Demi Lovato defends Lindsay Lohan on Twitter: 'Spread love not war'

Demi Lovato has stuck up for Lindsay Lohan in a series of posts on her Twitter page.

The X Factor USA judge began to interrogate gossip blogger Perez Hilton about his treatment of Lohan, following her recent arrest on suspicion of assault.

When Hilton tweeted the headline: "'Lindsay Is On Cocaine & Out Of Control', Says Michael Lohan!" Lovato took him to task.

"hey how aboout you just leave her alone?" she wrote. "Instead of kicking someone while they're down?"

Hilton responded: "The media (me) is not harming Lindsay. She is doing that to herself. She needs to take #accountability before she will get better.

"She has been given chance after chance after chance to redeem herself and make good. Yet she's like a broken record... And she doesn't get any 'free pass' because her parents are both incredibly dysfunctional. She's an adult, not a child or teen."

Hilton added: "I do wish Lindsay well and hope she is able to sort out her issues for good before she ends up like her idol, Marilyn Monroe."

Lovato - herself the centre of media attention when she sought treatment for an eating disorder in 2010 - then continued the conversation by saying: "The media (not just you) don't realise when you need to stop. This isn't a headline for your readers. This is someone's life."

She also sent out a more general message to her followers, writing: "I really wish we could go back in time when artists were known for their work. Not their personal lives... #spreadLOVEnotWAR."

Hilton continued to defend his reporting of the situation, writing: "Do you really think @LindsayLohan wants the media to not write about her? She needs attention and creates drama to get it. #Truth... I have compassion for Lindsay, but I don't feel sorry for her. There is a difference. Glad U are doing well! Xoxo."

Lovato asked: "Regardless, why does it need to become everyone's business? If you believe someone needs help - help them", prompting Hilton to reply: "I have tried to help @lindsaylohan. More than once. But the details of that will remain private. Others have tried too. Often."

However, both Hilton and Lovato remained cordial throughout the exchange, with Hilton joking that he likes it when Lovato is "sassy" and the X Factor USA judge saying: "I know you're doing your job. But I like reading your site for the funny, uplifting random videos of babies or animals better."

Lohan was released from custody after several hours but has been given a ticket for a court date, amidst apparently untrue rumours that the altercation was over The Wanted singer Max George.
