Demi spoke on MSNBC Live With Tamron Hall yesterday about mental illness and the recent mass shooting at a community college in Oregon. While mental health is being talked about more, sadly the association with tragic events like this isn't what the conversation should be entirely about.
Demi explained, "Well, unfortunately, we've had several instances where mental health has been brought to the attention by the media because of these tragedies."
She added: "I think it's really important to remember that actually mental health - people with mental illness are actually more likely to inflict harm on themselves and become the victim rather than be the perpetrators."
Demi discussed her own mental health issues and involvement in the Be Vocal: Speak Up For Mental Health initiative, fighting for mental health reform.
Demi recently told People.com that her own personal journey has inspired her to help others: "I went through several years of pain and suffering, and I want to be able to help people and help try to prevent that suffering from happening."
She explained, "I think it's extremely important that we continue to raise the awareness and hopefully convince Congress to take more action."
Bottom line: Demi rocks on so many levels, we can't even deal...but we're so in awe of everything she is and does.
