Miley Cyrus wants ‘a long engagement’

Miley Cyrus says she and fiance Liam Hemsworth aren't in a hurry to walk down the aisle.

"I don't really care about the wedding or the piece of paper as much as I do the promise we've made to each other. And we want to have a long engagement," she says in Marie Claire's September issue, out Aug. 14.

And she answers critics who might think that at 19, she might be too young to be engaged and even think about marriage: "Life is too short not to be with the person you want to be with. "

The magazine photo shoot took place one hour after the announcement of her engagement. Cyrus tells Marie Claire that it was a "complete surprise," when Hemsworth, 22, popped the question at their California home. And no, her parents were not aware of Hemsworth's plans.

On the ring: "I had no input. We'd been kind of talking about getting engaged … I saw it online at one point and thought it was really pretty … I just love that it's old and has a story. And I'm happy because it doesn't look like anything else I wear."

On her relationship with Hemsworth: "Liam and I have a really good relationship … neither of us is super-jealous. We know each other and would never do anything to hurt each other."
