During a recent interview on the Dan & Maz Show in Australia after the 1D news broke, Ed said he heard that Zayn was quitting through his tour manager, but not from the guys directly, adding, "Well he's left a bunch of times so it's not really...," adding that "there's been in the press he's kind of gone back and forth."
When the interviewers set him straight that this time it's a done deal, Ed commented, "Fair play to him, let him be happy. If he's not happy then like..."
The interviewers also brought up that Zayn's reason behind leaving was to live a "normal" life, noting it would be a challenge to "be normal after being in One Direction." Ed agreed, saying, "Yeah, but also being a normal 22-year-old is pretty boring...all I'm saying is being a normal 22-year-old is probably not as fun as being in One Direction. Just saying."
Still, Ed believes Zayn didn't make a bad decision, explaining, "he hasn't, but if he's left just to be normal, it's not gonna be as fun."
