Jake Bugg has tried to defend his recent comments about One Direction but somehow just managed to make things a whole lot worse!
The singer songwriter blasted the X Factor stars after this year’s Brit Awards and took real offence at them being compared to The Beatles, as he doesn’t think they are credible enough to be linked with such legendary songwriters and creators.
In a new interview with The Daily Record, Jake tried to explain and justify his comments and insisted that he didn’t mean to get at Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles on a personal level and he explained:
“People love the controversy of social media but what I said was nothing personal against One Direction.
“I could have gone for any of those bands like Union J or whatever their names are. I write songs and they don’t.
“I don’t hold anything against them as individuals or as people because I’ve never met them.”
That’s ok then right? Wrong! Jake then continued with a bit of a rant that is sure to upset Directioners everywhere and he insisted that the band – who notched up two of the top five global selling records of 2012 – only sell so many records and make so much money because they look good. He accused the ‘Little Things’ hitmakers of singing ‘meaningless tunes’ and continued:
“I’m sure they’re probably nice guys. I’m just not necessarily a fan of what they do. I have an opinion and, if you don’t like it, don’t listen to what I say.
“I write my songs and I go do my gigs.
“They can sing as many meaningless tunes as they want and probably make quite a bit of money from it. But that’s not the way I go about things.”
Bugg thinks 1D will eventually come to the end of their musical career and will be easily replaced and forgotten. He implied that bands like 1D, Union J and presumable The Wanted and JLS are a dime a dozen and added:
“Their popularity is just because young teenage girls are becoming women.
“When good looking lads sing, it attracts female attention, it seems.”
“There are always going to be boy bands around.
“In a few years there’ll be a new one and then another one after that.”
Louis Tomlinson took offence the first time Bugg slated them and admitted that he used to like his music before the slur. We can’t imagine him rushing out to buy Jake’s new album any time soon, can you?
