'It’s so hard. No one expected anything like this'

ONE DIRECTION’S Zayn broke down on camera after seeing babies fight for their lives in Africa.
Zayn and his bandmates were visibly moved after seeing the stricken tots struggling for life.

After seeing one baby, Zayn had to step out the ward to be alone before breaking down in tears and pleading for help in the emotional Comic Relief appeal.

A tearful Zayn said: “It’s so hard. No one expected anything like this.

"The babies aren’t even a year old.”

He was joined by Harry, Liam, Niall and Louis on a two-day trip to Ghanaian capital Accra for Red Nose Day.

During their time there, the boys witnessed babies fighting for their lives against common killers such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, which could easily be prevented by vaccines.

Their visit to the over-stretched Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital was shown as part of the film of their African adventure on Let’s Dance for Comic Relief on Saturday night.

Each year, about 1.7million children die from vaccine-preventable diseases around the world. This equates to one child every 20 seconds.

Ashen-faced Liam was seen shaking his head, saying: “It must be so difficult seeing your baby so ill.

“At home we take vaccinations for granted. But not all children here have access to them and that can mean the difference between life and death.

“I’ve watched Red Nose Day appeals before and been in tears. But seeing these babies so sick is another level of sadness.

“You just don’t realise how hard life can be in other parts of the world.”

In 2012, newborn babies started being vaccinated against rotavirus — a stomach bug that can cause diarrhoea, one of the country’s biggest childhood killers.

Comic Relief is also helping to fund GAVI — an alliance that is committed to providing vaccinations to children in poor countries.
