Ariana Grande Surprised 'Don't Look Up' Director By Improvising Some of Her Best Lines

The writer and director of Don’t Look Up is opening up about working with Ariana Grande and how she surprised him with her improvisation skills.

Adam McKay talked about blending improv and structure in the movie for a behind-the-scenes clip on Netflix Film Club’s YouTube channel.

Ariana Grande most certainly did improvise. Her best improv was when she sang the song for the first time,” Adam said.

“She’s the one who added all that stuff about, ‘We’re all gonna die. Turn off that shit Box News,’” he added. “That was her riffing on the first scratch track of the melody line, and the second I heard it, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s going in the movie.’ And that might be one of my favorite moments in the movie, where you have pretty much the biggest pop star in the world singing beautifully, ‘We’re all gonna die.’ Every time I see it, it’s just this hilarious cognitive dissonance with it. So, Ariana Grande can definitely improvise.”

Adam also talked about casting Ariana in the project.

“It made sense to have the biggest pop star in the world play the biggest pop star in the world,” he said. “We got her on set for her first scene with Leo and Jen, and she’s improvising lines. I knew she’d nail the song, but I didn’t know she could improvise.”
