Lancôme shoot in Long Island City. Elizabeth Stewart [was] my stylist. I was not auditioning for ‘Wicked’ yet, but I knew it was like coming up. So I was just f-king around really, and I was like, ‘This dress is so Glinda. And Elizabeth was like, ‘Do it.’ And then she posted at some point.”

She mused that “maybe it would be better if it hadn’t been posted…it was truly just a fun, like, [behind-the-scenes] moment of my Lancôme shoot.”

About her actual Glinda audition, she shared, “I went hard for that, for sure. And it was a very long process. And everything happens the way it’s meant to.” Ariana Grande ended up playing the role.

Kristin Chenoweth Calls Out One Million Moms for 'Wicked' Hate Campaign

Kristin Chenoweth Calls Out One Million Moms for 'Wicked' Hate Campaign

Kristin Chenoweth is calling out a hateful agenda.

The hate group One Million Moms started a petition against the Wicked movie for “pushing the LGBTQ agenda on families, particularly children,” and the 56-year-old actress is reacting.

“Everyone knows the ‘one million Moms’ are a mere few hundred. Maybe,” she wrote on Instagram.

“It’s called entertainment. Artistry. I am a Christian woman [and] originated the role of Glinda and all the silliness that these women spew out of hate. No no no. I can’t help it: I try to love em anyways. For they don’t get it. For anyone who wants to see girl power, then go so WICKED. Onstage or in a movie theater.”

She also recently responded to fan speculation about whether the love between Glinda and Elphaba is romantic.

“Whether it’s romantic or platonic, Glinda might be a little in the closet,” Ariana Grande speculated to Gay Times.

“You never know. Give it a little time. I mean, it is just a true love, and I think that transcends sexuality. It’s just kind of a deep safety within each other. And that’s why they probably ship it,” she added.

“I thought so too way back when….” Kristin commented on an Instagram post featuring the quote.

“I think Elphie is… She goes wherever the wind goes,” Cynthia Erivo explained to Gay Times. “I think she loves Glinda, I think she loves love. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the deep connection the both of them have. They do have a real relationship. It is true love.”
