Having first hit our screens as one of Barney The Dinosaur's the all-singing all-dancing accomplices, there was some surprise when Selena Gomez was first seen on the set of her newest film, smoking, drinking and getting arrested. But it sounds like her role in Spring Breakers was not just a change but a challenge, and the experience even ended up causing Selena to have a break down on set.
Now that she's a bit older, it sounds like Selena wants to try some more challenging roles and to get the ball rolling signed up to play Faith in Director Harmony Korine's upcoming Thelma and Louise style movie, Spring Breakers. Talking to Elle US about the movie, Selena explained why she was so excited to get the opportunity.
"My TV show, my music, all of that - I can say it's for my fans. But this is definitely just for me. I want to push myself."
It wasn't all sunshine, roses and prancing around in a bikini though, and there were reports at the time that Selena suffered an attack of anxiety during the filming of some of her pivotal scenes.
"I broke down," Sel explained. "They weren't giving me any space. I said I would give them their shot if they would just go away. But they wouldn't.
"I was trying to do something I really cared about, and they just weren't giving me the chance to do it. Then Harmony said, 'That's it. Say everything you just said, but have Faith say it.' "
Apparently the advice worked and in the end, Selena found that she had more in common with her character than she'd thought.
"I think Faith has all those church people juding her, and she's finally doing something that allows her to be free and become the person she wants to be. I'm not sure I can always relate to her in certain aspects, but to that part I did.
Oh, so not the whole stealing cars and spending her life in a bikini bit then?
