He's the bad boy of the group and was brave enough to refuse to dance during X Factor boot camp.
But under his tattoos and cool persona, Zayn Malik is a real pussy cat who’s scared of his girlfriend’s brother and is protective over Harry Styles.
Zayn was shaking in his converse when he went to meet the parents a few months ago and was preparing to be introduced to Perrie Edwards’ big scar brother.
The One Direction singer admitted: “I went up to meet her mum and family the other month. I was a bit scared of meeting her brother to be honest - he's in the navy, he's a big bloke.
“I thought he was going to be a bit defensive over his sister but he was cool.”
Zayn, 19, has his own younger sisters to look out for and admits he’s finding it difficult to spend time away from them and missing them growing up at such an important part of their life.
In an interview with The Sun, he said: “It's really been hard. Last weekend was the first time in six months that I've been home.
“I do feel like I've missed out a bit because I was really close with my sisters when I was at home. It must be weird for them but they cope really well.”
Internet trolls sent Zayn sickening racist remarks after picture emerged of him with Perri and his family celebrating Eid - a Muslim holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan.
The brutal remarks became too much for Zayn and eventually it forced him to quit the (anti)social-network Twitter.
Talking for the first time about the incident, he said: “I believe that your religion should be between you and whoever your belief is in.
“I don't think you should stick it in peoples faces. I think you should just keep it to yourself and that's how I've always been with it. I just had seen a few things that had annoyed me.
“I thought we had moved away from that and we're living in the 21st century and people could accept people from different religions. It shouldn't have wound me up but it did.”
He added his guilt for the real fans who were gutted that their idol had temporarily deleted his account: “At the same time there are so many fans on there who say nice things every day so why should they miss out?”
Out of all of the boys in 1D, Zayn is the one who most struggles with fame but admits he is more concerned for his friend and bandmate Harry Styles.
“He is the baby of the group but people seem to forget that because of the way that he is and that he is so charming.
“So it is a little bit upsetting sometimes if you see him with the weight of the world on his shoulders. It does annoy us a bit. He’s a young kid and people are just giving him grief for no reason,” he said.
Zayn also revealed he’s bought his first house – a £2.2 million mansion in North London. It won’t be far from Harry’s new place so they can have sleepovers all the time. Or just spend their time farting in each other’s company - either way.
“When I first got with the boys Niall would fart all the time and I wasn’t used to that. Before I knew it I was just farting away with them, just letting myself go,” Zayn LOL’d.
“It’s really cool for me because with having three sisters I was used to being around a lot of girls all the time. So to be around lads is really new. I get to just be a lad.”
Zayn reckons the boys are so close that when they have children in the future that the baby will have four uncles as well as their family. We wonder if they will share nappy duty…
