Demi Lovato: Fame doesn’t cause a troubled star to become troubled

In 2010, Demi Lovato’s personal troubles went public. She abruptly dropped out of her fall tour with the Jonas Brothers and checked into a treatment facility. The rehab stint had many speculating about the reasons why. After getting treatment, Lovato opened up about her struggles in interviews and on the MTV special Stay Strong. Her personal troubles included an eating disorder, self-mutilation, depression, and drug use.

Demi, 19, who is an X Factor judge this season, attended the Television Critics Association press panel and said that while she struggled in the spotlight, it wasn’t fame that caused her to go down the wrong path. She said that she thinks that is the case with other troubled stars.

"You can’t prevent anyone from going down the wrong road," she said, according to Slate Magazine. "If they’re going to have an eating disorder, they’re going to have an eating disorder. If they’re going to do this, they’re going to do that... I don’t really think fame has a lot to do with it. I think it adds some pressure and sometimes it makes the problem a little bit worse. But for me, I had been struggling with those issues beforehand, and unless you’re in a good place when you start working, I think that it’s kind of inevitable for these things to happen."

Demi Lovato still works hard to “stay strong.” Since getting help, she vowed to be a positive influence and help others overcome their own personal troubles.

“I don’t think it does anybody any good to just hide something or cover it up or lie,” she had said. “The reason why I did it is because that’s what being a role model is about. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about speaking about your issues and inspiring others to get help.”
