“The future of rock ‘n’ roll, it’s Justin Bieber” declares Iggy Pop, staring blankly at us through a bruised and battered face.
No, the godfather of punk has not gone mad, but rather has leant his distinctive mug to a Belgium Amnesty International advertising campaign that aims to draw public attention to the plight of torture victims across Europe. The striking image of Pop pledging his new found lust for Biebs finishes with the campaigns slogan: “Torture a man and he will tell you anything”.
While the ad seems like an extreme way to draw attention to the issue, Amnesty International Belgium director Philippe Hensmans explains, “For us it was a quirky but not sloppy way to attract public attention to this tragic reality, which often happens in the greatest secrecy.” Other celebrities featured in the campaign include the Dalai Lama making the absurd statement, “A man who does not have a Rolex watch at 50 years old has failed in his life”. And fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld admitting,”The summit of elegance, this is the Hawaiian shirt and flip-flops.” See the posters below.
As Spin out Amnesty International jave a history of harnessing star power for greater good, having organised a gig Pussy Riot, Flaming Lips, Ms. Lauryn Hill and more earlier this year.
