Demi Lovato hits the stage for a performance during the first day of the 2016 Democratic National Convention on Monday night (July 25) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Penn.

The 23-year-old singer gave a speech about living with mental illness before performing her song “Confident.”

“Like millions of Americans, I am living with mental illness. But I am lucky. I had the resources and support to get treatment at a top facility,” Demi said. “Unfortunately, too many Americans from all walks of life don’t get help, whether they fear the stigma or cannot afford treatment.”

Demi told the crowd that she is proof that people can live happy lives with mental illness and urged politicians to give more people access to treatment.

“This is not about politics, its simply the right thing to do,” she said.
