Demi Lovato Reveals Her Experience With Bullying

During a recent sit-down interview with NY1 Parenting Correspondent Shelley Goldberg, pop star/actress Demi Lovato spoke about her personal and often painful experiences with bullying in school and her commitment to helping kids cope with this trauma.

Lovato says when she was 12 years old, she went from being in the popular clique to being an outcast over one afternoon.

"I got threats on my phone," revealed Lovato. "There was a hate petition that said, 'If you hate Demi Lovato, sign this piece of paper.' In the bathroom stall, there was Demi's hate wall and people would just write horrible things on the wall."

Lovato was told she was "fat" and "ugly," and, as a result, struggled with self-image issues.

"It's a battle I deal with every day," Lovato said.

She says that that while now she can brush off those comments, it's hard for a younger person to do so.

"It was hard when I was younger, more vulnerable, when I didn't have as thick of skin as I do today," she said.

As a result of her personal struggles, Lovato has become an outspoken advocate in the fight against bullying.
