John Mayer Talks "Paper Doll"; Is It About Taylor Swift?

John Mayer can't seem to dodge those questions about his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift!

When he recently visited The Today Show, he talked about his new single "Paper Doll" and was even asked if it was about Taylor.

"There's been some speculation from the press that it might be about someone," co-host Willie Geist asked John, without directly mentioning Tay's name.

"True or false?"

"Yeah, songwriters write songs because of people, about people," John said.

"Anything someone else wrote is their reception of a song. I don't get involved with [it]. It's none of my business."

Hmm, not really a clear answer there John! Sounds like he was trying to avoid the whole thing. But, we still totally think it's about her!

Many speculated that John's new single was a response to her song "Dear John" a few years ago that was obviously about him and that he openly admitted embarrassed him.

Taylor Swift Hasn’t Let John Mayer’s “Paper Doll” Interrupt Her Evening Routine, Quality Time with Cat

We at VF.com adore Taylor Swift, which is why we are especially relieved to see that the poised singer-songwriter does not appear to have been affected by John Mayer’s new song “Paper Doll.” (Released this week, the track has been interpreted by some to be a rebuttal to her 2010 lyrical open letter “Dear John.”)

Suggesting as much, Swift has posted her very first Vine—a video-clip collage that lasts six seconds or less—proving that her regularly scheduled routine has not been disrupted by any events, John Mayer–related or not, this week.

The Vine was posted Wednesday night with the caption: “At 9pm, I’m either onstage or doing this.” The clip (embedded below) cuts between a snippet of Kate Winslet’s character Rose in Titanic; Taylor Swift, in peach gingham, transfixed by the James Cameron classic; and her adorable gray-and-white cat Meredith beside her.

We will raise a mug of kombucha to that!

Remember, Taylor's song "Dear John" was about Mayer, so it's not entirely unexpected that he would write about her.

For instance, John mentioning the number "22," like Taylor's hit song...is it a coincidence?

When he sings "Someone's gonna paint you another sky," is it in response to the "Dear John" lyrics: "You paint me a blue sky / And go back and turn it to rain?"

After all, last year, John told Rolling Stone magazine that Taylor's song "really humiliated" him and "made me feel terrible." He also called it "cheap songwriting."

Oh, songwriters.
