News broke this morning that Miley Cyrus, 19, is engaged to her boyfriend of three years, 22-year-old Australian actor Liam Hemsworth. The actress/singer and her Hunger Games-star fiance are overjoyed; we’re a little leery. Like everyone else, we wonder: Is 19 too young to make a lifelong commitment?
Miley and Liam seem to have had a healthy three-year relationship thus far, save a short breakup in 2010. As someone who’s been in the public eye since childhood, Miley is probably more mature than most 19 year olds: she’s weathered several scandals, including public outcry over a video of her smoking out of a bong in 2010 and her underage topless Annie Leibovitz portrait in Vanity Fair in 2008. She also witnessed her parents’ messy almost-divorce in 2010.
Still, this girl isn’t quite out of her teens yet; if Miley and Liam get married before her 21st birthday in November 2013, Miley won’t even be able to legally enjoy a drink at her own wedding (and weddings without alcohol…yeesh). We don’t know when the pair plan to get hitched, but statistics say maybe Miley should wait a few years: The divorce rate for people who get married in their teens is 40%, but that goes down to 29% once they hit their twenties.
Liam proposed on May 31st with a 3.5 carat diamond ring from jeweler Neil Lane. Miley told People, ““I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam.” She definitely seems head over heels, but teenage love is usually intense—we just hope it lasts.
