For a song that was inspired by a chance conversation and written in a matter of minutes, Taylor Swift’s new single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” is making some pretty big waves. It sold over 623,000 digital copies in its first week of release, giving it the biggest sales week for a song by a woman, ever. It also became Taylor’s first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “It was actually inspired really spontaneously in the studio,” she explains. “I was working with Max Martin and Johan Shellback, who are amazing, and we were in the middle of writing a different song and a friend of my ex-boyfriend’s walked into the studio and start-ed chatting me up about how he had heard that we were going to get back together. And I said at the end of it, We are never ever getting back together … like ever … EVER!” That was all it took for Taylor and her co-writers to realize that was a song just dying to be written. Taylor says, “Immediately both of us just kind of looked at the guitar and I picked it up and started strumming and we wrote this song in about 25 minutes.”
